Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) didn't like a Brigadier General calling her "ma'am" at an EPW hearing yesterday.
"Do me a favor," she said, "could say 'senator' instead of 'ma'am?' It's just a thing, I worked so hard to get that title, so I'd appreciate it, yes, thank you."

It's not generic in the military, it's a proper alternative to rank when addressing superior officers. While not "proper" in the sense that Barbara isn't his superior, it was clearly a mark of respect. Which she clearly demonstrated she doesn't deserve.

He's leading off in the second game, and as he walks up to the plate, he asks the umpie if he can be tossed out for "thinking". I think the General should honor her request. After all, MS. Boxer was instrumental in causing the title “Senator” to be fraught with dishonorable, disgusting, disrespecful and fraudulent connotations. I think the General should honor her wishes and call her by the caustic, disrespectful slur of a title that she wishes to go by: Senator
It is really too bad. At one time that title caused me to view someone with honor, respect and deference. Sadly, those days are long since past.
I figure as long as she calls him “General”, they are even.
BTW, I had an internship with Sen. Pete Wilson (long, long, ago) and his title on correspondence was “Hon. Pete Wilson”. Although not every Member of Congress is honorable, I figure we should keep using the title to remind them of what they should be.
