The little girl flung from a minivan yesterday morning in west Omaha has died, according to the Omaha Police Department.
Josie Bluhm, 4, was in a 2007 Chrysler Town & Country driven by her mother when the crash occurred. Her mother's minivan was southbound on 180th Street about 7:25 a.m. Tuesday when a 2007 Ford F-150 pickup driven west on West Center Road by Eleazar Rangel-Ochoa, 27, ran a red light and slammed into it, authorities said.
Josie was the most severely hurt of those injured in the crash. She suffered brain hemorrhaging and was eventually declared brain dead. Life support was withdrawn, and she died of her injuries at 5:50 p.m. today, police said.
Two other children in the minivan, Cayden Bluhm, 5, and Reagan Bluhm, 1, were, like Josie, taken to the University of Nebraska Medical Center after the crash. Cayden remained in serious condition, and Reagan was treated and released. The condition of their mother, Jayme Bluhm, 32, has been upgraded from serious to fair.
Rangel-Ochoa, whom police arrested after he was treated for his injuries, remained in jail today, accused of driving with a suspended license. He is not in the U.S. legally, according to police; they did not know his country of origin.
Authorities said Rangel-Ochoa's license had been suspended and revoked numerous times for offenses ranging from failure to complete driver improvement classes to driving under the influence. In 2003 his driver's license was revoked for 15 years following a conviction for third-offense DUI. He now will face a charge of misdemeanor motor vehicle homicide, Sgt. Doug Klein said in a police press release.
Amusing however. I do remember BB from the brainless one threads.
I’m not saying that it wasn’t his fault. Plus, the first impression of the article was that the child was NOT in a car seat. And cheap? Plastic? We just had a double-fatal head-on collision a couple of days ago where the children, properly restrained in car seats, survived with only bumps and bruises.

There does seem to be an attempt to shock and offend. Still, it seems there is also a frustration at being unable to effectively communicate.
If the half-seat slipped, it was installed improperly, or an old model. The new ones have handles that the lap belt goes under. The lap belt holds both the seat base and the kid. It would be impossible for a properly installed booster to slip in this manner.
My son's also has an adjustable/removable back that grows with him. The taller he gets, the higher the loop holding the shoulder belt moves. When he's tall enough to sit on just the base and the shoulder harness fits comfortably, the booster seat back gets removed.
Thanks. Poor girl. I still wonder if the vehicle seat itself failed in the impact.
Some cheaper ones were clearly meant to be removable, but when the law changed, they added a anchor strap to make it saleable. A Lot of people simply ignore the anchor instructions so they can keep it removable.
Those booster seats are to raise the child up so the lap belt fits properly. Without the booster, they tend to cross over the abdomen which causes internal injuries in a crash.
It happens. I've had a seat bust down from a rear end collision. I've seen seat belt anchors ripped from the posts and floors in some makes. Those were severe collisions, but that still shouldn't happen.
Back seat anchors are the worst, because corrosion can make them weak and unsafe.
Bite me.
The original thought behind “booster seats” was to bring the child up to a level when the shoulder harness does not cut across the neck and the lapbelt doesn’t damage the spleen in a crash.
Short adults have the same problem but are not required to be in “Booster seats”. We get sleeves that the shoulder harness is slipped into which puts the belt in the correct positions.
It’s a cash cow.
Yup. We bought 3 different seats for our first kid. When he was born, we had the detachable system so we could load him into the seat in the house and take the whole seat out of the car if he was sleeping, and snap the seat in place.
That seat was only good up to so many pounds/inches (about 8 months). By then, he got a new, bigger, fully anchored seat that stayed in the vehicle. It was designed to install facing forward or backward (backward until they hit one - for neck safety - then forward). They are a pain, because they are hard to remove/install, but they are worth it. He's now in a booster (nice one), and his little sis is in the middle seat.
I prefer the boosters as they are easier to remove and the child and seat are both held by the same belts.
Personally, I prefer 5-point racing harnesses. I've flipped at speed with one of those on, and only came out with some minor bruising. I almost feel nekid in just a lap and shoulder belt.
No thanks.
It wasn’t an invitation - it was a cleaned up way of saying something else.
What are you, some college kid trolling for a little fun now that finals are over?
I would have loved to have a booster when I was a kid. I hated the fact that I couldn't see out most windows, and that the shoulder belts (front seat, anyway) used to dig in. Actually, until I started driving, my family didn't use seat belts, but I still would have loved the booster.
Laws stating kids have to be a certain height are bogus, but I still would have mine in them until either the shoulder belt fits them right, or they can comfortably use the setup you do.
HITH did he have a license in the first place? Prayers for the family--and for our country.
This works just as well. It's 8.95. And it's what I use for me. Used it for my girls too. My nine-year-old has one now. And my sister who is 5'1"
Now they are just beginning to hatch kids of their own and go through all of this.
As for 5 point adult harnesses, it's a shame only some expensive cars come with that option. But I guess with all those mandatory airbags they go for convenience first.
Maybe you and the Princess should have these.
Do you mind sharing where you purchased that item?
Yikes! Actually, I got mine at the Dollar Store. But I found the picture from here...

I’m sure if you look up the name of the product, could could even find it cheaper. They work GREAT. I’m 5’3” and especially in my DH’s truck, the belt cuts me across the neck. Not with this. And they are easy to move to another car, if need be.
I’m 5’1” and have the same problem, and I have two small children that would prefer that to the car seats (they are 6 and 7, but Chinese, so they are small for their age).
Thanks!!
