HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) — Restaurateur Paul Sanford has defeated state Rep. Laura Hall to win a special election for a vacant seat in the Alabama state Senate.

With 56 of 57 precincts reporting, Sanford, a Republican who operates "Little Paul's Barbecue" in Huntsville, had nearly 12,000 votes to about 8,900 for Hall, a Democrat who has represented Huntsville in the House since 1993.

Gov. Bob Riley campaigned for Sanford, and he had the endorsements of the five candidates he defeated in the Republican primary and runoff.

Sanford will replace Huntsville physician Parker Griffith, a Democrat who was elected to the U.S. House in November.

The Democrat margin in the Alabama state senate narrows to a 21-14 margin; however, 2 Dems routinely vote for the GOP, so it’s down to a 19-16 margin.

Parker Griffin has been shut out of the heathcare debate in DC, so he is having to run fraudulent commercials encouraging his constituents to contact him and thank him for his efforts.

Laura Hall is a real piece of work. She claimed that Sanford's responding to her derogatory remarks about him was hurtful to the black community.

Good news; at one time Huntsville was as Democrat as Chicago.

My cousin was one of the five people that ran against Sanford in the primary. Sanford ran a good campaign. He will certainly be an asset.

“he had the endorsements of the five candidates he defeated in the Republican primary and runoff. “

How refreshing! The opposite thing happening costs the GOP seats all the time, with sore losers sometimes even endorsing the rat.

He may be a future Congressional candidate if we don’t dislodge Griffith in ‘10.
