Obama's marriage was on brink of collapse, says book
The Telegraph ^ | 6/6/2009 | Leonard Doyle

Barack and Michelle Obama's fairytale love story of an adoring couple propelled on to the international stage has caught the imagination of millions.

Their regular Friday "date nights" make the television news, and there was a stir recently when they caught Air Force One for a night at the theatre in Manhattan.

This weekend, in the aftermath of the D-Day celebrations, they are in Paris with their young daughters - having turned down an invitation for dinner with President Nicolas Sarkozy and his wife Carla in favour of a more intimate family event.

But it was not always wedded bliss for the First Couple. A new book, Renegade, about Mr Obama's unlikely run for the presidency, recounts a tense period in 2000 when the Obamas' marriage was on the brink of collapse because of his restless political hunger and the family's shattered finances.

"There was little conversation and even less romance," wrote the Birmingham-born Mr Wolffe, who covered Obama's campaign for Newsweek magazine. "She was angry at his selfishness and careerism; he thought she was cold and ungrateful."

At the time, Mr Obama was stuck on the lowest step of the political ladder. As a mere state senator in Illinois, he had challenged a popular incumbent in a Democratic primary by running against Bobby Rush, a former Black Panther from Chicago. Mr Obama was trounced by a dismal 2-1 margin.

His wife was new to motherhood, at home with their first daughter Malia, just two years old at the time. "She hated the failed race for Congress in 2000, and their marriage was strained by the time their younger daughter, Sasha, was born. Politics seemed like a waste of time to Michelle," the book says.

Mr Obama's troubles were compounded when he discovered that he was not on the guest

I tried. I was polite. The responses I got mostly were not.

But that’s how I learn who around here is smart and who is stupid. With that in mind, can you explain exactly what you meant in your post to me?

Thanks.

Showing up (yesterday basically) and telling people to go on the ignore list is not polite.

There’s an ‘ignore’ list?

Where do I find that?

Thanks for your help and advice.

Seriously...can anyone explain the purpose of these nights?

A good way of keeping the old man away from rough trade?

You're a liar. You said this to me in post #118...

"At any rate, you seem to be as arrogant as zero is, so we can discontinue this dialog. I was trying to be polite to you by not directly pointing out that your know-it-all crap was not even applicable to what I’m talking about,..."

I would love for you to show where I was in any way impolite before that post to me. But you can't because ... you're a liar.

yeah go cry to the Moderator and say these bad men hurt my feelings and I don't want them to post to me any more. He won't listen to you though being a noob and all. If you have creative thoughts to add, be civil, please.

I’ve been quite civil. Perhaps you could think out of the box and not assume that the noob is always in the wrong. Life is a continuum. You can be right one day and wrong the next, without regard to whomever else is there at the moment and whether you ever met that person before or not because ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ are self-generated. A new rider getting on the bus with you doesn’t change that. Just a thought for you to consider.

So is there or isn’t there an ‘ignore’ function?

Thanks.

Black culture doesn’t embrace marriage which is why black culture is in the state that it’s in.

While true, it doesn't get at the reason. Although you hint at it. After WW-II, and especially during the 1960s, the welfare state disproportionately "went after" black women. One thing they did was to deny payments to a family with an able bodied man in the house. So they left, kinda sorta, so that their wife or SO could get that welfare check. The woman found out they didn't need the men, beyond getting the babies started. That led to what we have today. Once again, government creates it's own problems to solve.

Thanks.

The latest theory is that I’m wrong because I’m new here. :)

Apparently I missed Newton’s Law that says that anyone who is new cannot possibly be right, lol! ;)

Didn’t say it was OK; what’s interesting is that someone admitted it, as though the end justified the means. In a better world, that would be headline news and the making of a one-termer. Of course, in a perfect world, this man would still be a community organizer.

You’re 100% correct. That’s exactly what happened. Oddly, it was a rat who warned of what it would lead to. Pat Moynihan said this would lead to the demise of the family, crime, worse poverty than ever, and all the attendant ills. He was 100% prescient. “Government” became the husbands and baby daddies, even though the feminazi movement was constantly downgrading and trivializing men and the need for fathers. Obviously there was a need or there would have been no need for a government role in their support.

But I was simply pointing out that black Americans have never had a black president as a role model before, so his image will carry much more weight than other positive black role models (the few that have emerged over the years) and that, therefore, we are better off that zero’s image among black Americans not fit the stereotypical but accurate elements of the largely unsuccessful black culture. I was not addressing the entire sociological/economic background and causation of black culture’s problems. They are what they are NOW, regardless of how it all came about. Going forward, anything that can improve that failed culture and perhaps curtail the bad behaviors (even if it doesn’t - and it won’t - impact/improve all aspects across the board) is a good thing, as I see it. Fewer criminals, fewer bastards, the demise of most filthy rap and fewer asses hanging out with pants slid down to the knees would be an improvement. :)
