GOP Chairman Michael Steele had opposed the name-changing resolution, and other party leaders have called it "stupid" and "absurd." Republicans on Wednesday abandoned an effort to label their opponents the "Democrat Socialist Party," ending a fight within the GOP ranks that reflected the divide between those who want a more centrist message and those seeking a more aggressive, conservative voice.
Supporters of the resolution asking the Democratic Party to change its name instead agreed to accept language urging Democrats to "stop pushing our country towards socialism and government control."
The initial name-changing resolution had drawn criticism from Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele. Florida GOP Chairman James Greer called the idea "stupid" and Colorado Chairman Dick Wadhams called it "absurd." They said it made Republicans look petty during a troubling time for the nation.

I don't think the two are mutually exclusive. And it's not like calling the Democrats "socialist" is a lie or an unfounded label akin to the RATS calling Republicans "racists" or "arrogant". Also i think that the Democrats being and doing what "Socialists" do IS an issue. It may be the most important issue of our time. And the GOP has every right and maybe even a duty to call them out on it.
Darker and darker! Deeper and deeper!
No wonder the GOP wants to expunge the name "Reagan"!

As long as they control the RNC, not another penny.
NO MORE MONEY FOR THE RNC.
Don't worry about it though.
Ever spend any time there?

This SOB STEELE and his milquetoast cronies don't give a tinkers damn about anyone but themselves, as long as they get to stay in their beloved Washington DC..
SCREW THEM.

“GOP doesn’t want to call the Democrats Socialists because the GOP knows there is almost no difference between the two parties;....”
Don’t like the “Socialists” title???? Okay here ya go...
MARXISTS...

That doesn’t mean the rest of us can’t call em what they are. Socialist
Am I wrong about these azzholes being members of the Socialist Party?
If so disregard this comment.
Why bother? We don't need a party plank that says the sun is hot either. Some things are obvious.
Why waste the People’s time and money over changing a name when we can call them socialists for free? What a stupid idea!!!
Agreed. As true as it is it doesn’t move the ball forward one inch and is actually counterproductive. Independents are already moving our way, along with more conservative Democrats. We’ll need those people to regain lost seats and beat Obama in 2012.
Spot on. Ignore those other commenters.
I’m going to introduce a new name for the Republicans then- how about the Republican Bend Over and Give it to Me Agains?
They were so emboldened in the House that they had a Democrat Socialist Caucus website, this was back in 2004 or thereabouts. There were 70 or so congressmen on it. Yes, US House of Representatives members who were socialists. The website had the Red rose in the logo, red color scheme, all the right things. No kidding.
They took it down when they started getting flak.
Now I believe they are even more emboldened and will start using the name colloquially and then, officially change their party name to include 'Socialist' in there, somewhere.
People, wake up, they are really commies, it is not just a bad dream.
