DNA Fence Posts Hold Back Cancer. . . and Evolution

by Brian Thomas, M.S.*

New research has uncovered a tiny protein that, when it breaks down, leads to cancer. This useful protein attaches to DNA in certain places and serves as a marker or “fence post.” These fence posts keep certain zones of DNA accessible to the cell regulatory mechanisms that activate gene expression to produce other proteins. If the protein posts are knocked down, these regions of DNA become inaccessible and the cells become cancerous. But how could cells have evolved if the necessary restructuring of their DNA, and therefore of these critical posts, would have likely led to their demise?...

It’s only a very small sub-set of Christianity that sees some sort of dividing barrier between evolution and Christian faith.

The Vatican hasn’t updated its dress code since 1250 and even they find this a little puzzling.

You couldn't be more wrong. The following Gallop polls were for the general population. Needless to say, the percentage of Christians holding the creatiionist view is much, much higher!

God created man pretty much in his present form at one time within the last 10,000 years. Man has developed over millions of years from less advanced forms of life, but God guided this process, including man's creation. Man has developed over millions of years from less advanced forms of life. God had no part in this process.

So in 2004, 51% thought we came from dirty apes? Those numbers are STUNNING! I figured it would be much, much smaller... 25% tops, I would have guessed.

People must be listening to Pope Benedict XIV:

"This clash is an absurdity because on one hand there is much scientific proof in favor of evolution, which appears as a reality that we must see and which enriches our understanding of life and being as such."

This was for America was it not?

Christianity in America is a special beast that is very different from the global Christian community. The Roman Catholic & Eastern Orthodox communions have all officially said they simply see no conflict there. So have a number of protestant churches.

It’s been quoted in this thread already but it deserves saying again:

“This clash is an absurdity because on one hand there is much scientific proof in favor of evolution, which appears as a reality that we must see and which enriches our understanding of life and being as such.” — Benedict XVI

PRINCETON, NJ -- On the eve of the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin's birth, a new Gallup Poll shows that only 39% of Americans say they "believe in the theory of evolution,"

Lolz: "There is a strong relationship between education and belief in Darwin's theory, as might be expected, ranging from 21% of those with high-school educations or less to 74% of those with postgraduate degrees." :-)

There was also a stong correlation between education level in the Soviet Union and membership in the CPSU.

“So, if these protein fence posts break down, the cell does, too. But how could macroevolution have occurred without rearranging significant portions of DNA, including these essential, precisely-structured areas?”

—Is there some reason that those particular genes would need rearranged?

“If some physical random process like mutation added new DNA or rearranged portions of it, it eventually would have knocked out one of these fence posts, resulting in cancer and possibly the death of the organism.”

—Yeah... that’s probably why the “fence posts” are there.
I would bet the ranch though that as various people’s dna are compared, variants in those genes WILL be found (if they haven’t already).

“If a lizard’s front limbs were significantly lengthened to become more wing-like—which must have happened for the evolutionary story of bird origins to be true—then the transitional creature would be both unable to fly and insufficiently mobile on land. A lizard’s legs are the size they are because they are proportioned to support the reptile’s weight and specific mode of locomotion.”

—I haven’t heard the “birds evolved from lizards” idea before. It’s believed they came from bipedal dinos.

“The precise structure of lizard limbs is like the structure of the genetic fence posts.”

—Lizards are a group of many species, each with many variations - each made of many populations with many variations - each made of individuals with many variations.

Sorry if you’ve heard it before.

My ideas are hardly controversial in conservative forums the world over. The collision between evolution and faith appears to be largely peculiar to America. This was not always the case but it is increasingly so.

"The collision between evolution and faith appears to be largely peculiar to America."

That is because this is one of the places that has a few of the faithful still hanging on to the truth of God's word.

Much of the world has invented a convenient god and a convenient Christ. The God and Christ of the Bible are most inconvenient for those that reject God's declaration that the wisdom of men is foolishness.
