I’m confused by all the confusion among the chattering classes about Palin. I thought her press conference explained it very clearly – though she couldn’t put it precisely this way without sounding vain, but it’s obvious.
Even though she’s just a state governor, she’s a HUGE national star who is both sought after and attacked as if she is already a president (a Bush, not an Obama). But she basically can’t participate because she’s tethered to the governor’s office up in Alaska. Consequently, she has to fight with one hand tied behind her back and she also can’t go around the country campaigning for candidates and principles she believes in – because she’s governor and would be accused of neglecting the state.
Meanwhile, the Lt. Gov. is a great guy, so she’s leaving the state in good hands and now she can go on to be an even bigger star.
It’s a weird Washington insider perspective to be perplexed by what she’s doing. Contrary to Mark Sanford’s e-mails to his mistress, no one was really impressed with him; 99.99999999999999999% of Americans didn’t know who he was. Who is more influential: Rush Limbaugh, Matt Drudge and Bill O’Reilly, or Tim Pawlenty, Bobby Jindal and Mark Sanford (before the fall)? As Palin said, God bless people who run for political office, but – and she didn’t say this part – she’s too big to be a lame-duck governor stuck dealing with fishing licenses in Anchorage right now.
She’ll be much bigger now and can play on the national stage without constantly setting off state ethics investigations by loons, parasites and liberals. None of this applied to McCain or Kerry – both of whom went back to the Senate – because their national campaigns diminished them. Palin’s national campaign made her a major star. As she said, she’s not retreating, she’s advancing in another direction.
Yeah, I saw that. Too bad. It was a good tag for he/she/it.

Oh, she is great! I loved her grit. I loved her genuine down to earth nature. I thought she was tough, and would never quit fighting for what is right. I believed that she would do everything it took to fight for conservative values, defend them and embody those values.
By quitting, she destroys those values. She crushes what I believed she stood for.
She validates her critics with this move.
If it is the “best thing for Alaska” that she quit being their (fishing license) leader; why would America think that it would be the best thing for the nation for her to be the leader of our national government?
Supporters need to be realistic, we need to be informed and never ever blindly follow politicians.

Do you understand that Palin was tethered to Alaska and getting bombarded with expensive, frivolous “ethics” complaints? And do you understand that she is now FREE to raise a gajillion dollars from mainland coast to mainland coast? And that by resigning now, the new guy (reportedly a conservative Republican) will get a tremendous leg up (as the incumbent) on getting elected to a full term in the next gubernatorial election?
And do you not see the complete tizzy the scumbags are in thanks to her announcement?

You have expressed much better than I, how I feel about this whole mess.
I was hoping that she would prove herself while in the governor’s office. That she would truly take this time to learn the craft of leadership, how to influence and argue her case effectively. I had expected her to emerge a stronger, smarter candidate in 2012, and silence her critics.
I see now, that this is not to be.

Do you not see that what you just described to me is a selfserving politician who puts her own ambitions ahead of her duty to serve out the term Alaskans elected her to serve? Do you not see that what you described is a person who puts finances ahead of duty? Self ahead of country?
And do you not see that the dems are giddy that she was done this?!
I think you and Sarah have over estimated her ‘star value’.
The crowds that come to see her, didn’t win the election for her the last time. They certainly won’t this time. Celebrity does not a leader make...just look at the president.
I suppose you think Kate Gosselin-—who draws huge crowds to her appearances, should be President?...well, okay truth be told, I would vote for Kate over Obama any day!
Reagan lost the first run for President to Ford at the convention. He did not waver but spent four years gathering support for the next nomination.
Palin makes a name for the 2012 election. In 2016 she will be about, what, 53?

I really like what I’ve seen of Sarah Palin. The left vigorously hates her and that makes me feel warmer towards her, but I will be watching closely how the Republican party treats her. I don’t trust them after they gave us John McCain. The Republican party has been so seriously infiltrated that if she’s a strong conservative like I suspect she is, she won’t get ten feet from the door. The faux republicans will put her through the shredder just like the media does. After all they tried to marginalize her when McCain lost. So we’ll see.
Give me a break, our elected thieves in Washington do it all the time, but with less nerve.
Look at the present squatter in the Whitehouse and the failed McCain who both wanted to be POTUS BUT still held their place as elected thieves in case their attempts fail, kind of like having their cake and eating it also.
