Left Out of D-Day Events, Queen Elizabeth Is Fuming
New York Times ^ | May 27, 2009

Posted on 05/28/2009 9:12:50 AM PDT by reaganaut1

Queen Elizabeth is not amused.

Indeed, she is decidedly displeased, angry even, that she was not invited to join President Obama and France’s president, Nicolas Sarkozy, next week at commemorations of the 65th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy, according to reports published in Britain’s mass-circulation tabloid newspapers on Wednesday. Pointedly, Buckingham Palace did not deny the reports.

The queen, who is 83, is the only living head of state who served in uniform during World War II. As Elizabeth Windsor, service number 230873, she volunteered as a subaltern in the Women’s Auxiliary Territorial Service, training as a driver and a mechanic. Eventually, she drove military trucks in support roles in England.

While serving, she met the supreme Allied commander for the D-Day landings, Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, and developed a fondness for him, according to several biographies. This prompted Queen Elizabeth, who was crowned in June 1953, to say in later years that he was the American president with whom she felt most at ease.

But on June 6, when Mr. Obama and Mr. Sarkozy attend commemorations at the iconic locations associated with the American D-Day assault — Utah Beach, the town of Ste.-Mère-Église, where the first United States paratroopers landed, and the American war cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer — the highest-ranking British representative will be Prime Minister Gordon Brown. His main role will be at ceremonies at the town of Arromanches, near the beaches where British troops landed.

How the queen came to be excluded has become entangled in a thicket of diplomatic missteps, or misunderstandings, depending on whether the account is given in London or Paris.

Who cares about a privileged old white woman? /s

I have long admired the Queen -- to me she represents an older, better Britain. In her life she has done her duty and acted with the dignity appropriate to the Queen of England. One cannot say that about Prince Charles, "the People's Princess", and the rest of the royal family.

This is a total, absolute international disgrace.

Whomever is responsible for this shameful omission should be publicly humiliated and scorned for this.

Seems to be the hallmark of Obama's foreign policy, such as it is...

You have to understand — the Queen is the embodiment of the state in Britain (and Canada, along with several other Commonwealth countries). This is an insult to Britain (and other Commenwealth countries) even greater than a flag trampling event.

"She is an old , stupid, rich white lady."

In the event that you didn't forget the sarcasm tag; she is certainly old, rich, Caucasian and she is definitely a lady.

Could you please provide some examples of what she has done that would qualify her as "stupid"?

Thanks.

Not only should she send it back, the Queen ought to add a few choice words to it as well.

UGH!! why does he keep insulting our friends, while extending every indulgence to our enemies???

ah, perhaps we are seeing who he considers “friends” and who he considers “enemies.”

He continues to show disdain for this great country of ours every day. He has no love for America.

I disagree. She represents the best of Britain, which is sadly dying as their culture (and ours) succumbs to multicultural nonsense. When Elizabeth II goes and her son ascends to the throne, Britain will have lost something truly special.

She has earned the right to be at the D-Day commemoration. It is Hussein Obama - the America hating Muslim Marxist - who doesn’t deserve to stand on that hallowed ground.

In all fairness, this gaffe isn't Obama's doing. He's a guest at Sarkozy's event. The blame lies with the French for not inviting Queen Elizabeth, and maybe with Gordon Brown, the British PM, for not making it clear to the French that she expected to attend.

Abraham Lincoln, but that’s not the point. Obambi sent it BACK to the UK - he didn’t put it in another location in the White House, or send it to the Smithsonian - no, he purposely wanted to send a “message”.

I certainly hope that is true but seriously have my doubts now. If Iran moved across the border would we do more than just accelerate our retreat? We'd be told by Obama that like Korea, it just isn't that important.

Amen to that. She served her country in WWII when she could have relocated to Canada, or just stayed at home. But she didn't, she served. Her husband served honorable in the Royal Navy.

Righto, she is tougher and smarter than 0 and the rest of the twits in office now.

I recently heard an inspiring recording of Princess Elizabeth at about age 12 delivering a radio address cheering on her countrymen in the throes of war. The King and Queen never sent Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret out of London during the blitz, as so many other families did, believing their duty was to remain with their people.

Queen Eliz has conducted herself with dignity at all times and discharged the duties of her position without fail. For this reason alone, she'd be an embarrassment to the cheap chiseling money grabbing country hating louts in office now and of course they don't want a public comparison.

As far as you know. Barry might have insisted that she not be there or failed to speak up and insist that she should be. We don't know. But the event has not happened yet and there is ample time for France to correct the "mistake" if they so desired. The fact that the royals are going public with this means that she was purposely left out by "someone".
