Senate Backs Apology for Slavery
Washington Post ^ | 6/20/2009 | Krissah Thompson

Posted on 06/19/2009 6:19:13 AM PDT by mikelets456

The Senate unanimously passed a resolution yesterday apologizing for slavery, making way for a joint congressional resolution and the latest attempt by the federal government to take responsibility for 2 1/2 centuries of slavery.

"You wonder why we didn't do it 100 years ago," Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), lead sponsor of the resolution, said after the unanimous-consent vote. "It is important to have a collective response to a collective injustice."

The Senate's apology follows a similar apology passed last year by the House. One key difference is that the Senate version explicitly deals with the long-simmering issue of whether slavery descendants are entitled to reparations, saying that the resolution cannot be used in support of claims for restitution. The House is expected to revisit the issue next week to conform its resolution to the Senate version.

Sorry, but this is ridiculous. How many times does there need to be an apology. Why don't the Muslims apologize for killing 90% of the slaves they took on. Don't people realize the Muslims started black slavery? Don't the Blacks realize the white Christian male died to fight for them...wasn't that enough? Also, blacks had black slaves...how will that work? This is total BS!

Oh, I guess they would be better off in Africa and were not brought to this great land. Read the story of “Joseph” in Genesis....did he cry when he was sold into slavery and ended up being second in command in Egypt? He could have complained and got no where....but he did not and became second in command. Get the point?

Yep! Money is the end game, count on it!

And, I agree that all “debts” were paid, by the Civil War, still the bloodiest tragedy ever to befall this great country.

Democrats still practice the ancient tradition of father’s sin becomes the son’s sin

If the Democrats pass any legislation giving cash reparations to blacks as payment for slavery that will result in the immediate death of the Democratic Party.

This is a set up for reparations. Maybe we should do it to finally to shut off the debate give each former slave $1,000,000,000.

Yet another trillion welfare/alimonious fraud or some slave commune of which this congress critter belongs to.

TJust as they blame their parents for not aborting them, they are blaming the liberators.

Absolutely- reparations have been talked about for years.

What about the 618,000 American soldiers (Union and Confed) who died in that little tiff (battle death, disease, etc) called the Civil War? Wasn’t that fought mostly over the slavery issue?

Does that count for nothing?

Apologies over slavery were not an issue because of the obvious violence of the war. 360,000 Union soldiers died in the struggle to free those slaves. An apology seems redundant when one considers that...

Joseph understoood that it was God’s will that he would be sold into slavery by his brothers. He carried no grudge against his brothers, for it was God’s plan that Joseph would rise to power in Eygpt after years of slavery and prison.

This plan will never work. Because when you expect something from others, your worth is lower than you think.

A proper slavery reparation would be to arm every citizen with a howitzer targetting DC.

Now that would be real repair and not some of the bull crap you hear everyday.

Harkin needs to pay attention to the water bill that Russ Feingold is trying to force thru Congress instead of worrying about slavery.

Iowa will be a dust bowl if Feingold gets this passes. Iowa’s farmers won’t be happy if Harkin does NOT fight this bill==S 787.

I always get a laugh out of the whole “your ancestors benefited from slavery and Jim Crow” talking point... even though my parents did not move to the USA (from Africa) until 1972.

Do you expect to issue Zimbabwe dollars for this payment?

“If the Democrats pass any legislation giving cash reparations to blacks as payment for slavery that will result in the immediate death of the Democratic Party.”

For that reason and that reason only, I wish they WOULD push for it. The backlash would be beautiful!

I remember watching a sci-fi show of a parrallel world of former slavemaster children’s become slaves to the former slaves’s children. They have to repay the damage their parents did to former slaves parents. This goes on for many generations
