Gold Rush In Alaska
Washington Post ^ | 7/8/09 | Kathleen Parker

Posted on 07/08/2009 4:56:14 AM PDT by steve-b

When you're up to your waders in barracuda, blame the media.

And quit your job.

And say you did it for the people.

And hire an agent.

And try to keep a straight face.

On your way to the bank.

Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public, H.L. Mencken once said. Terribly elitist fellow, that Mencken. If only he were alive to witness the phenomenon of Sarah Palin, whose biography validates every cynical thought that ever found expression in his prolific prose.....

Meanwhile, getting real, can we stop pretending that Palin is interested in anything other than her own ambition?

Can we also stop nodding assent every time she says the media are to blame for her self-inflicted wounds? The media invented Sarah Palin. Before the media shined their light on those no-place-like-home slippers, does anyone recall ever wondering what a governor of Alaska was up to?...

"Let's face it, she just doesn't really want to govern, and she's doing what's best for her," said a Republican campaign strategist who has worked with Palin.

"This is a win-win," said another. "It's a win for her because she is not politically viable, and now hopefully she can make a lot of money, have balance and affect culture in a positive way. It's a win for the Republican Party because she was the female version of [George W.] Bush in some ways. She is not intellectually curious. We need and have smart, competent alternatives."...

“The notion that Mencken was an anti-Semite gained notoriety in 1990, with the publication of his diary. That book included a couple of brief passages that could be interpreted as anti-Semitic. The editor declared Mencken an anti-Semite, and the publisher made rather a big deal of it, presumably in hopes of increasing the book’s sales at the expense of the author’s reputation.

“Against the notion that Mencken was anti-Semitic stood the evidence of his entire life: most of his closest friends were Jews, he expressed sympathy for Jewish settlement in Palestine, he advocated that the United States accept German Jewish refugees from Hitler’s pogrom. There was also the testimony of the people who knew him.”

Mencken also despised journalists, who he saw as ink-stained wretches. He was a serious cynic, and attacked scoundrels wherever he found them, and he found them a lot. Were he alive today, he would roundly curse The Washington Post as a gutter rag.

If for no other reason, he should be honored today as one of the very few who had the guts, and the respect, to be *allowed* to criticize both presidents Roosevelt, men who in their time had silenced many critics.

I LIKE IT! It would have the additional pleasant side effect of inducing multiple strokes in the MSM crowd. MoDo would be off the wagon permanently.

One of my Mom's favorite sayings was “Success is the best form of revenge!” Amen! And I can't wait to do my part to help SarahCuda serve them up a great big heaping helping of red hot revenge!

Kathleen Parker can take her snarky, transparent attempts to destroy Palin over to the HuffPo or similar liberal rag

Huh? She already did that -- what part of "Washington Post" is unclear?

Your obsession with negative Sarah Palin stories is quite disturbing. You need professional help son.

Let’s compare:

Kathleen - Journalism degree. Writes a nationally syndicated article read by thousands. Wrote a book that sold thousands. Hangs out with Chris Matthews where she is seen by hundreds.

Sarah - Journalism degree. Most popular governor in the largest state in the US. Has been fronted more money to write her book than Kathleen’s book made in gross sales. Can draw a crowd of tens of thousands of supporters in any one horse town she stops in.

This poorly written article is full of cheap shots, cliches and envy. Lots and lots of envy. Notice there isn’t a crowd of Sarahs writing about Kathleen.

Unfortunately, her column is also carried by conservative-leaning newspapers, including The Manchester Union Leader. I'd like to see it relegated to the fringe outlets, as I mentioned in my original post.

Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public, H.L. Mencken once said.

According to several sources, the actual quote is, "No one ever went broke underestimating the taste of the American public."

I know this will come as a shock, and probably means nothing, but Ms. Parker loves to wax poetic about Mr. Mitt Romney...

I know, it's just a "coincidence".

Ol’ Kathy must be off her meds again; she’s sounding more and more like the late unlamented harridan Molly Ivins of the Ft Worth Star-Telegram.

Disingenuous statement, Ms. Parker. It wasn’t ordinary Alaskans who filed the complaints. Mostly it was Democrap and Obama professional and semi-professional operatives.

Actually it was ONE democrat operative filing numerous frivilous ethics complaints. KP knows this, but instead makes her disingenuous statement anyway.
