Posted on 05/08/2009 12:46:49 PM PDT by givemELL
Nineteen new qualified armed posse volunteers will graduate today, Wednesday, May 6th, 2009 at 6:30PM from the Sheriffs Training Academy, 2627 South 35 Avenue. Arpaio says he plans to step up his recruiting methods to attract more men and women to join his volunteer armed posse through more public outreach.
The public has a desire to help local law enforcement when times are tough. I am banking on their generosity of time and energy to help my deputies keep our communities safe, Arpaio says.
Arpaio is seeking primarily those who wish to be trained and qualified to carry and use a weapon. Currently there are about 300 qualified armed posse members in a volunteer force now numbering nearly 2,600 men and women, the largest volunteer posse in the nation.

Nationally, sheriffs' must be observing...hmmm.
That is so cool.
Sheriff Joe for president 2012
Will he make them wear pink underwear when they are caught??
Dear Sheriff Joe,
If there is ever an opening in the DFW area for a Sheriff I hope that you will consider a relocation to the Great State of Texas.
A true expression of leadership lies with the actions you do, not the words you read off a teleprompter.
I just love this. And this is the way we counter this administration; just take charge at the lower levels, stay independent from them as best you can, and be quite ready to blast back at them should they raise a protest. Long live Sheriff Joe, an American hero.
Is this the way to fight for our country when the president cuts the Federal funding for catching illegals?
Naaaah, he does what he does where he is.
I hate to break it to everyone, but the Democrats have painted a big bull’s eye on Sheriff Joe. He has been able to weather the assaults for years, but now the Feds are going after him.
If they can find a single paper clip missing, he’s toast.
The guy is terrific even though he is a right wing extremist.
I’m sure you’ve heard that putting a scope on a friendly
puts a 2” BE on the miscreant.
We need more Joe’s
The guy is just trying to uphold the Constitution for
crying out loud!!!
This sheriff is NOT an extremist for simply enforcing the law! Now go back to DU!
I so respect the guy. He doesn’t let the political correctness phase him one bit.
I hate to break it to everyone, but the Democrats have painted a big bulls eye on Sheriff Joe. He has been able to weather the assaults for years, but now the Feds are going after him.
I think Joe will do just fine.
He seems to thrive on publicity, he’s certainly been on nationwide TV enough for a local sheriff- and the people of his urban jurisdiction keep voting him in.
The Obama administration has other fish to fry, I don’t think they have much of an appetite for someone who is quite popular and at 77, probably has at most 10 years left.
Lesson to be learned???
Is this not what he’s hired to do???
Is this not what the folks in his county hired him for?
He’s doing his job without requesting a trillion bazillion like most congressional fools do while nodding their heads like back window doodaa dolls.
I’d work for this guy in a heart beat.
And you can take that to the bank.
Bull Crap!! He enforces the law... I guess you have a problem with that.
I hope he has picked and trained a successor by now. If so, the good sheriff should let him get some face time (if he hasn’t I’m not local.) I would hate for his office to descend to a bickering political fight should he take ill.
Today I thought of something that may wake up “Local” Government, I am going to propose it to my fellow VFW and American Legion brothers and sisters.
It may not be the proper way to do this but it is an idea and a way to get folks involved in something more than writing, calling etc...
I want to have some “Judge” time at the local City Hall, I want to gather fellow Veterans in front of a Judge and we will all re-swear our Oath of Allegiance to the USA just like we did when we were promoted or re-enlisted and make a Statement to LEO, City Government, County Government, State Government and DHS... the same oath that the buffoons in power right now had to take, I would invite local News and hopefully get some media involvement.
In my mind I think the most Charismatic or best speaker or ? member of our group should ask any others that are in attendance if they would take the same oath and if they would not “why not?”
Right now it is an Idea and I haven’t gathered any feedback
And here I was thinking posses had become passe. Way to go, Sherf Joe!
I’m pretty sure Man50D was being sarcastic. By DHS’s standards every FReeper is a “right wing extremist”. Well, except for a lot of Romney’s Mittwits.
BTW< I’d like to see Arpaio as Attorney General in the Palin administration.
You better use the /s tag. Some just don’t get it.
Here is a guy who believes in doing what our elected representatives are supposed to do—protect the lives and property of the American people. He gets it done while thug politicians are more interested in power and wealth.
God Bless Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
If they can find a single paper clip missing, hes toast.”
The Sheriff is responsible to the LOCAL COUNTY residents-—NOT to the Federal Government.
If there is a problem about paper clips- give me an address to send a couple of thousand to Sheriff Joe. It would be my pleasure.
Everyone has a list of things they would like to do or people they would like to spend time with before they die—a personal “bucket list” for each of us.
Sheriff Joe is on my list.....
someone who is quite popular and at 77”
Sheriff Joe is 77 years old? Are you sure??
That would mean he was voted in the first time at an advanced age. I know he gets about 89% of the vote each time he runs.
I’m a big Sheriff Joe fan. I’ve just noticed that the criticism used to come from the flaky nutter Left and the Monica Media. Now it seems that congress and the Hussein administration have their eyes on Joe. Joe is tough and is a rare Republican in that he stands up for himself, but we all know that once the Democrats can chink his armor, his fellow Republicans will abandon him, and some will even attack him.
He is going to be under severe attacks now, and he doesn’t even have to do anything illegal or unethical to be destroyed.
I remember what happened to Governor Mecham. (disclaimer: I did not vote for him). He was impeached for trumped on charges and nearly went to prison.
This is what happens to people who the Left seriously wants to get rid of.
Which county exactly do you think would ever elect Arpaio? Certainly not Dallas County, not Tarant County, and I doubt Collin County would either.
Not Dallas County? How about Dallam County?
I love Sherriff Joe but I am even afraid to vote against him which I have never, ever done of course. Who ever goes after him may find themselves in a world of hurt.
I felt a tingle run up my leg ...
This turned out to be a very funny thread.
He did end up impeached but I also remember they were trying to recall him and the strange thing was I never saw a petition for his recall and didn't know a single person who saw it much less signed it. I do remember discussions about that at work at the time. When that happened I was working for a very wealthy, politically connected man in Phoenix and his version was that Mecham made promises to the powers that be to get elected- I think they were called the Phoenix 100, anyway according to my boss when Mecham took office he told these powerful people to take a hike, he owed them nothing and they did him in.
FWIW I'm impressed with Sheriff Joe. What he has going there sounds a lot like the original form of the civilian militia. Men and women trained and ready to assist the local authorities with community security.
I followed his trial and even watched it in court a couple days. His attorney was Mrs. Chandler's cousin, Mike Scott.
Evan Mecham was a prim tea teetotaler, but Mike was a hard drinking cowboy. He was even a rodeo bull rider at one time. You were less likely to see Mike at a country club than in a Whiskey Row bar in Prescott.
But he was a hell of a lawyer-the best.
Here's an article about Mike's funeral.
I understand sarcasm quite well... and now that I look back at your post I can see that perhaps that's the way you intended it.
Re: "You people"... taking speaking lessons from Ross Perot? /sarc
He said the metroplex. The counties I listed are all in the metroplex. Dallam is way up in the panhandle.
I think if everyone actually knew the amount of taxpayer dollars that go to medical services provided to illegals at Parkland, JPS and other area hospitals it would at least be feasible. But then again the new majority in Tarrant and Dallas I’m sure would never allow the vote to happen.
