Ithaca drafts bike-registration law
Fingerlakes1.com Local Network ^ | 06/03/09

Anyone who rides a bike anywhere in the city would have to register it with the City of Ithaca or face a $10 fine, based on a law being considered tonight by Common Council.

The law would apply not just to city residents, but to anyone who rides in the city, including visitors

The purpose of the new law is to support and encourage bicycle riding, to assist in documenting bikes for planning purposes, to disseminate information to bike riders, and to facilitate the return of lost or stolen bikes, according to the Common Council's resolution.

My hometown also had registration which was supposed to aid in recovery of stolen bicycles. My bicycle was stolen ane we periodically checked with police to see if had been recovered and we were told no. My dad finally insisted on looking at the recovered bicycles. My bike was there complete with registration tag. (Unclaimed bikes were auctioned off and the proceeds went to the PBA)

Do they really want to tie up their police department with that kind of needless busywork?

Governments see things like this as more important than preventing real crime. Control is all.

I guess all of that heavy breathing as you pedal uphill puts too much CO2 in the air.

LOL!

BUMP!

Look for ‘The People’s Republik of Madistan’ to follow suit.

I LOVE my bike, but only ride it on the bike trails and on my own land with the dogs chasing behind.

I can’t believe bicyclists aren’t injured or killed around here on a daily basis between the way they DISOBEY all road rules, and ride down the middle of all of our country roads while training for The Ironman Race. *Rolleyes*

Nearly hit one on my way to work the other day. She was right in the middle of the road, on the other side of the crest of a hill. *SCREEEEEEEEEEEECH*

Dumb@ss.

Fortunately mine was never stolen. My point was that bike registration isn’t something new. Well, forced registration is. In Toledo kids actually got their bikes back if the registration number hadn’t been defaced.

Hey! That's a real concern! All those fitness freaks are adding billions of tons of CO2 to the air each year, and causing "gore bull warming". They should have to pay a carbon fitness tax to stop this "gorebull warming".

The average couch potato is the least CO2 producing type of human, producing about 1/2 ton of CO2 per year. The fitness freak, marathon runner, cyclist etc. produces 10 times that much, about 5 tons min. CO2 per year!

The purpose of the new law is... to confiscate more money for the government

What in God's name is WRONG with the people who run this city ? Just when you think you've seen the most ridiculous idea coming from this place, something even more ridiculous appears.

Obligatory:

If bicycles are outlawed, only outlaws will have bicycles.

“Registration” is never about bikes, or boats, or guns, or cars.

What gets registered is people. So that liberals and other fascists can control people.””

Everything that’s old is new again. When I was a child in Colorado Springs, we had to take our bikes down to the fire station to get bicycle tags. Every now and again I’ll come across a vintage bicycle with tags issues by one city or another. It used to be fairly common. I think they were only $2 though.
