Obama Reverses Stance On Immigration

Obama reverses stance on immigration

Co-opts policy he once mocked

By Stephen Dinan May 8, 2009

On the thorniest of political issues, President Obama has embraced the enforcement-first position on immigration that he criticized during last year's presidential campaign, and he now says he can't move forward with the type of comprehensive bill he wants until voters are convinced that the borders can be enforced.

Having already backed off his pledge to have an immigration bill this year, Mr. Obama boosted his commitment to enforcement in the budget released Thursday.

The spending blueprint calls for extra money to build an employee-verification system and to pay for more personnel and equipment to patrol the border.

This security-first stance is not unlike that of President George W. Bush, Bush Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff and Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain, who said their immigration bill failed in 2007 because voters didn't trust the government to be serious about enforcement.

"If the American people don't feel like you can secure the borders," Mr. Obama said at his press conference last week, "then it's hard to strike a deal that would get people out of the shadows and on a pathway to citizenship who are already here, because the attitude of the average American is going to be, 'Well, you're just going to have hundreds of thousands of more coming in each year.' "

Republicans say the shift is a sign that Mr. Obama, who during the campaign repeatedly called the issue a priority, is uncertain how to move forward.

"I don't think Barack Obama understands the immigration issue. I don't know that he has spoken about it in any depth during his entire political career," said Rep. Steve King of Iowa, the top Republican on the House Judiciary subcommittee that handles immigration.

Remember his support is a mile long but only an inch deep. Once his favorablities are below 50% his followers will defect and he will become a lonely community organizer again.

As you said, "If we just let Dems be dems they will self destruct." I fully expect Obama's favorability rating to drop as a result of the unworkable solutions he's foisting on the country.

Obama's policies will bring disaster and pain to every American, and Americans will react as they have before. They will severely punish the party responsible for that pain.

I firmly believe that Obama has set his party up for a trip to the political wilderness that will last for at least a generation. That's how immense the hardship to come will be.

Still - the Democrats are toying with the fundamental underpinnings of our government and our economy in such radical and far-reaching ways, that the resultant damage may be too much for our country to recover from, by simply voting them out.

What Obama and the congressional Democrats are doing goes far beyond politics as usual. They are quite literally overthrowing our constitutional form of republican government, and attempting to transform this nation into a totalitarian, socialist state.

While this historic coup is underway, the "leadership" on our side is busy arguing politics, and much of the rank and file is simply in overwhelm.

Precious few of us understand that the game has rapidly moved from politics as usual, to a whole new level.

Our nation is actually under attack from within. The radicals in charge do not intend to play by the old rules. They're making war on us, while maintaining a facade of the standard business model.

It's something like an illusionist's trick. Make the viewer think you're doing one thing, while in fact, you're doing something entirely different, right in front of their face.

The instincts of the tea party attendees were totally on target. The correct response to the tyranny we see developing is to answer it directly, and in large numbers.

Call it a "Boston Tea Party", a "Storming of the Bastille", or what you will. The fact is that if The People don't directly confront the traitors in government en masse, the takeover will continue.

Brilliant post Windflier and I agree with everything you said!

Just now on Kudlow Larry exposed the new debt as 13% of GDP,a staggering amount, GW was 3%. Soon we will be borrowing every other dollar we spend, just an amazing disaster for anyone that has any knowledge of finance or budgets. These are scary times.

I agree. That's a scary number to confront. A full 10% increased bite out of our entire economy, redistributed to Socialist giveaways and social engineering programs. The damage that will do to our already weakened economy is incalculable.

However, the Trillions in debt that we're looking at won't all be paid by this time next year. That obligation is in the future, as is the damage that obligation will cause to us.

I think what needs to be done, is a wholesale roll-back of Obama's tax and spend bills. It will take a new congress and unyielding pressure from the American people to accomplish, but I think it can be done.

Frankly, Obama is attempting the impossible with his unprecedented expansion of government. His grandiose plans will bankrupt the American people, and that bankruptcy will cause a revolution, which will guarantee the removal of the Democrat party from every position of influence and power in the country.

One way or another, I feel that the Democrats have attempted something far too outlandish and radical to work. They've moved much too fast with their socialist agenda for the economy to sustain, or for the people to willingly accept.

It's going to come crashing down around their heads.
