On May 4, 1970 members of the Ohio National Guard killed four students and wounded nine others at Kent State University. Some of the students were protesting the expansion of the Vietnam War into Cambodia. Others in the line of fire were just seeing what was going on, or walking to their classes.
Iconic photos of the event appearing in newspapers and television galvanized the nation and inflamed the anti-war movement in the U.S. Millions of students protested and nearly 1,000 colleges and universities were shut down after the Kent State shooting.
Yesterday, a young woman who was part of the crowd in Tehran, either protesting or simply watching the events unfold, was shot in the chest, apparently by Iranian Basiji security forces on rooftops.
Her death was recorded on video, and the gruesome end of her life sped digitally and virally around the world on social media sites, such as YouTube and Facebook.
"Neda," as she was known, has in a matter of hours become an icon for the Iranian protest movement.
Her image has become memorialized in posters, including one in style similar to those that represented the Barack Obama campaign. Clearly, this isn't what she had planned to do with her life.

I was very much alive in 1970 and I find the article’s comparison to be appropriate-—you see a difference?
and of course they somehow have to draw a similarity to obama. How disrespectful, she had more courage in her little finger than the pathetic excuse for a man has in his entire body...he is a coward.

I was also alive in 1970, and I find the comparison insulting. Yes, some of the victims at Kent State were innocent, but some had harrassed the troops, and were threatening them. The Guardsmen overreacted, but they were not full-time Federal troops, either. Neda was killed in cold blood by a sniper on a rooftop, not by scared kids being stoned and threatened by hundreds of Weathermen and SDS anarchists. See the difference?

This story was never fully reported or investigated, and the SDS may have had more to do with the death at Kent State than the Guardsmen.
There’s no comparison between the two.
Tell us what election had been overturned in the U.S., that the Kent State students were protesting against.
Universities across the nation had offices occupied and buildings torched. Banks were torched. Kent state was just another in a series of protests orchestrated by communist funded and sympathizing agencies in the United States.
Who is funding the protests in Iran? U.S. sympathizers?
The National Guard at Kent State was trying to prevent more destruction.
What you had was a bunch of out of control imbecilic students and some under trained National Guard troops who didn’t know how to quell civil protests adequately.
Were there orders from the federal government to shoot the students? Where there orders to drop acid on them from helicopters? Was the media prevented from reporting on the situation?
You really need to pull your head out.
I was alive and in Ohio at the time. My Dad had been a National Guardsman in the 60’s.
I remember my mother saying that the protesters had be threatening the National Guard troops, as you say.
The other thing about this is that NONE of the Protesters at Kent State did not have the option to walk away and go home untouched. If they did not protest there, they went on in their day to day lives.
The Iranians at this point go home to a good chance of being pulled out of their homes and killed in the streets.
No comparison at all.
The guardsmen had been on a week of 24/7 duty at a prison riot before their arrival in eastern Ohio. What happened that day was tragic and absolutely inexcusable but it was not the thought of the mayor of Kent, Gov Rhodes, or Pres. Nixon to use deadly force to destroy a protest movement. If the Basji are not operating with instructions from the Supreme Leader then there may be a distant comparison between Tehrah and Kent, but you and I both know whom the Basji work for.
Most of the fire was directed over the heads of the rioters. Unfortunately, some students who were evacuating to escape the riots became casualties as they were loading their cars in a parking lot on a rise opposite the Guard's position.
The video record seen nationally and rebroadcast to this day was heavily edited. For some reason the networks, and CBS in particular, showed footage that made the Guard to appear to be the aggressor.
Local television (I lived in the Cleveland area at the time) showed a lot more footage of the rioters and their unwarranted violence. When the shooting occurred, our reaction was —”It's about time!”
Unfortunately, the Communist rioters and their duped followers only grew stronger after this event — in no small part due to the warped coverage by Walter Cronkite and other Communist sympathizers in the dominating media.
The comfort I take in that is very faint.

