Iranian reformist Mir Hossein Mousavi was given an ultimatum by the Islamic Republic's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a call to support the reelected regime of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the London Times reported Friday morning.
Khamenei made it clear to Mousavi that if he failed to report to Friday prayers at Teheran University, during which he planned to deliver a sermon calling for national unity, the oppostion leader would be exiled.
Khamenei is expected to be assisted by "an army of Islamic volunteer militiamen" during the sermon.
According the report, Khamenei made the demand while meeting with the representatives of candidates of the national elections that Mousavi had claimed were rigged.

And by Sunday, we'll know who won.

The basij will win, sadly. Protesters are already being rounded up and imprisoned, as are journalists.
Crackdown in Iran as anger rages over vote
When we stopped, an officer grabbed me, pinned my arm behind my back and led me into the bowels of the Interior Ministry headquarters - where so many Iranian dissidents ‘disappear’ Mistaken for a protester in Tehran, Globe freelancer George McLeod was captured and beaten by riot police. This is his story.

Exiling Mousavi would be a huge mistake by the ayatollahs. It would create a ligitimate international voice for dissent outside of Iran and would be a magnet for the media. They would create an Emmanuel Goldstein, untouchable, outside of their grasp.
If they were smart they would do everything to mollify him.
What did anyone expect?
Twitter, Facebook, and Youtube are not weapons, They are toys so that kids in the west could feel like they are part of the “revolution”. It was pretty stupid to think that those things, along with slogans, chanting, and poster were actually going to take down a dictatorship.
Other than the former E. Bloc, whose governments were Communist mostly because they were propped up by Russia, and thus were toppled peacefully for the large part when the USSR could no longer hold them, totalitarian regimes only go down when the people shoot back.
And unfortunately the regime has all the guns.
” It was pretty stupid to think that those things, along with slogans, chanting, and posters were actually going to take down a dictatorship.”
Almost like the tea party’s will be unless ..............
Indeed. Waving signs and yelling slogans is one way to get the message across - but it does not enforce compliance. Tea party participants take note.
bttt
Wouldn’t be the first time an Iranian government got toppled by someone in exile.
Be careful what you wish for.
Time for some popcorn. The Iran-Iraq war was very entertaining too.
How many votes did the Supreme Leader get?
....Or Iranian rednecks on steriods.
....Or as a warning?

I remember there was an Ayatollah that was exiled once.
Didn’t exiling the Mullah to France give HIM an open platform to establish his ability to return to IRAN and overthrow the Shah?
