House Passes Bipartisan Resolution to Support Iranian Dissidents, 405 to 1

Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.) and Rep. Howard Berman (D-Calif.) introduced the following resolution:

Expressing support for all Iranian citizens who embrace the values of freedom, human rights, civil liberties, and rule of law, and for other purposes.

Resolved, That the House of Representatives—

(1) expresses its support for all Iranian citizens who embrace the values of freedom, human rights, civil liberties, and rule of law;

(2) condemns the ongoing violence against demonstrators by the Government of Iran and pro-government militias, as well as the ongoing government suppression of independent electronic communication through interference with the Internet and cellphones; and

(3) affirms the universality of individual rights and the importance of democratic and fair elections.

The House just voted to pass it by an overwhelming margin 405 to 1. Ron Paul was the lone "no" vote, with two voting present and 25 not voting.

And now people know why Ron Paul will never be president, no matter how many people decide to support him.

Oh yeah....but Dr. Paul is for the Constitution, and you are a neocon, RINO, or traitor depending on which I used last.

I don’t know why the I ranians are throwing such a fit. Mousavi is probably just as much under the control of the mullahs as Mahmoud Iminthemoodforjihad. And besides, Iranian elections are none of our Congress’ business, especially when most of them got elected by voter fraud.

I suspect his reasoning is that he does not want to encourage the opposition with a meaningless gesture, knowing that the USA will do absolutely nothing to help them. The Hungarians were misled by Dwight D. Eisenhower into thinking he would have helped them in 1956. The American people always approve feel-good resolutions.

Because when people cast a vote they would like to think it counts for something.

Ron Paul votes against ALL non-binding resolutions. He considers them a waste of time/money.

I figure it had to do with the lack of pork for his district...

Surely the Iranian people are aware that even if Mousavi had won in a landslide, he’d still just be a mouthpiece for the Grand Ayatollah.

John McCain doesn’t earmark “pork” for his constituents, therefore, he must be a shining example of conservatism at its best.

I guess to Ron Paul democracy just isn’t the gold standard.

Maybe so, but I wonder... if there were those like RP in France, when WE needed their support and help in our revolution against the British ... we might still BE under British rule.

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.... and then along comes Bill Clinton.

Of course not. Democracy is tyranny of the masses. Which is why we are a constitutional republic. Or, at least, used to be.

France was an absolute monarchy at the time. Their aid to us wasn’t so much as sympathy to our cause than just trying to stick it to the British. Except the Marquis de Lafayette, he was an enlightened guy.

I completely agree. But a vote for Mousavi was a vote against Ahmadinejad. Even though from our perspective, there is very little difference between them the Iranian people are entitled to their own choice.

In the end we are probably better served with Ahmadinejad. If Mousavi had gotten into office, the Obama regime would argue that it was their ‘smart’ diplomacy that had won the day. As it is we will hear the same, or even worse, demagoguery, making the case to the rest of the world, if not to Obama, that Iran is ruled by fanatics.
