The son of Iran's late shah said Monday he saw echoes of the 1979 Islamic Revolution that overthrew his father as massive crowds took to the streets against the disputed re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Das Mullahas control whatever the show they are pulling, however it would be nice to see original democracy nation gets back some form of freedom, not a dynasty of hacks we enjoy in west.

He’s right, but his dad wasn’t willing to gun down the Iranian populace to maintain control. Jimma may get to see how wrong he was about the Shah in upcoming days.

The Shah was not perfect by a long shot, but as Middle-Eastern nations go, he certainly wasn’t the worst character around.

Carter, and now Obama both treated our allies like dirt. It’s deja vu all over again.

The only difference this time is that the ‘leader’ of Iran isn’t getting backstabbed by the scumbag Jimmy Carter as the Shah was in ‘79.

It’s all street theatre, Ahmadinnerjacket will still be in power at the end of this year, unless the mullahs can find someone who is better able to serve their ends.

"...it would be nice to see original democracy nation gets back some form of freedom..."

Indeed it would be...don't hold your breath however, the people must first over throw the present Theocracy that governs them...they have truly want to take the hits to bring back a free country. People in the US are similar in some respects, i.e. Obama's latest act in defiance of the Constitution, firing the Inspector General without telling congress or giving a reason....

...and his insistence that his health care plan be done immediately is cause for real concern to all. America, we have been the Obama Hurry-Up-Road before so don't fall for his Bait & Switch health plans...the real agenda here is to remove one more Capitalist stumbling block for Obama, the Insurance companies...free enterprise the American way...not the Obama power grab.

Agreed he even made the Shahs military stand aside and not shoot the Mad Man Khomeini's aircraft down. That wimp is responsible for tens of thousands of deaths ever since leading right up to 9/11.

Yes, I agree. He destabilized that region, and we’ve paid for it for over thirty years. Millions have died as a direct result of Carter’s actions.

Hell, the left is infamous for this. Look at the aftermath of Vietnam, the millions who died in Cambodia and Vietnam as a result of the leftists demanding we leave there with our tail between our legs.

It remains to be seen how much it will cost us due to Carter facilitating cover for North Korea to develop nuclear weapons.

I was there in Tehran as well during the revolution in 1979. The lead up to the revolution included mass demonstrations, shouting from the roof tops, strikes, power cut offs, etc. The Iranian Revolution was a coalition of forces including the students, bazaaries, intelligentsia including exiles, and the mullahs. They eventually took the Shah down with help from Carter and Vance who convinced the Shah not to use Savak to eliminate the opposition.

The mullahs hijacked the Revolution. It is going to be very difficult this time to overthrow the regime since the mullahs and the poor, their power base, will be difficult to overcome, especially since the mullahs have no compunction on the use of force to keep themselves in power.

I’m not quite sure yet what the ramifications of that will be. Now that they are enlarging the facilities, it may be much more of a threat. The Chi-Coms are running the place from what I understand, so it could turn out ugly there too in time.

I wouldn’t like China to have full access to the Caribbean with it’s military ships, as they become more of a threat.

I don’t know everything there was to know about the Shah, but he was a friend of the West. His nation was quite open during the Shah’s rule. Christians were treated well. The women in the nation had far more rights.

Look what happened after Carter screwed it up. And yet Carter still thinks he was a gifted world class negotiator.

He was a dunce.

Thanks for your reply. You should know better than I about the Shah though.

I saw what the Shah had in vision for his country. The allowing of women to wear their hair uncovered, girl scouts, hospitals, real highways and the ability to kick Iraq's ass in 3 days. I was a contractor in Iran supporting the Shah's IIAF F-14 program. Lost many friends and acquaintances during the revolution due to their loyalty to the Shah and their subsequent executions.

I left Iran on March 31, 2009. I remember martial law, the return of Khomeini to Iran, and the takeover of our Embassy on February 14, 1979. Khomeini and the mullahs seized the levers of power killing off the opposition, including their fellow revolutionaries.

Nassiri was imprisoned in late 1978 and was executed on February 16 by a firing squad. Khomeini entered Iran on February 1.

As I recall the tale is went something like Carter solicited a bribe from the shah. He wanted some of his GA buddies to get a kick back on some const. jobs in Iran. The Shah said no and Carter got the CIA to undermine the Shah's regime.
If all that is true Carter once again wins the prize for the worst ever potus, with the possible exception of the present holder.

I’m very sorry to hear that. I understand what you’re talking about.

That was before Iran started to look weak in the eyes of Hussein, who eventually attacked.

Carter had us in a position at that point, where we couldn’t win no matter what we did. If Iran or Iraq won, either could have dominated the Middle-East, and we certainly didn’t want a strong anti-US Islamic government doing that.

