President Barack Obama sent a wreath Monday to a memorial for soldiers who fought on the side of slavery during the Civil War, continuing a 90-year-old Memorial Day tradition despite being urged by historians to “break this chain of racism.”
The first black U.S. president also started a new tradition by sending a wreath to the African American Civil War Memorial in Washington honoring the 200,000 black soldiers who fought for Union forces in America’s bloodiest conflict.
“We ask you to break this chain of racism stretching back to Woodrow Wilson and not send a wreath or other token of esteem to the Arlington Confederate Monument,” a group of historians urged Obama earlier this month.
“This monument should not be elevated in prestige above other monuments by a presidential wreath,” the scholars said.
Obama did not mention the controversy in remarks at Arlington National Cemetary after laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns, which holds the remains of unidentified soldiers from World Wars I and II and the Korean War.
The cemetary is built on the former estate of General Robert E. Lee, who led the Condederate forces and is revered in American history despite fighting on behalf of states who wanted slavery to continue and spread.
Lee’s home still stands at the top of the hill overlooking nearly a quarter of a million graves and across the Potomac River from the memorial to slain President Abraham Lincoln, who led the Union to victory in the conflict from 1861 to 1865 and was assassinated just after the war was won.

Obama also sent wreaths to memorials for those who died in the explosion of the USS Maine and in the Spanish American war.

Treason? Only to a Yankee statist boot licker would defending your homeland be treason. My guess Pres. Johnson never used the word treason, just a hunch. I'm not an expert post Civil War useless Yankee pardons/amnesty.
"Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort." That's in that Constitution thingy that you hate so much.
My guess Pres. Johnson never used the word treason, just a hunch.
You see, that's your problem. You prefer hunch to fact. And as usual, your hunch is wrong. From his fourth proclamation:
"Now, therefore, be it known that I, Andrew Johnson President of the United States, by virtue of the power and authority in me vested by the Constitution and in the name of the sovereign people of the United States, do hereby proclaim and declare unconditionally and without reservation, to all and to every person who, directly or indirectly, participated in the late insurrection or rebellion a full pardon and amnesty for the offense of treason against the United States or of adhering to their enemies during the late civil war, with restoration of all rights, privileges, and immunities under the Constitution and the laws which have been made in pursuance thereof."
That's the one that got Lee and Davis off the hook.
I'm not an expert post Civil War useless Yankee pardons/amnesty.
The list of things that you are not an expert on is no doubt infinite.
“I guess these “historians” just forget about the thousands of Black Americans — many freedmen — who fought FOR the Confederacy? I suppose they also neglected to learn about the thousands of native Americans from “Indian Territory” (aka Oklahoma) who fought FOR the Confederacy under the leadership of Cherokee chief Stand Watie? Oh, almost NONE of them owned a slave..!”
Yes, some of the slaves fought with the Confederacy. Some of their testimonies are in this book.
http://jesusweptanamericanstory.blogspot.com/
Actually, a good number of Cherokees, including Watie, owned slaves.
Oh, slavery never existed in the North and there weren’t any slaves in any Northern States before, during, and after the War. Northern ships didn’t bring the slaves to America. You funny. ;0)
And where have I denied any of that?
A 19th century exec. order? Pres. Johnson proclaims this while he is being impeached? CYA. I don't claim to know the details of post war machinations, to forgive that which needed no forgiving IMHO.
No, a presidential pardon. Again, going to that Constitution thingy that you detest so much, Article II, Section 2: "The President...shall have Power to Grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offenses against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment."
I don't claim to know the details of post war machinations, to forgive that which needed no forgiving IMHO.
When you admit to not knowing the details of the rest of the rebellion then I'll be impressed.
A war of Southern Independence, not a "rebellion". End the occupation.
You do know that to be a fact. That’s extremely odd. Why don’t you condemn the Northern States that had Slaves? How many Northern States had slaves before the War Between the States?
Rebellion is "open, armed, and usually unsuccessful defiance of or opposition to an established government." An accurate description of the rebel effort.
I don't condemn the South for having slaves. What I condemn is the idiotic, revisionist notion that defense of slavery wasn't the primary motivating factor for the Southern rebellion in the first place.
The same kind of tactics are being used against people now as were used against the Southern States. The elite are pushing the More Than Equal rights, the women’s lib, The homosexual agenda, the abortion issue, the environmental issue, the illegal immigration issue and a number of other things. It is all about control and money.
Other people condemn the idiotic notion that slavery was the primary motivating factor for the South’s secession. :0)
Yep. In 1861 it was all about the Southern desire to keep controlling their slaves and making money off them by moving to the territories.
More like the North losing the money from the South. ;o)
No. Losing the disproportionately small percentage of the total tariff revenue that the South provided would have been an annoyance. But it would hardly have been fatal.
Big money would have taken a pretty good hit. That would have been more than an annoyance.
Talk about annoyance. Good Day.