Yes, I agree. I will say that I’m glad to see a number of folks here dispel the idea that these two situations are similar. A number of the retorts have been quite good.
If I recall the Guard was at Kent State because the ROTC building had been torched the night before. Something else left out of the usual recounting of the event.
This young girl and those with her are wearing blue jeans and sports shoes. Just like a lot of Americans do. I doubt she was one who was intent on keeping the mullahs happy. I imagine that her “western style” dress played a part in her being chosen as a target by that perverted, sick, raghead murderer who murdered her.
What's going on is official gov't policy. I.e. the government over there is ordering violent suppression.
What happened at Kent State was NOT ordered by the White House. It was one isolated incident. Exacerbated, I might add, by communists students accusing the Gov't falsely. The students in Iran, however, are agitating for true freedom.
This is interesting since I kinda compare Iran’s election to our ACORN community agitator phoney election in so many places which, by the way, the swooning press failed to investigate at all; yet, we’re subjected to round-the-clock coverage of the same shenanigans going on in Iran.
I’ve been reading comments on other websites, and I’m amazed at the people who think this death may have been faked. Is that some kind of talking point that’s going around? I mean, the poor girl has copious amounts of blood coming out of her mouth and nose. How do you fake that, unless you’ve got a Hollywood studio at your disposal?
It seems more appropriate to regard that image of Neda a slap in the face of the 0ne whose support for these people has been disgracefully AWOL.
If I remember correctly the Kent State shootings brought about the demise of campus riots...The students found out it wasn’t as much fun to sit it, and burn down buildings if you could get shot...

I wonder if Nuland can explain why a soldier cries out in pain and fear of death after they suffer a fatal trauma.
1) The blood smear on the pavement *under her* as they first move her body, before any blood appears on her face.
2) The blood coming out of both nostrils, but no evidence of coughing
3) The blood running into the left eye, but not even a half-checked movement to wipe it away. Try to get even plain water in your eye, in those amounts, without blinking or wiping it away.
4) The fixed eyes at the end.
She was murdered, and the people on the other sites are simply covering for Obama, and repeating what they have been told, like the clueless sheep they are.
Tell them that to their face.
Can you photoshop that to read "Hope" or "Change"?

I agree.. there is a big difference. I was a KSU grad & out of there just a short time when this event exploded at Kent.
The SDSers were very rude when I was there.. bold, brass, obnoxious and that is when they werent high... & when I read the accounts & recall what they were like stoned, I could see them pushing the limits to inexperienced National Guardsmen.
Neda... her life & its message in death if very profound. She will make a difference, not as she had planned but as fate has provided
The attempt to overturn a brutal and oppressive dictatorship in Iran is comparable with enemy-led protests of America's efforts to free millions of South Vietnamese from communist oppression and brutality?

