The Senate unanimously passed a resolution yesterday apologizing for slavery, making way for a joint congressional resolution and the latest attempt by the federal government to take responsibility for 2 1/2 centuries of slavery.
"You wonder why we didn't do it 100 years ago," Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), lead sponsor of the resolution, said after the unanimous-consent vote. "It is important to have a collective response to a collective injustice."
The Senate's apology follows a similar apology passed last year by the House. One key difference is that the Senate version explicitly deals with the long-simmering issue of whether slavery descendants are entitled to reparations, saying that the resolution cannot be used in support of claims for restitution. The House is expected to revisit the issue next week to conform its resolution to the Senate version.

Now when does Rome apologize for the gladitorial games and all that lion-feeding they did with Christians?
An apology??? hmmmm, are we being set up for more $$$$$ donations to the minority community ?
Oh, I guess they would be better off in Africa and were not brought to this great land. Read the story of “Joseph” in Genesis....did he cry when he was sold into slavery and ended up being second in command in Egypt? He could have complained and got no where....but he did not and became second in command. Get the point?
Yep! Money is the end game, count on it!
And, I agree that all “debts” were paid, by the Civil War, still the bloodiest tragedy ever to befall this great country.
Democrats still practice the ancient tradition of father’s sin becomes the son’s sin
If the Democrats pass any legislation giving cash reparations to blacks as payment for slavery that will result in the immediate death of the Democratic Party.
This is a set up for reparations. Maybe we should do it to finally to shut off the debate give each former slave $1,000,000,000.
Yet another trillion welfare/alimonious fraud or some slave commune of which this congress critter belongs to.
TJust as they blame their parents for not aborting them, they are blaming the liberators.
Absolutely- reparations have been talked about for years.
What about the 618,000 American soldiers (Union and Confed) who died in that little tiff (battle death, disease, etc) called the Civil War? Wasn’t that fought mostly over the slavery issue?
Does that count for nothing?
Apologies over slavery were not an issue because of the obvious violence of the war. 360,000 Union soldiers died in the struggle to free those slaves. An apology seems redundant when one considers that...
Joseph understoood that it was God’s will that he would be sold into slavery by his brothers. He carried no grudge against his brothers, for it was God’s plan that Joseph would rise to power in Eygpt after years of slavery and prison.
This plan will never work. Because when you expect something from others, your worth is lower than you think.
A proper slavery reparation would be to arm every citizen with a howitzer targetting DC.
Now that would be real repair and not some of the bull crap you hear everyday.
Populism = mobocracy. We need to repeal the 17th Amend.
Harkin needs to pay attention to the water bill that Russ Feingold is trying to force thru Congress instead of worrying about slavery.
Iowa will be a dust bowl if Feingold gets this passes. Iowa’s farmers won’t be happy if Harkin does NOT fight this bill==S 787.
I always get a laugh out of the whole “your ancestors benefited from slavery and Jim Crow” talking point... even though my parents did not move to the USA (from Africa) until 1972.
Maybe we should do it to finally to shut off the debate give each former slave $1,000,000,000.”
Do you expect to issue Zimbabwe dollars for this payment?
“If the Democrats pass any legislation giving cash reparations to blacks as payment for slavery that will result in the immediate death of the Democratic Party.”
For that reason and that reason only, I wish they WOULD push for it. The backlash would be beautiful!
I remember watching a sci-fi show of a parrallel world of former slavemaster children’s become slaves to the former slaves’s children. They have to repay the damage their parents did to former slaves parents. This goes on for many generations
There is still slavery in the Sudan. Black on black slavery. If these black people really cared about the issue of slavery they would want to end what is going on in the Sudan. Apparently an apology to them is worth more than the enslavement of fellow black people.
An apology??? hmmmm, are we being set up for more $$$$$ donations to the minority community ?

