Democrats again recruiting Shuler for Senate
Blue Ridge Now ^ | May 29, 2009 | James Shea

Rep. Heath Shuler is being recruited again to run for the Senate, and the Western North Carolina congressman might take them up on that idea.

Shuler, D-Waynesville, told the Times-News in November that he was considering challenging Sen. Richard Burr in 2010. After some thought, he announced that he was not going to run against Burr, citing the time he would be away from his family during a statewide campaign.

In recent weeks, however, the buzz has started again that Shuler was exploring a run against Burr. The flames were only fanned when Attorney General Roy Cooper said he was not going to run for the senate.

Some Western North Carolina Democrats are unsure about a Shuler run for Senate. Shuler is a conservative Democrat and has been able to form relationships with people throughout the district.

“I think he does a great job as congressman,” Henderson County Democratic Party Chairman Doug Freeman said. “He does a good job representing the district, but I’m not sure the district represents the state. ... If he chooses to run against Burr, we could turn the district over to the Republicans.”

Shuler's seat eyed

Is Heath Shuler reconsidering his decision not to challenge Richard Burr?

Washington Republicans must think so.

They're trying to recruit someone to step up and seek Shuler's seat if he abandons it to run for the Senate.

"I’ve had a couple of calls from Washington already," said state Sen. Tom Apodaca.

The National Republican Congressional Committee asked him to run. "I didn’t make any commitments to them," Apodaca said.

Apodaca, who considered and rejected a 2008 run against Shuler, says he's focused for now on his duties in Raleigh.

Also, James Shea of the Times-News reports some of the rumblings on the Shuler will-he-or-won't-he front. State Dems chairman David Young thinks he's reconsidering his options.

NC began really moving left after Senator Helms died last July 4. It’s much like VA now.

Um... I sure as hell hope they aren't seeking recruits ONLY if Shuler runs for the Senate. They should be seeking the seat regardless of what Shuler does.

Well, VA will be electing a Republican Governor in November. NC went for the False Messiah because of Bob Barr.

“Well, VA will be electing a Republican Governor in November.”

I fervently hope so, but it isn’t in the bag yet. The dems are on a winning streak here in VA, and Gov. Tiny Tim signed into law a bill allowing 100% early voting.

The state goes against the grain with the national administration. Remember in the ‘70s with Carter, they had GOP Governors, in the ‘80s they had rodents (three in a row: Robb, Baliles & Wilder), and back to Republicans under Clintoon. All the Dems trail our guy. Let’s hope they put up the crook McAuliffe.

To be precise, it is like Northern Virginia against rural virgina and Triangle area(Chapel hill, Raleigh, Durham) aginst the rest of North Carolina. Due to relatively good economy in North Carolina, lot of people from North East moved or still moving to the triangle area. It is just eating the margin of western north Carolina, which is hugely conservative.

Pro-life, pro-gun, anti-gay marriage Shuler would shred Burr.

Schuler will win the seat because Dems lie about philosophy and as a Blue Dog, his lies to be a conserv in his own district worked. It will work again. Dems are just more ruthless and smarter politically than Pubs. Since conservs are now on the outs in the RNC, it will continue like this and Dems will make this nation a one party state. Oh well, liars often fool people and the Dems have made it an art.

Polls say otherwise. The Lousy lying Democrappy Pelosi poodle would have a lot of Obama-supporting dumb votes to explain...

and btw how is ‘anti-gay marriage’ proof of anything? Obama supposedly was but he put a gay activist on his ‘faith council’ and lets people who are pro-gay-marriage in his team. Its obvious he just did the expedient thing.

The Democrats are first and foremost liar who play the voters for fools. Shuler is for whatever will get him elected. End of story.

While I agree it works for the Dems for a while, it stops working when the Dems have power. Look at 1994. Once their agenda is exposed, people wake up.

Let schuler explain to the conservative NC voters if a pro-roe-v-wade pro-gay-marriage pro-reverse-discrimination racial identity liberal activist would get his vote for SCOTUS.

Lies can only carry you so far.

People get caught up in movements and the Obowel was certainly a catalyst. Once people see that 15 months into his administration nothing has really gotten better the pendulum will swing back.

Let's hope the repubs learn something while wandering in the wilderness

Here’s hoping McDonnell takes the Governorship. It will be telling to see where McDonnell stands in the polls after the primary is over and the Dems rally around Terry McAwful.

For the past 4 years, the GOP candidate begins ahead in the polls. Kilgore, Allen, and McCain started with the lead in their races. As the race moved closer to election day and the candidates were more scruntized, the Dem won.

There are two main problems with Shuler for Senate. First, he is not the sharpest tool in the shed, though he has some very able staffers. Second, the mountains are the third smallest population in the state. Midstate - research triangle - is largest, coast is second, mountains are third.

I don't think he would get the nomination. If he did, I don't think he would win. IMHO.
