The Narcissist in Chief

Telegraph reporter Stephanie Gutmann describes her reaction to Barack Obama’s appearance in Berlin: “After it was over I picked up the phone and called a friend back home. ‘It’s worse than we thought,’ I told him. ‘The guy’s actually crazy.’”

Guttman was talking about candidate Obama’s agenda as he presented it that day, in which he promised to take on the terrorists in Afghanistan, take on the drug dealers, rebuild Afghanistan, eliminate the building nuclear threat, secure all loose nukes, decrease arsenals from another era, form a new global partnership that will end terror networks, redistribute wealth, save the planet, withdraw all troops from Iraq, keep the oceans from rising, end famine, and reduce carbon output. Most politicians would have quit after two or three such ambitious proposals.

Incredibly, there are Obamanutz among us who honestly don’t realize that Barack Obama is a narcissist of the worst kind.

"Dr. Charles Krauthammer, a very respectable psychiatrist, has also noted that Obama is a narcissist."

This man is so in love with himself I am surprised there is room for michelle or his children. My gosh...he could teach clinton!

Indeed -- and, a scary thought, too! Just as Obama could teach Clinton, so Michelle could teach Hillary. I feel sorry for their girls. Their lives will be very difficult unless there is someone for them who can actually give them love and show them approval. To a pathological narcissist, those around them are not human; they are things to be manipulated for the narcissist's pleasure. Children are possessions to be displayed and to bring praise and pride to the narcissist.

Uh, time to get off my soapbox.

Let’s not forget the opportunity that this presents us. Narcissists are horrible to deal with, esp. If they have power over you.(Cf abusive relationships). That said, if you recognize that you are dealing with a narcissist early enough, they can be easily manipulated. One of the best techniques is to turn them against their allies until they are alone or weak. To that end, we should push each and every time the donks and his sychophants cross zero so he blames THEM for his loss of ego-boosting adoration. Any people with connections to talk radio lurking? Do that, and zero will burn his own allies until he is alone and politically vulnerable.

Nice strategy!

I was watching a History Channel program about all the WORST Roman Emperors. Every one of them reminded me of Zero. Deranged narcissists...all of whom made enemies everywhere and were either murdered (by those close to them) or committed sucide.

Next to Obama, Clinton seems almost normal.

Um, that’s part of narcissistic personality disorder, a key part actually.

Yet, isn't that a main part of narcissism?

No, no, and no. Having been married to a way out there narcissist for 10 years, and studying the disorder extensively to understand what I was dealing with, I agree with the items listed in the article as symptoms and characteristics of narcissism. Thinking one is special is one factor. But the primary and destructive thing is the lack of empathy; not really giving a damn about anybody near you, or anybody at all when you get down to it. How does a life of believing ridiculous leftist bromides, and not having the wisdom to see how stupid that is, make one a narcissist? Do you get the impression he really doesn't care for his family? I haven't seen it. Being a fool and being a narcissist are two things, not necessarily related.

"his inability to see that everything he knows isn’t so."

A narcissist believes he can NEVER be wrong. Grandiose. Never admits he's wrong. A self that is SO fragile, that admitting being wrong is to destroy the entire illusion of self.

How does a life of believing ridiculous leftist bromides, and not having the wisdom to see how stupid that is, make one a narcissist?

This is what he was taught from childhood from the people he had to please to exist. Crazy mother. Crazy father/mentor, Frank(?) whats-his-name. Nutso leftist grandparents. The people on whom the child depended for his survival.

These are also the tenants that give him the narcissistic supply he desires. The screaming masses that praise him when he repeats the socialist tripe. He may truly believe in the rhetoric he spews, then again he may not even care. The desired effect is the admiration, the power, the narcissistic supply of those around him who look up to him, fawn over him, and seek his presence.

Do you get the impression he really doesn't care for his family?

Yes. As the child of a narcissist, I do. I see it in him and his wife. I fear for his children. Fear, as in I know the road they'll walk. To him, they are things. Props to make him look better. I don't say this lightly. I don't say this with pleasure. This isn't projection. I don't see this in every person who disagrees with me, or every political candidate whose views are different from mine. I *do* see it in Barack Obama. Strongly. It's creepy.

Being a fool and being a narcissist are two things, not necessarily related.

I agree completely. Barack Obama is a pathological narcissist, not a fool.

He is brilliant. And has the ability to translate his thoughts into terms we can all absorb.

He's also unencumbered by having the moral character to try and tell the truth about anything. There are a zillion examples, but when he introduced the new CAFE standards, he claimed the new cars would cost $1300 more, but we'd make it up at the pump. He has no clue what it will cost per unit to raise the CAFE standards. It sounded good, so he said it.

I think Republic may have been referring to Krauthammer as the brilliant one. Personally, I’m not convinced that Obama is in that league, intellectually speaking. If he’s so sharp, why can’t he talk without a teleprompter? But I agree with you, RK, about Obama’s relationship to the truth. Eventually more people are going to see it, and O’s poll numbers will slowly but surely erode.

How did over half of the country not notice?...well, there is also the psychiatric term "Folie a deux" - the craziness of two, in which the pathologies of two people complement and play off of each other creating a super craziness more potent and relentless than that of each by itself. With Obama and half the country, we seem to have a "Folie de plus", in which Obama's need for power and the adoration of the masses meshes perfectly with the need of much of the population to feel that they are more righteous and sophisticated than others, and are involved in a great movement which will lift them above their ordinary, drab lives - they vote for the Obama who promises change and hope, and he provides them with the inspiration and superiority they can't obtain otherwise - and neither side has enough insight to break the bond - it's a scary and dangerous sickness.....

"Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, and one by one" - from Charles McKay's Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds, on the Dutch Tulip mania of the 17th century.....

“Thinking one is special is one factor. But the primary and destructive thing is the lack of empathy;”

You are saying nothing that disagrees with what I said. -n fact, the distorted worldview is part and parcel of the whole, spring for the lack of empathy and the distorted worldview that inevitably results. (If you think you are the only “real” person, your worldview is by definition distorted.)

In other words you nailed it except for not seeing that we are on the same page...

This is a great article. Well worth the read...

"...The narcissist in chief's cavernous lack of empathy becomes more obvious as his presidency rolls on.  It could hardly be called empathic behavior when Obama decided to drop all charges against Cole bomber Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri before Obama's scheduled meeting with the families of the Cole victims.

Barack Obama lied to us throughout the campaign and continues to do so as the president.  How did over half of the country not notice?  The simple answer is that we are just not very good at recognizing when someone is lying to us.  Our deception detection skills are inadequate. Barack Obama is acting out his pathology at our expense..."

Ding! We have a winner! Washington was offered the Crown and turned it down. Anyone with even the slightest narcissism wouldn’t have been able to do that. Reagan, too, was driven by his faith in God and America, both of which are literally incomprehensible to a narcisist (although they mimic the forms of faith VERY well if it suits their purposes).
