Phila. police make first 'flash mob' arrest By Robert Moran
Inquirer Staff Writer
Philadelphia police yesterday made their first arrest in the beating of a man during a rampage on South Street two weekends ago.
Stephen Lyde, 21, was arrested at his residence on the 5400 block of Sansom Street in West Philadelphia at 11:30 a.m., said Capt. Laurence Nodiff, commanding officer of South Detectives.
Many of the people who went to South and Broad Streets on the evening of May 30 appear to have been responding to text messages and online social networking sites, creating a type of spontaneous gathering known as a "flash mob."
Nodiff said Lyde was not tracked down through the Internet. Detectives expect to make more arrests soon.
The victim, who police say is 54, was riding his bicycle home from his job at the Wistar Institute in University City around 11:30 p.m. when he was confronted by eight males at Broad and South, Nodiff said.
"They brutally and viciously beat him to the ground, to unconsciousness," Nodiff said.
The victim was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital in critical condition with brain swelling, a skull fracture, facial and rib fractures, and internal injuries, Nodiff said. He remained in the hospital yesterday.

Flash mobs used to be "performance art" with a couple hundred artsy-fartsy types showing up in a hotel lobby or somewhere and clapping for a minute and then dispersing.
When I read about this "flash mob" engaging in looting and assault, I was pretty sure they weren't the same artsy-fartsy hand clappers. And when I saw the footage, it only confirmed what I already knew.

I would bet top dollar that the “social newworking site” is nothing but a racial hate site begging for a lawsuit.
If it was any site, it was most likely myspace which has pretty much turned into "thugspace" though it's probably nothing more than text messaging. Most of these street thugs don't possess an IQ capable of navigating past myspace on the internet.
No doubt. Not to mention they've probably posted all the incriminating cell phone camera footage on their myspace pages.
These thugs are hardly criminal masterminds. Possessing IQs of about 75, they're pretty easy to catch as they act impulsively and generally don't put much thought into getting away with it. That these moronic losers were capable of planning a "flash mob" is impressive. Maybe they're evolving?
Cell phone records will not only show you as having sent or received a "flash mob" text message, but also where you were (or at least what the nearest cell tower was) when you sent or received a message or phone call.

In a sane world lawyers should be lining up to represent the victim, and the first thing they should do is to file suit against the internet site that allowed itself to be MauMau central. I tried to go there but its a login site and I was not going to have anything to do with that.

incidentally, I've lived in just about every neighborhood referenced in the article and remember when this happened - never estimate the power of stupidity in large groups - ESPECIALLY when the kiddies think they're anonymous.
