Another woman shot herself at a Central Florida gun range Saturday in a suicide attempt, authorities said.

The woman rented a handgun and filled out paperwork indicating she had no mental-health problems, wasn't on drugs and had no other conditions or situations to preclude her from shooting safely, said John Ritz, manager of the east Orange County range. Like other customers, she also was read the safety rules.

The shooting happened about 12:30 p.m. at East Orange Shooting Sports on Gardner Street, east of Winter Park. There was a suicide there several years ago.

He really meant it.

It wasn't an overdose with a call to the poison control center to schedule a rescue. It's pretty tacky to bang on the glass to get the folks in the lobby to pay attention to you before blowing your head off. What other people thought of his action didn't much matter to him.

I mentioned my membership at the range because I was there 4 or 5 days each week. Frankly, I'm happy I wasn't present when it occurred.

There was a policy change at my range in San Diego after the shotgun incident. They no longer allowed a new customer to shoot alone until they had a good history. It took two suicides to prompt that change. It had no impact on the existing long term customers.

She should have taken some practice shots first.

There’s a three day waiting period on handguns in Fl unless you have a concealed carry permit. No “safety test”. Rifles or shotguns you can buy on the spot.

It happened 3 times at Shoot Straight (same town). No more rentals until the state allows background checks on rental customers.

Perhaps a special annex should be constructed exclusively for those who wish to off themselves.
