Foreign Affairs Minister Avigdor Lieberman will conduct a series of political talks in Washington with senior government officials, including discussions with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Wednesday. The talks come three days after Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu announced that he would support a demilitarized Palestinian Authority state. Netanyahus speech was well-received by the American administration.
Lieberman, who landed in the U.S. capital on Monday, will continue his political campaign that he started in Europe. In Luxemburg, he met with European Union ministers, who labeled Netanyahu's speech on Sunday as insufficient. Lieberman is a tough cookie. I wonder if she’ll call him an FJB by the end of their talks.
Avigdor Lieberman has a very passable English. In his English interviews, he comes through as a soft-spoken, reasonable guy. In his official position, there is no flame throwing rhetoric. But his no nonsense background made him already a better understood (from the point of view of his Arab counterparts) negotiator then Livni and a good number of previous FMs and other Israeli officials. He does not need to *prove* his toughness, like they did. Not that he will be liked by them (ha!), but respected - that’s for sure.
The best they can hope for is pleasant lies of support.
What a thrill that must have been for him.
Netanyahu's speech was well received by the American administration.
Where did this writer get that from? Netanyahu's speech could be considered a (somewhat nuanced) point by point rebuttal of Obama's Cairo speech.
Another FR post from an Israeli source claimed that a high ranking American official had criticized Netanyahu after reviewing an advance copy of his speech. Then George Mitchell - of all people - was dispatched to lecture Netanyahu about it.
Thanks for the ping!
