(McCain) was in high spirits, and we talked for a while about the Obama Administration's embrace of realpolitik, Pakistan, Iran, the whole nine yards. But first I asked him about Dick Cheney and his defense of Bush Administration torture policies. He told me of his fundamental disagreement with Cheney: "When you have a majority of Americans, seventy-something percent, saying we shouldn't torture, then I'm not sure it helps for the Vice President to go out and continue to espouse that position," he said. "But look, he's free to talk. He's a former Vice President of the United States. I just don't see where it helps."
And then he got acerbic: Cheney, he says, "believes that waterboarding doesn't fall under the Geneva Conventions and that it's not a form of torture. But you know, it goes back to the Spanish Inquisition."

You could argue that, in the short term, a McCain presidency would have been better for the country, but it would have killed the conservative movement for a generation.
To: kristinn
Is McCain claiming that our own military regularly tortures thousands of officers who are being trained to resist interrogation?

I cannot detest this man any more than I do right now.
Waterboarding saved us from a terrorist attack in L.A.
John McCain is the enemy of national security.
Take your idiot daughter and drop off the face of the earth, you self-centered, backstabbing piece of crap.

If these people wore uniforms and respected the rule of law, then I'd be right with McCain. But, they don't. They operate without regard to any western principles of honorable war. Paraphrasing Churchill, he said that the enemy is the one that defines the rules of engagement. Our enemy, this enemy defines the rules of engagement as anything goes, at anytime towards anyone.
Waterboarding not only ISN'T torture under their rules, it's really just light stretching before the warm-up.

Exactly when do the rank and file realize their party leaders have no intention of accepting Conservative principles?

He's a complete a-hole. I think he is mentally ill and he would have been only slightly better than what we have now. Do we have a candidate to challenge him? To see him retired and his fat a$$ daughter off the national scene is something to work for.

"Cheney, he says, "believes that waterboarding doesn't fall under the Geneva Conventions..." Beside the point. I think Cheney thinks the Geneva Conventions don't apply...because they don't. I guess Sen. McCain wasn't there the day they tought the Senate about treaties.

Aren’t losing Presidential candidates supposed to go away for awhile?
I guess I no longer have a party affiliation. These people care more about illegal Mexican immigrants than they do about the American public.

Hey mccain....WE DON’T TORTURE!!! Waterboarding with a dr standing by is hardly life threatening. The word torture has been hijacked by these weenies.

McCain ran a disgraceful campaign. The only energy it had came from Palin.
Now, when the GOP finally gets Obama on the defensive, McCain attacks the GOP.
Listen Johnie, your years in a POW camp give you no special expertise on torture/interrogation techniques.
If anything, it probably disqualifies you from being rational and objective about the problem of getting information from a zealous fanatical terrorist.
Bottom line is that you have sympathy and empathy for ruthless sub humans who deserve to be treated as combatants who do not wear uniforms....get it Johny...you are uselss on this issue.
You are the weak link.