I hope so. They need the money to pay me for invading Portugal years ago.
To be blunt, if the black community ever wants to achieve true equality, then a very big first step would be to stop portraying themselves as victims.
Personally, if I was on the losing end of a war and had the option of living as a slave or being executed on the spot, I'd have chosen life. I understand that some, possibly many would choose death, but is it really more humane to outlaw slavery than to remove the hope of the defeated to at least continue to live, even as slaves?
No surprise that Harkin, the Vietnam fighter Pilot Liar, is in the middle of this farce.
Because back in 1861 we apologized for it at a cost of more lives lost than all other wars fought by this country before or since. Hows that for an apology Senator Harkin?
If the Democrats pass any legislation giving cash reparations to blacks as payment for slavery that will result in the immediate death of the Democratic Party.
I'd be all for that, every 150 year old ex slave line up at the White House and have Barry write them out a check.
I have nothing to apologize for.
Good grief. This crap will never end.
The apology would have been more historically accurate if it had mentioned the role of the Democratic Party in supporting and enforcing both slavery and segregation.
Send the reparations bill to the DNC.
“Democrats still practice the ancient tradition of fathers sin becomes the sons sin”
Not exactly. You see, the Democrats were the party that supported both slavery and Jim Crow.
Actually...the Constitution prevents Congress passing crimes through bloodlines.
Of course, now that we have a wise Latina woman on the Court I can see reparations being upheld 5-4.
My ancestors fought to free the slaves. I’m holding out for a ‘thank you’ from the slaves descendants...
Frankly, I think the only apology needed was given during the Civil War.
So the majority of the country descended from immigrants who came here after the Civil War have to apologize for something they nor their ancestors had a part of?
The current Dems are total buffoons...of course we all here know that.
“....My ancestors fought to free the slaves. Im holding out for a thank you from the slaves descendants...”
Exactly!!! Hundreds of thousands of White males gave their lives for these “slaves”.....your welcome!
The apology tour continues and it ain’t about principal it’s only about MONEY!
Did Senator Byrd apologize for being a Kleagle in the KKK and opposing the Civil Rights Act of 1964? Seems to me the Democrat Party should be the one’s apologizing, since they not only fought to keep slavery but fought to keep segregation as well.
The Roman Empire was built and maintained on the backs of slaves.
Not only was it largely Muslims capturing and selling the Africans to white slave traders back in the day, some Islamic countries condone slavery today.
Where's the righteous indignation over that fact?
It was as British colonies that slavery was established on the U.S. continent. It was widely recognized as a blight in need of addressing at the time the colonies struck out as an independent nation, but was seen by many who were far wiser than any liberal in government today as a problem that needed to wait until the nation was at least on it's feet as an actual entity before addressing completely overhauling it's economic infrastructure.
And as an aside, as slavery goes in history, those in the American colonies and the first decades of the United States did not have it so bad in terms of treatment. I know that's an affront to argue this to someone stuck subject to the whims of another human being who "owns" you, but since "relative" morality is in vogue today, it's worth keeping in mind.
And no black born in this nation alive today has ever personally experienced being owned by another human being, any more than I have.
Should Egyptian Muslims be allowed to sue for reparations for having their lives, culture and freedom stolen from them when Islam invaded, along with every other nation Muslims like to pretend were always dominated by that oppressive cult? Their claim would be at least as legitimate as African Americans'. Maybe more legitimate since they're still subject to a system that, through censorship, oppression and lies, keeps them virtual slaves to this day.
Maybe "moveon.org" will apply the same logic it used when it was founded to help get the nation to move on past the fact that we had a scum bag doing scummy things in the oval office, and say "come on, don't we have enough to deal with on today's problem?"
Or maybe Congress' time would be more nobly spent addressing the fact that the human flesh industry (slavery of all sorts, from labor to sex) is the single largest industry in our pseudo-enlightened, "Progressive" world today?
Nah, that makes too much sense.

Cheer up folks. It’s time to celebrate!
God Bless Texas!
It will come to reparations no matter what the final bill says and when it does, I hope someone insists that in order to qualify, their lineage must be documented back to a slave. Also, once the amount to be awarded is determined, from that they subtract the cost of welfare, affirmative action, the Watts(, Detroit, Newark, et al) riots, gang violence, etc. When the final figure is tabulated, it should be adjusted for the economic conditions in Africa today that they would be living (possibly) under today had their ancesters been allowed to remain in Africa.
I guess the trillions stolen by Big Brother and redistributed as welfare don’t count.
