Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) told Chris Wallace on "Fox News Sunday" that President Barack Obama's proposed health care plan is the "first step in destroying the best health care system the world has ever known."
"When the government is involved more and more in the details," Shelby said, "and you start the one-pay deal and you got the government competing with private enterprise with all the incentives the government has and the power, they can destroy the marketplace for health care and it will be a mistake and the American people better be careful in what they want."

Obama should fix Medicare first, to prove he knows how to fix something. Then, after he proves he knows how to do it, then we can talk about the larger heath care system.
Where’s the Captain Obvious graphic?
Unfortunately, Shelby is right but no one is listening. It’s taken years to prime the masses for government run health care and they aren’t going to back off now.
0bama's actually quite the "git 'er done!" type.
Yes, we have the best health care system in the world, BUT, too many working middle class people can’t afford it.
Yeah, its a good system. The problem is that we can’t afford it any more. Its been that way for a while. To get costs under control, you have to get back to making people responsible for their own medical bills. Once this happens, costs will go down in a hurry as people opt for what they can afford rather than gold plated care on someone else’s dime.
You are right on that. Let the government fix the Health Care they are already responsible for. I love Richard Shelby. Why does it take a recovered Democrat to lead the charge? The best Republican President in my lifetime was a recovered Democrat.
If they control your health care, they control you totally. I believe that is the plan.
Not so obvious to many.
I’m middle class and I have great healthcare. I even had AETNA when I was working construction and they covered me quite well.
I’m sure it is for Shelby. Just give us his health plan, and we’re all set.
The US spends almost 15% of GDP and only covers 85% of the population achieving lower life expectancy than any other industrialized country with a universal health care system.
The US has the worlds best university system and the medical research and medical universities are a part of that. Thus, it has the worlds most advanced medicine. This IS NOT the health care system in general. Just like manufacturing the worlds best military and high tech gadgetry IS NOT the world best manufacturing base.
The GOP had its chance for a grand bargain of Tort Reform and some form of basic health coverage for all Americans that would lower cost. W. and his GOP co-wimps blew it and now America is going to get a terrible deal that is not going to lower cost one iota.
The catastrophe that is about to happen is a result of Republican cowardice.
What Shelby is saying however is pure BS in terms of the real facts.
The German, French and Japanese systems are so far superior and cheaper as to make anyone with a clue know how laughable and Goebbel-esque propaganda based lying is going on.
So there, I called the lie. On the other hand, I don't agree with what Obama is going to do. It makes no economic sense and although it may cover a few more people, it will not improve the American system. That cant be done until the Agency problem is solved.
And yet they drive cars around and take vacations and have internet and cable television. They wear new clothes, use riding lawnmowers, wear $100 sneakers... I don't buy the crap that working middle class can't afford it. They make choices, as do I, on what they spend money on.
Besides that, if they can't afford to pay for health care with the private sector running it, how will they possibly pay the government for their health care?
There are few people who can't afford health care, and there are provisions for taking care of those people. If a middle class working person doesn't have health care, it is because he chose to spend his money on something else.
I live in Alabama and I was just talking the other day to my dad (who also lives in AL) about what great Senators we have (Shelby and Sessions). I think I would take those two over almost any other combo.
I didn’t say no middle class people couldn’t afford it, but too many couldn’t. I live in Maine, a small businessman, and I can’t afford a decent policy and, being completely honest here, most of the business owners we deal with don’t have any either!! And, it seems to be getting worse.
I don’t know what the answer is....
That’s just plain pompous bullsh*t!
That IS the fascist Barack Hussein Obama II.
Fair enough. We need to kick the illegals out. If it weren’t the fact that they HAVE to be given medical attention then the demand would not be so high and prices would go down. Or at least thats my simplistic view.
