Don't overlook Palin's core GOP support
The Manchester Union-Leader / The Politico ^ | July 7, 2009 | Roger Simon

Posted on 07/07/2009 8:58:54 AM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Sarah Palin is a sinner. She has violated several commandments and thoroughly deserves the savage beating that she is now getting from political mandarins and media elites.

If it were not for one simple fact, I would say she was through in politics. And that fact is that if the Republicans were picking a nominee today, they would pick Sarah Palin.

No? Don’t believe me? Who would beat her? Tim Pawlenty? Bobby Jindal? Haley Barbour? Mike Huckabee? Mitt Romney?

All of these men might build credible, attractive, even powerful political operations by 2012. But right now? Today? Today, Sarah Palin would be the winner, because more than anyone else, she has won over the hearts and minds of the Republican rank and file. (And tell me that a Sarah Palin-Newt Gingrich ticket would not set conservative hearts aflutter.)

She has done this by sinning, however. Let us list just some of the political commandments she has recently violated:

Thou shalt not surprise the media.

Palin announces she is quitting her job as governor of Alaska, and she catches everybody by surprise. What is up with that?

Where were the leaks and the trial balloons? Why weren’t the media alerted so they could have predicted it?

When you do what the media have predicted, you are “savvy.” You are a “skilled” and “adept” politician.

If you surprise the media, however, you are “out of control” and “bizarre” and even “egotistical.” (Though I have always believed that accusing politicians of being egotistical is like accusing ballerinas of dancing on their toes.)

How badly do some in the media take to surprise?(continued)

Palin/Bolton in ‘12 works for me. Whatever she doesn’t know about foreign policy by then will more than be made up for by him. She is incredibly inspiring, and very much down to earth - a quality lacking in virtually all of the plastic-haired elitists on both sides of the aisle. It would mean a return to a vigorous, proud and self-interested foreign policy, a complete reversal of the surrender-monkey policy now in place.

Besides, if some deranged wackjob liberal (/redundancy) were to off Sarah, I’d be proud to have Bolton as POTUS.

I really like Sarah and support her. I still reserve my opinion wether she would make a good President though. Give her some time. She still has a way to go.

I am disappointed that Palin took the route of resignation because I would much prefer conservatives stand their ground and fight.

Oh for the love of Pete! Just what the heck do you think she's doing? She's fighting back. She just changed the battlefield and the rules of engagement!

Please try and keep up

By my count, there were over ten Republican candidates for president and probably a like number of Democrat candidates. They were all following the same strategy and listening to the same experts. All but one lost.

I remember working with a very smart man who, despite his brilliance could never get himself promoted. Despite his repeated failure, other employees would line up to seek his advice on career advancement. I could never understand the thought process that would cause someone to seek advice from or adopt the approach of those who could not win for themselves.

Governor Palin was a member of a team that conducted a “conventional campaign” with established experts and strategist. She was “handled” by the smart people and prevented from being herself. Her team lost.

The experts, the smart people, the brilliant strategist now call her crazy, a quitter, or an inarticulate bumpkin, but so far she has won just as many presidential election as they have. This time, she seems determined to do things her way regardless of who likes it or who doesn’t. She can’t do any worse than she did by following the advice of the smart people.

President Nixon talked about the “silent majority” and when he was able to mobilize them, he won one of the greatest electoral victories ever. Governor Palin may or may not be able to duplicate that accomplishment, but with a hostile and out of touch press, radical congressional leadership, and an ever increasing public disaffection with government at all levels, it seems the stars may be aligning themselves for a major movement by the people to toss the bums out, regardless of party. It may just be time for a candidate who does not fit the conventional mold.

My suggestion has evolved into a picture book showing the “energy” areas of Alaska..the current gas and oil areas, and those to be used in the future.(wink)
It could be photographed by a profession photographer with Sarah writing paragraphs describing its contents and her involvement.
She could then go on a book tour and use it as a jumping off point to expound her expertise on energy and her goal for an independent free America.

And besides the Gore influenced liberals would go crazy.

Is the event at the Reagan library free?

If so I would love to attend and show my support.

The Simi Valley Republican Women's Federated dinner on Saturday night (8/8) is $150/each -- I think.

But I cannot imagine that Sarah Palin would come all the way to southern California for ONE event. :o)

And, even if this **is** her only public appearance in the area for this trip, I suspect that the L.A. Chapter (and FRiends) will be there IN FORCE to counter any ANTI-Sarah goons that may choose to show up outside.

Last time I checked, it is FREE to join us on the sidewalk OUTSIDE the Reagan Library -- with lots of AMERICAN FLAGS -- and SIGNS that show our support.

Exactly. And the lady knows how to keep her own counsel.

Gov. Palin’s family, not wanting to go to the poor house because of frivolous law suits, and not wanting to spend so much time defending herself which would hurt Alaska, because she won’t have the time to do her job, are certainly good reasons to step down.

What bothers me is that the HARD left (not all libs) won with their viciousness which will embolden them to attack other politicians from the right.

I suggest we fight back by writing letters to the editor, because LMSM and leftist bloggers will win, if we are silent.

I agree. I like her as a person but just can’t take her seriously as a presidential candidate.

I agree that the “smart people”, the professional political consultants, are the downfall of conservative candidates. They are constantly polling, doing focus groups, etc., and then chasing the mushy middle or moderates. As a result we rarely get a choice between conservative policies and principles and liberal ones.

Add to that the liberals willingness to lie about any and every thing to gain power and we end up with the lying liberal looking more conservative than the middle-seeking conservative and the liberal wins on conservative principles.

I want a candidate that tells those professional consultants, “I’ll set the direction of this campaign. You just do the campaign grunt work like media buying, logistics for appearances, etc. I’ll talk to the media, not you. I’ll decide what to say, not you. I’ll write my speeches if need be but mostly I’ll speak extemporaneously.”

In other words, let Sarah be Sarah and everything will be fine.