"the purpose of all this agitation at Kent State was to recruit as much cannon fodder as possible, and then to provoke a "major confrontation." When it came, it would be neither accidental nor spontaneous. It would be exactly what the revolutionaries wanted.
On April 8, 1969, S.D.S. toughs marched through various campus buildings, disrupting classes as planned, chanting "Ho, Ho, Ho chi Minh," and striking campus police officers. One of these hoodlums pleaded nolo contendere to a charge of assault and battery, and drew a fine and jail sentence. The university scheduled a disciplinary hearing for two others on April sixteenth, at which time about one hundred revolutionaries smashed into the Music and Speech building where the hearing was being held, destroyed property, and again attacked police officers. Of the fifty-eight demonstrators arrested, ten were not even students at the school. At the rally preceding the march on the disciplinary hearing, non-student Jim Mellen told the audience as follows: "We're no longer asking you to come and help us make a revolution. We're telling you that the revolution has begun, and the only choice you have to make is which side you're on. And we're also telling you that if you get in the way of the revolution, it's going to run right over you." Mr. Mellen's remarks were included in a liberally distributed S.D.S. pamphlet, which began with a quotation from Mao Tse-tung and the following warning: "The war is on at Kent State University ...."
At a meeting in Williams Hall on April 28, 1969, revolutionary Communist Bernardine Dohrn said that people fighting "oppression" would have to carry weapons for "self defense." On May sixth, at another campus rally, Joyce Cecora called for armed rebellion: "They used guns at Cornell and they got what they wanted. It will come to that here!" And at still another rally on campus on May twenty-second, S.D.S. member Rick Skirvin said this: "We'll start blowing up buildings, we'll start buying guns, we'll do anything to bring this motherf***er down."
Michener quotes a student named Ken Tennant as follows: "With me it goes back to the music festival they held at Fred Fuller Park in September, 1969. Four Weathermen came down from Chicago, with insignia on their bib overalls. They were selling their organization newspaper, and I said, 'I'll buy a copy if you'll tell me what your outfit stands for.' They said, 'We're going to destroy this corrupt American society and build a better.' I asked how, and they explained, 'We've decided to close down schools all over the nation. We're going to start in Chicago. But we have our eye on Kent State, too. It could be ripe.' "
Bear in mind that we have room here to cite only a few examples of the inflammatory agitation and propaganda on the campus at Kent State for almost two years. The evidence establishes—in the words of the revolutionaries—that the goal of S.D.S. was to provoke a violent confrontation in which somebody would be hurt, or even worse.
And the most incredible such example took place on April 10, 1970, when Jerry Rubin spoke on the campus at Kent State. Jerry Rubin is a Communist, of course. We can be absolutely sure of that because he has said so repeatedly. In fact he said he was a Communist when your reporter asked him about it at the Democrat National Convention in Miami in 1972. At that Convention Rubin also said that, when he and his Comrades take over, your reporter will be gassed. At Kent State, Communist Jerry Rubin said this: "The first part of the Yippie program is to kill your parents. And I mean that quite literally, because until you're prepared to kill your parents, you're not ready to change this country. Our parents are our first oppressors."
Your first reaction on reading a thing like this, of course, is that maybe I have taken it out of context. You refuse to believe that anybody would say this. But Rubin really told the students what you just read. It is important to remember that, at the time, Jerry Rubin was a convicted criminal—he had been convicted for leading the turmoil at the 1968 Democrat National Convention in Chicago, where terrorists attacked the police—which raises the question of how such a man could be permitted to address students on a university campus in Ohio.**
Rubin also told the Kent State students to burn down the suburbs. "The American school system will be ended in two years," he explained. "We are going to bring it down. Quit being students. Become criminals. We have to disrupt every institution and break every law. We should have more laws so we can break them, too. Everybody should have their own law to break." As for the campus itself, Comrade Rubin told the students to ignore their professors, and to "burn all the books. It's quiet here now but things are going to start again."
The campus was now ready. Almost two years of intensive Communist propaganda had their effect. A sufficient number of students was willing to serve as cannon fodder for the revolutionary "cause." The Communists needed only an excuse to provoke their "major confrontation." Three weeks later they got their excuse.

"...it is important to quote at length from the state grand jury report on the affair: "Fifty-eight Guardsmen were injured by rocks and other objects hurled at them as they moved across the 'Commons' to Taylor Hall Hill and down to the practice football field, and were then forced to retreat .... it is clear that from the time the Guard reached the practice football field, they were on the defensive and had every reason to be concerned for their own welfare .... The circumstances present at that time indicate that 74 men surrounded by several hundred hostile rioters were forced to retreat back up the hill toward Taylor Hall under a constant barrage of rocks and other flying objects, accompanied by a constant flow of obscenities and chants such as 'Kill, Kill, Kill.' Photographic evidence has established, beyond any doubt, that as the National Guardsmen approached the top of the hill adjacent to Taylor Hall, a large segment of the crowd surged up the hill, led by smaller groups of agitators approaching to within short distances of the rear ranks of the Guardsmen.
