McCartney and Yoko push 'meat-free Mondays'

LONDON (AFP) — Beatles legend and famous vegetarian Paul McCartney was joined by John Lennon's widow Yoko Ono Monday to launch an appeal for "meat-free Mondays."

McCartney said going vegetarian, even for just one day a week, was good for the environment because of research suggesting it cuts greenhouse gas emissions from the world's livestock population.

"I thought this was a great idea. To just reduce your meat intake maybe by one day a week and this would seriously benefit the planet," he told reporters, alongside Ono and a bevy of other stars including Kelly Osbourne and Moby.

Lennon's widow -- famously blamed for splitting up the Beatles, but clearly reconciled and on good terms with McCartney now -- added: "Give up one day and then it will be two days maybe. It's a very, very intelligent idea."

In a video on his website, McCartney noted that the campaign had already been launched in the United States and Australia.

"It?s kind of easy to do. You?ve had too much over the weekend anyway and you?re all running down to the gym to try and work it off so just have a meat-free Monday," he said.

“meat-free Mondays.”

HA! Got that beat. The Peoples Republic of Portland(Oregon) in their Climate Action Plan is calling for a 20% reduction in red meat...thats 1.2 more meatless meals than what these stars are calling for.

I had my veggies last night. Zucchini, dredged in flour and seasonings, and deep-fried. Went great with the bacon, cream cheese, and chive-stuffed chicken breast beside it. I haven't given up my meat yet, and I ain't doing it for these two stinky old hippies. Maybe when the option of cannibalism becomes a real existential necessity, will I look at that watercress a little differently.

I’d be for meat-free Mondays if we can have sanctimonious-free Tuesdays.

They are wasting their time.

By the end of 2009 most Americans won't be able to afford to have meat on the family menu anyway.

MM,

LOL- They are just testing their control over their blind, devoted fans!!

(of which I am NOT one...at least not one of the blind fanatics)

Look - I do LOVE some of the Beatles’ music... (SOME of it!)... but where does Paul get off, thinking he can tell people not to eat a hot dog or a burger if they wish!

This food chain thing was planned by a higher authority than Paul McCartney- or that other little weird one!!

Rediculous people!!

When I was a kid, there was a movement with meatless Fridays. It was called the Catholic Church.

I can't verify this, and it could just be conjecture or rumor, but supposedly when McCartney played Madison Square Garden in 2005 he tried to stipulate that there would not be any meat products sold at the concession stands during his concerts there .... and the MSG concession ppl told Paulie to go pound sand. And off a short pier ... LOL

That is why what they want is so absurd. Their logic is as whacked as their brains.

MM,

Yep, have heard that story too!

It’s so silly if anyone would stop and think about it!!
(this no meat eating idea)

What plans would they have for all these animals that-IMO-were part of the major plan to feed the people of the world!

It’s all planned and balanced out...and NOT by a mere Rock Star!! ;)

She killed his band, killed his partner, and now he's shacking up with her? Wasn't the one-legged disaster enough for Macca?