Then the left faulted us for trying to make the war end in a dead heat. They destabilize, then blame us for trying to deal with things so that the worst case scenario won’t take place.

The Vietnam/Iranian/Iraqi/Afghanistan/Pakistan/Israeli problem with allies, is who can trust us if we continue to sell folks out? Right now Obama is bringing that to the European theater as well, dissing our allies there too.

I honestly think the Europeans must be gasping for breath, perhaps realizing their dreams of a neutered U.S. just might come true. Then who will defend them while they nip at their heels?

Europe is in big trouble if Obama take measures to strengthen the Middle-East trouble makers. And it looks as if he may just do that.

I can’t speak to that, but Carter’s big thing was that he wasn’t going to play ball with dictators. He was only going to associate with enlightened leaders. No, seriously! He was a pie eyed eight year old school girl, going to turn things around, make up for all the evil prior administrations had done. Sound familiar?

He undercut the Shah, and something a hundred times worse cropped up in his place. Now Obama is undercutting many people, and something much worse will crop up in their place.

Guys like Carter and Obama are extremely dangerous. They don’t have a clue, and when they have worked their magic, the people who have to clean it up get all the blame.

Obama thinks Israel is evil. He thinks European nations are evil. If it’s white, it’s suspect. No good can come of this.

Our allies form Bermuda to where ever, are going to be paying the price for his terrorist relocation demands.

Good nations will either pay heavily, or actually fall to insurgencies brought about by these people.

There is no doubt that the Shah placed women in power in his cabinet and there were more women in the Iranian parliament than were in the US Congress. However, the Shah's "Western ways," contributed to his downfall as many fundamentalists were against these liberalizations. And the Shah's White Revolution angered the mullahs because it took away some of their lands and gave women the right to vote.

That said, the Shah was no saint. There was widespread corruption and much of the oil wealth was not shared with the people. And Savak's brutality was well-known. Still, Iran was far better off under the Shah than the mullahs. And US interests were better served with the Shah in power than Khomeini who began the modern militant Islamic fundamentalist movement and created the world's biggest state sponsor of terrorism. We are reaping the results now from one of the biggest foreign policy blunders in our history. Jimmy Carter was a disaster.

I honestly think he’s been a big help there.

People may be deaf, blind, and dumb, but at some point something is going to register, and wake them up.

If it doesn’t, the nation was done for anyway.

Seeing evil personified, will either wake people up so that we have a new lease on life, or it will get this over with quickly.

Perhaps that’s to fatalistic, but it’s how I see it.

I don't recall any bribes being offered to Carter. There were plenty of US contractors in Iran. In 1978 there were over 70,000 Americans in Iran doing business. I have no doubt that Carter may have tried to push some GA firms for business dealings in Iran. Lots of money was flowing in Iran flush with oil money.

What prompted Carter's actions had more to do with his human rights policy than any offer of bribes. If you recall, we had thousands of Iranian students in the US demonstrating in front of the WH with bags over their heads calling for the removal of the Shah and more human rights in Iran. At the time, there were over 50,000 Iranian students in the US, more than any other country in the world.

Carter believed that human rights should be the most important factor driving our foreign policy. He dismissed "real politic" as being unreprsentative of this country even if our national interests were at stake. In a word, Carter was dangerously naive.

The stakes in Iran were high. Iran was a major ally in the region. It had oil, lots of opportunties for American businesses and for the sale of American weapons. The Shah was pro-American. There was even an Israeli trade mission in Tehran. We had over 1,000 official Americans in Iran in 1978, including those along the Caspian monitoring Soviet nuclear tests. Iran was critical to US national interests, but Carter was so involved in the Camp David Peace Accords that he wasn't paying attention to what was happening in Iran.

Carter and Vance believed that they could ease the Shah out and deal with the new democratic government that replaced him. They did not understand the power of the mullahs and their ability to hijack the Revolution. So the unintended consequence was clearing the way for Khomeini to take power. And human rights under Khomeini and subsequently are far worse than under the Shah. And the cruelest cut of all has been Iran's initiation and funding of militant Islamic fundamentalism around the globe, which has killed many Americans. A nuclear armed Iran presents a real danger for the region and us.

Our policy should be regime change. Instead, Obama has been legitimizing the current regime by offering to deal with it. Obama now has a golden opportunity to send a signal to the Iranian opposition that we support their struggle. I doubt he will do that preferring to negotiate with the current regime.

huh? Saddam treated people equal?

Saddam got rid of Sharia law and secularized Iraq, giving women rights they didn't have in any other Persian Gulf country. One of the reasons the U.S. supported Saddam during the 1980s was because he stood against the threat of radical Islam. That's why there wasn't much difference between Iraq under Saddam and Iran under the Shah--each developed a Westernized society while security forces kept order by torturing and killing internal political opponents.
