~The FReeper Canteen Presents~ Road Trip: NAS Oceana, Virginia
Naval Air Station Oceana or NAS Oceana (IATA: NTU, ICAO: KNTU, FAA LID: NTU) is a military airport located in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and is a United States Navy Master Jet Base. It is also known as Apollo Soucek Field, named after Lieutenant (later Admiral) Apollo Soucek, who was a Navy Test Pilot and world record altitude holder in 1930, having flown a Curtiss "Hawk" biplane to an altitude of 43,166 feet. Home to eighteen strike fighter squadrons of F/A-18 Hornets and F/A-18 Super Hornets, the base is the sole East Coast Master Jet Base and home to all the east coast strike-fighter (VFA) units (excluding VFA-86 and Marine Corps VMFA squadrons). Training is conducted by VFA-106 Gladiators in their F/A-18C/D Hornets and F/A-18E/F Super Hornets.
Naval Air Station Oceana was commissioned August 17, 1943. Then the area now known as Oceana was a swampy wasteland. Today it is a complex with more than seven miles of runways and the latest equipment to serve military air traffic. It is manned by more than 14,600 military personnel, 2,000 civilians and is home to 19 fighter/attack squadrons flying the Navy's most advanced aircraft. In the years since World War II, it has taken its place in the list of essential installations and is rightly considered a "Master Jet Base."
In November 1940, the U.S. Government purchased 328.95 acres that was to become NAS Oceana and constructed a small airfield with 32 officers and 172 enlisted men assigned. At that time it was located in an almost inaccessible area--too far from Norfolk for civilian usage, but close enough to the Atlantic Ocean for the Navy's purposes. Nevertheless, asphalt runways were started on December 31, 1940, and completed in November 1941. Learn More About The History Of NAS Oceana HERE!
Today NAS Oceana operates 18 F/A -18 Hornet squadrons including Fleet Composite Squadron Twelve (VFC-12), a squadron that performs air combat maneuvering training. Oceana's Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Units train highly qualified maintenance technicians for the squadrons. NAS Oceana is also the home of Fleet Logistics Support Squadron Five Six (VR-56).
 Strike Fighter Wing Atlantic is the Navy's largest type wing flying more than 300 aircraft composed of six different variants of the FA-18 Hornet and Super Hornet. The wing, based at NAS Oceana, is also home to the east coast FA-18 Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS) which trains pilots and Weapons System Operators (WSOs) in the Hornet and Super Hornet before they are assigned to operational fleet squadrons. The fleet squadrons deploy as part of Carrier Air Wings (CVWs) on aircraft carriers on both the east and west coasts. Five of the CVWs are under the command of CSFWL.
Learn More About NAS Oceana HERE!
The Military Aviation Museum, located at the Virginia Beach Airport is home to one of the largest private collections of World War 2 and Korean War era fighters, bombers, trainers and seaplanes. Many aircraft have been fully restored to their World War II condition and are available for flight demonstration, static display or movie production or commercials.
The Fighter Factory is the aircraft recovery and restoration component of the museum dedicated to the preservation of historical aircraft before they are lost forever. Some aircraft are in the process of restoration and many World War II planes have yet to be discovered! Visit The Military Aviation Museum HERE!

Risk
Humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time. 1 Peter 5:6
When our children were young, one of our favorite board games was Risk. World conquest was the objective. Each player mobilized his troops to take possession of countries and continents. It always amused me that the person who initially was leading the game seldom won. The reason is obvious. When other players sensed his mounting pride, they would join together against him.
Whether consciously or subconsciously, it is easy to dislike powerful people who have proud looks. Their very countenance seems to encourage others to throw obstacles in their paths or to be silent objectors.
In todays Bible reading, we are told that God hates seven things. Tellingly, the first is pride. When someone overvalues himself by undervaluing others, he inevitably reveals it with his proud look. Puffed up in self-conceit, he may also devise evil and sow discord. No wonder God hates proud looks.
Proud and powerful people may think they can disregard others displeasure, but they cannot disregard Gods opposition. Peter reminds us not to trust in ourselves but in the One who will exalt us in due time (1 Peter 5:6). As we submit to Him, we avoid the risk that pride brings to our character and we become thankful, humble servants of God.
Naught have I gotten but what I received;
Grace hath bestowed it since I have believed;
Boasting excluded, pride I abase;
Im only a sinner saved by grace! Gray

Used to live on Woodcock Lane, right next NAS Oceana. I swear those darn pilots used to mark on top of my house for line up to one of the runways. I mean, they were so low I could see the pilots. Used to shake the house. Loved every second of it!!!

The light of God surround you The love of God enfold you The power of God protect you The presence of God watch over you Wherever you are, God is, And all is well. Amen.
BLESS THIS HOUSE Bless this house O Lord we pray; Make it safe by night and day;
Bless these walls so firm and stout, Keeping want and trouble out:
Bless the roof and chimneys tall, Let thy peace lie over all;
Bless this door, that it may prove ever open to joy and love.
Bless these windows shining bright, Letting in God's heav'nly light;
Bless the hearth a'blazing there, with smoke ascending like a prayer;
Bless the folk who dwell within, keep them pure and free from sin;
Bless us all that we may be Fit O Lord to dwell with thee;
Bless us all that one day we May dwell O Lord with thee.
