Mr Obama fears a backlash against U.S. troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Further images purportedly from the 2,000 include one of a naked man covered in excrement with a guard standing in front of him.
Others yet to be released are alleged to show guards threatening to sexually assault a detainee with a broomstick and hooded prisoners in transport planes with copies of Playboy magazine showing naked women open on their laps.
The president had previously committed to allowing them to be seen but changed his mind after senior generals said it could place U.S. troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan in greater danger.
The images were released in Australia yesterday where they were originally obtained by the television channel SBS in the wake of the Abu Ghraib prison abuse scandal.
The release comes at an inopportune time for President Obama who is trying to build bridges with the Islamic world.
President Obama earlier vowed to fight to block the release of the 2,000 'inflammatory' photographs showing the abuse of prisoners by U.S. soldiers. He had previously said the administration would not oppose a court ruling demanding the release of hundreds of the classified photos.
This followed his decision to release the U.S. Justice Department memos detailing CIA interrogation methods, such as waterboarding, that he has now outlawed as torture. Aides say he changed his mind on the photos because 'he did not feel comfortable' with their release. He has asked his legal advisors to present a new case to judges saying that making the pictures public could imperil national security.
The White House legal team is now preparing for a June 9 deadline to present its case that it would be against the interests of national security to make them public.

The whole reason 0bama publicly did a 180 yesterday on the prisoner abuse photos was so that today the headlines would read “Obama’s bid to suppress prisoner abuse pictures fails as images are leaked.”
Notice how the headline leads by saying 0bama tried to prevent their release?
He’s now the “good guy.”

This is so transparant. Obama has the photos leaked to satisfy his kook fringe base, but can still claim that he put national security first and tried to block the release.
I’m sure Obama will join O.J. Simpson in looking for the leaker on every golf course in the D.C. area.
I think the photos were leaked by Democrat Party activists in the CIA - the same ones who leaked all the information to assist in the Left’s hate fest against Bush when he was in office.
They know that if they leak for the correct party, there will be no consequences.
On the other hand, those hoping the CIA goes after SanFranNan with leaks to ruin her, forget about it. The CIA policy is to protect the Chicago Thugs and The Party by hiding information and leak document that will destroy Republicans.
Why did no one leak the memos Cheney has requested that shows the urgency of successfully stopping terrorist operations on US soil after 911? Cause that does not help the CIA’s party President and Congress.

This is like a band’s album being leaked a week before release.
This is so obviously orchestrated even a child should see it. These photos have been held secret for years, and now, day after he decides to NOT release them, they appear.
Is there really anyone that thinks that they stayed under lock all this time only to appear now against his wishes?
