Police chief denounces 'cowardly' iPhone users monitoring speed traps [DC angry about lost $]
Washington Examiner ^

Area drivers looking to outwit police speed traps and traffic cameras are using an iPhone application and other global positioning system devices that pinpoint the location of the cameras.

That has irked D.C. police chief Cathy Lanier, who promised her officers would pick up their game to counteract the devices, which can also help drivers dodge sobriety checkpoints.

"I think that's the whole point of this program," she told The Examiner. "It's designed to circumvent law enforcement -- law enforcement that is designed specifically to save lives."

The new technology streams to i-Phones and global positioning system devices, sounding off an alarm as drivers approach speed or red-light cameras.

Lanier said the technology is a "cowardly tactic" and "people who overly rely on those and break the law anyway are going to get caught" in one way or another.

The greater D.C. area has 290 red-light and speed cameras -- comprising nearly 10 percent of all traffic cameras in the U.S., according to estimates by a camera-tracking database called the POI Factory.

Good point.

Speed cameras do NOTHING to slow drivers down for safety reasons.
And if slowing them down is the point, then they are worthless.

Obviously, slowing drivers is not the point.

“It's designed to circumvent law enforcement — law enforcement that is designed specifically to save lives.”

BS. It's just another way to get the last dime out of your pocket.

Personally, I fully support any way to beat these things 100%. I have to drive through no less than 4 of the damn things just to get home. It's just robbery and totalitarian conduct on the part of elected officials and the cops that support them.

” law enforcement that is designed specifically to save lives”

Traffic tickets are about revenue. Period.

The "alarm" is your GPS or iPhone alerting you to a reported camera or speedtrap location.

Oh, thanks for the clarification.

I have always said; let the revenue from the red light cameras and other automated things, just be directed to the state or federal government. The local departments and governments would get no financial benefit from them.

Then we would see how important the “safety” aspect really is for these things to exist!

They would disappear in less than a month.

Great to know that people are still asserting the right to travel without encountering armed highwaymen.

I only wish they would focus their attention on the bandits in Congress.

As somebody who used to commute into DC, I think this is sweet.

If the technology is readily available I will use this to dissuade local county govt. from going this route, which they are attempting at this point.

Well, don't people slow down when they know there is radar? Seems to me like it does save lives.

Not when they have to divide their attention between the alarms, the speed cameras, the marked and unmarked cops and the road.

Great idea!
