About 2 years ago I was patrolling near a vacant 2 story apartment building located in a know crack infested area and saw 2 crackheads climb in a broken out 1st floor window. This building had been vacant for years and had about 40 units + a basement. I called it in and we waited for the Metro K9 unit to show up before we entered. We went in and right away the K9 wanted to go to the second floor. About half way down the floor, he started freaking out. The 2 crackheads bolted from a room at the far end of the hallway and tried to go down a stairwell but the door was locked. I took off after them and when I passed the K9 (narrow hallway) he ripped a chunk out of the left sleeve of my winter coat and ripped my long sleeve shirt. Lesson learned - when a K9 is focused on the bad guy don't get near him.
Another time, we found a door kicked in an abandoned warehouse. Before we entered we called for emergency radio traffic only. The building was huge. About 30 seconds into it, some knucklehead from another area called into dispatch. Our radio's echoed through that empty warehouse announcing that someone was in there. We didn't find anyone but did find stolen property. Lesson learned - Make sure knuckleheads go on the next search so they know the importance of stop, look and listen.
My youngest made a run to another state to get the “good” fireworks. We’ll be in “noise making” mode on the Fourth! :-) Arty sims would be good though...but good heavens they’re LOUD! :-)
We’re all paying ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, PBS and God knows who else when we pay our cable televison bill.
