Here's a related article.

Is it “going-galt” or being frugal (living with less), being self reliant, buying cheap or used goods where the quality (utility matters) doesn’t really matter, or is this just ‘common sense’?

Heck I don’t NEED a lot of stuff, and don’t really care if I have most of it either, the rest I guess God will give if I really need it~!

Most businesses are Mom & Pop size or 50 employees or less; if we stop spending, these people suffer;

Not enough mom and pop businesses explain these things to their employees.

I guess it depends. Personally, I like to spend money(responsibly of course). It is nice to enjoy the fruits of your labor.

We are seniors here, and have been living pretty low on the hog because of that, and my husband’s parkinson’s.

Library for books, work on cutting down on all utilities. (we have a wood stove for winter heat), keep our lights off, try to use only one pot for dinner. Use a lot of rice and dehydrated veggies, and grow our own fruits and veggies for in season eating.

DITTO. Obama and the Dems came to power with support from independents (approx 35 percent of pop). Conservatives represent 40 percent, libs 25 percent. The only way to make the independents lose faith in Obama and the Dems is to help the economy to fail. This can be done like you said, buy only necessary things, with hold spending on non esstentials. If all the conservatives did that, sales would plummet, more layoffs and the independents will grumble. This is call consumer vigilantism. This can work because 2/3 of the US economy depends on consumer spending. You are right people will get hurt by this strategy, but it will turn the sentiment against the government as unemployment rises and the Depression is prolonged. The Dems will be voted out in 2010 and Obama in 2012. Conservatives can blame the economic diseaster on environmentalists, illegal immigration, lying MSM and big government advocates. Reset the country and we will open our wallets to fuel the recovery. It sounds like a plan, beats buying a gun and preparing to shoot the authorities that will get you killed or jailed. Government cannot force you to consume goods. Communists could not find a way to do that.

It’s your money so I can’t tell you what to do with it, however I have always thought it better (and even more godly to live simply: though there is nothing wrong with enjoying it sometimes), give Him the ‘first fruits’ (and chairity, etc..) and not to flaunt wealth too much!

I’m already pretty much a non-consumer. I was going to buy my grandkids some school clothes next week and we are planning a trip to the water slide but that is just because
they only visit here once a year so could I hold off a week?

The author wants to arrest all the crooks, & I do, too. Problem is, their jobs are then filled with more crooks who repeat the process. The success of our republican system is premised on HONORABLE people acting in the best interest of the people & nation. But there are very few honorable people in gov’t & big business. The vast majority are perverts, cheats, liars, & thieves, interested only in wealth & power. The honorable are overwhelmed, leaving our well-being in the hands of the corrupt.

In no system, however well crafted, can the people & nation prosper if the leaders are corrupt, immoral, & dishonorable. And to legislate more & more control & power only magnifies the corruption.

IMO, the only solution is a vastly smaller government with far less influence on the economy & social issues. The Feds should have ZERO dominion over Health, Education, Welfare, etc. - close the relevant bureaucracies, for good. Gov’t influence on business & the economy should be limited to catching/jailing thieves & fraudsters. Congress should be severely limited in the areas it can legislate. Interstate commerce regulations should REALLY be about interstate commerce. States rights should be preeminent on domestic social issues.

Perhaps if our gov't was much smaller, with little domestic influence, the corrupt might abandon gov't "service" as unprofitable. Or if we are doomed to be forever ruled by the corrupt, let them have as little power & influence as possible.

I think grandchildren are exempt, but it is probably time to get them on the “frugal” program.

This economy is going to crash sooner or later, and if they think it is the “new chic craze” to shop yard sales, trade with friends for clothes and games, etc... they may be so upset by the downturn.

Maybe take them to some yard sales for fun in addition to the water park, and just see if there are any bargains to be found.

I know you cannot be super specific in your methods, but you provide some tips to the rest of us in how to do this?

As far as a consumer strike goes, I think this is an excellent idea. Consumer confidence took a big dip in June. If we could manage to get 10% of Americans on board via facebook and other networking sites, this could really take off. Holding your own money hostage against socialist agendas is an idea that I really like.

I totally agree with you, and have for years!

Furthermore, if steps are not taken to re-establish production/manufacturing in the USA, our days are numbered. In this one area, RP was right.

Wow...this is a totally timely article.

I've just started reading a new book about this very topic. I'm only up to the third chapter, but from what I can tell it's dealing exactly with what this article is talking about.

Buy silver bullion bars. Buy a little each month. Recommend 1 oz bars made by Engelhard, Johnson & Matthey, and Heraeus. These minters are well known world wide, just in case you need to sell your bars anywhere. One troy ounce bars/ingots cost about 15 to 17 bucks per ounce. Accumulate as much as possible. Reason is if high inflation/hyperinflation hits, your silver will keep up in value if you must convert silver to dollars. If we survive the inflation, there is only a five year supply of silver from mining before the industrial demand outstrips supply. Due to the low price of silver, most of our silver in the past were consumed and disposed. Prices must go up in order to encourage mass recycling like we do with gold. Many experts feel silver will be the second metal on the periodical table that may become extinct in practical terms. I am using two websites to buy silver bullion bars. They are www.apmex.com and www.bulliondirect.com. NOTE: I do not work for these sites nor own stock in them. Hope info is helpful.

Thanks for pointing that out!

It looks like Karl and Tom (the author of the book I’ve been reading) have a lot in common :-)

"refuse an MRI at a hospital that uses GE MRI machines or x-ray machines"

That may be a tall order. Their stuff is everywhere in the radiological field. I really do wish people would do this though. I work in IT at a hospital. Anytime I've ever interacted with ANYONE from GE, it has been a terrible experience. Every single one was a bastard, and that's being kind. We recently ditched GE in our Radiology department. They were effectively holding a gun to our head for more $$$$$, so we went with another radiology system, that was BETTER for LESS money. I was glad to see them go.

Two themes that conservatives should laser focus:

1) Reform the damn tax system-fair or flat-but it needs to change

2) Get rid of LAWYERS!!!!
