Banning the pickup truck
Las Vegas Review-Journal ^ | 21 may 09

Posted on 05/21/2009 3:57:09 AM PDT by rellimpank

The Tuesday headline was clear: "Obama's new rules will transform U.S. auto fleet."

The Associated Press picked it up from there: "Some soccer moms will have to give up hulking SUVs. Nearly everybody else will drive smaller cars, and more of them will run on electricity. The higher mileage and emissions standards set by the Obama administration on Tuesday, which begin to take effect in 2012 and are to be achieved by 2016, will transform the American car and truck fleet.

"The new rules would bring new cars and trucks sold in the United States to an average of 35.5 miles per gallon, about 10 mpg more than today's standards. Passenger cars will be required to get 39 mpg, light trucks 30 mpg. That means cars and trucks on American roads will have to become smaller, lighter and more efficient."

Eric Fedewa, vice president of global powertrain forecasting for an auto consulting firm, told The AP the changes will make pickup trucks so much more expensive that they'll be used almost exclusively for work.

Oh, heavens. We're growing faint.

The wise and powerful wizard Obama, having loaned taxpayer money to Detroit to "bail them out" -- thus avoiding simple bankruptcy, where the firms might have shed their overly costly union contracts and emerged to renewed profitability -- now simply decrees what kind of cars Detroit will make. He might as well just put Howard Waxman, Charlie Rangel and Barney Frank in the executive offices at the Big Three, in fedoras and double-breasted striped zoot suits like Ayn Rand's Wesley Mouch, Cuffy Meigs, and Emma Chalmers, and have done with it.

Why is it that cars and trucks need to be so efficient but private jets with empty passenger seats get a pass?

Very cool.

I drove one like that in OR (the single wheel version), along with some International Harvester potato trucks one summer.
I think it had a potato for a gas cap!

I also drove a big tractor to pull trucks out of the sand.
Good times - mid ‘90s

Say good by to the new Camaro, Challenger, and Mustang. Say hello to the new Pinto, Vega, and K-Car. I’m convinced Obama is the bastard child of Jimmy Carter and Oprah Winfrey.

“My husband and I bought a 2009 Chrysler minivan two months ago because we knew that this kind of car probably would not be available next year and also because once the inflation from the “stimulus” bill kicks in, the cost of cars, new and used, will increase significantly.”

Yea - I hate to help kick-start the Obamination, but he’s giving me no choice. I have the cash, so why not...get my vehicle and worry about why I need it later. It worked for freon, Dursban, and now light bulbs...why not?

If they ‘take my truck off the road’, does that mean they will either pipe water 7 miles to my property (we have to haul it) or pay to drill & develop a well...at local average depths of 800-900 feet?

Or is their ‘solution’ to force us all to move into a government run (no guns allowed, of course) condos?

“He can give them all the fodder they want, because they’ll never use it. God forbid a Republican candidate say something other than, “I’m sure my opponent is patriotic, God-fearing, honest, devoted and a great husband, too, but his 38% tax rate is higher than my proposed 37.9% tax rate.””

About as I explain it. The country is sliding down with a slope of -2X when the Reps are in power and -3x with the Dems. So, Republicans are better, because our day of reconning is a bit further in the future.

Pretty sad that we don’t have another choice....like a party that might ask why New Jersey needs such a high income tax when it didn’t need one at all 35 years ago, or why Wisconsin needs 6% sales tax now when it was 4% a few decades ago (it’s not like the sales tax revenues will not go up with inflation, or population growth, even at the same rate)

But that’s life when most of the country expects ‘government’ to take care of all their needs.

“These new regulations definitely hurt larger families since there is no vehicle that meets the new CAFE standards that would be large enough to hold more than 4 or 5 people. In other words, larger families would have to take 2 cars in order to go somewhere together, which would negate any fuel savings. But Obama obviously doesn’t care what impact these rules have on the average citizens. After all, he isn’t going to be driven around in a hybrid. What a hypocrite.”

If only that was the case. In fact, the addition of child seats, seat belt laws, and now the requirement to buy nano-cars will convince millions of families that having more than one, or God-forbid, two, kids would be very expensive and disruptive. This is EXACTLY what this bunch wants, and it will help KILL this country.

But that’s ‘change’, I guess.

Sure gonna put a crimp on Texan’s. Most families outside of large cities have a pickup truck and we have ‘l o n g’ roads to travel.

“You lead by example, whether you want to or not!....
This means that unless the Federal Government gets rid of all those gas guzzleing SUV’s, NO ONE is going to take 0bama and his administration seriously or respect them.”

0bama is not a leader. He is a dictator. Get it? I think you are under the impression the 0bama cares what anybody thinks. Look at the French aristocracy before the French revolution. Did they care?

“All animals are equal but some are more equal than others.”

Guess where you fall.

This is heading to a dictatorship. 0bama is just getting warmed up. Health care, oil, consumer goods, financials, auto.

He will not stop.

He isn’t leading by example. He is dictating.

“I’m anxiously waiting for Obama to start carting his arrogant ass around in a stretched, up-armored smart car.”

He won’t ever do it and won’t care. He doesn’t care about being seen as a hypocrite. Dictators don’t care about hypocrisy.

I ain’t givin’ up my F-150! That’s why there’s a gun rack on the back window.

Yeah Barry the Messiah and Teleprompter of the United States....let's kill off Ford too while were at it...right now Ford can sell every F-150 it makes (a new one to me every 4 years). I just hauled a truckload of building materials to my commercial property. How am I going to do that in BO's version of a Hugo? This joke of a leader is a frikken idiot.

I had my carpet cleaned today - by the owner of the company. He had to let his crew go - as he could no longer afford to pay for any help.

He said if this goes through - he will have to file bankruptcy - as he has to use a large truck to maintain his business.

My Air Conditioner repair man told me two days ago, that the company he has worked for (for 30 years) had over 50 employees a year ago - today? They are down to 14.

The RV business is going to suffer too. What am I supposed to pull my 30 ft travel trailer with? Shaking my head again & thinking it IS going to get much worse for us.

That snooty elitist and his ilk have never had anything to do with an RV of any kind. Of course until he got his armored Caddy.
