GOP Looks for at Least 20 'No' Votes

WASHINGTON -- Opponents of Judge Sonia Sotomayor's nomination to the Supreme Court suggested they would consider it a victory if more than half of the Senate's 40 Republicans voted against her in this week's confirmation hearing, as the GOP grapples with how aggressively to challenge the nominee. Many Republicans said they viewed 23 "no" votes as a benchmark, because that would be one more than Chief Justice John Roberts received in 2005 and would reflect a significant protest vote. Others said that if the Senate GOP were to split roughly in half, that would signal support to conservatives who oppose Judge Sotomayor without angering Hispanic voters with a wholesale dismissal of her nomination.

Any senator who votes to confirm Sotomayor is voting for legal discrimination against white people. That's all there is to it.

I’m sick to death of politicians endlessly negotiating greater and lesser evils rather than standing for principle. Spineless on a good day.

Pathetic.

Great, we’d decided that we’d settle for a moral victory instead of a real one.

She’s going to be confirmed and we are doomed.

How about doing what's RIGHT instead of just covering your ass?

I just threw my Republican Party contribution solicitation into the trash. It could have been worse. The next time I get one in the mail, I’m going to put several bricks into a small cardboard box and tape their Business Reply Envelope neatly on the top of the box and mail it back to them.

Anathema in DC and certainly amongst the Senate

“We want to oppose but we don’t want to piss off hispanics.”

Take a stand and forget the posturing.

Moral or otherwise, we’ll just have another appointee with the same “racial” rose colored glasses that will be nominated.

It should be 40 no votes, not 20.

ya know, enough is enough....we are screwed until 2012 anyway, so let’s send a message in 2010.....do not vote for or elect to office a single republican...give the democrats 100 percent control of the house and 80 percent control of the senate...we can then dig through the ashes of the destroyed republican party and rebuild it...call it the phoenix party

well, no republican will get my vote, why even vote anymore, the County recorders Offices have everything rigged anyway, (motor voter, early voting, all democrat minority vote counters working at the offices ) I’m joining sides with the “mccain haters” , let the democrats have everything, then try and rebuild from the ashes

She’s not replacing Thomas, Scalia, Roberts or Alito. She’s certainly not replacing Kennedy. The decisions of the court probably won’t be affected too much. They don’t have the numbers to avoid confirmation so it’s a moot point.

What is irritating is that the GOP is still playing games. In case they missed it, your “base” hates you right now. Scheming how many votes will bring you applause or temper our attitudes about you only makes it worse. Hispanics that only care about race won’t think better of you for 20 votes against anymore than they would think well of you if all 40 were in favor. Just as their opinions of McCain were not all warm and fuzzy despite leading a charge for amnesty.

Do the right thing and vote her down en masse because she is not qualified. That would be the right thing to do. If the GOP had any remaining principles that is what would happen.

And they wonder why I tell them ‘no money’?

The last few calls I’ve gotten - from both the RNC & McCain - were pretty hostile. When someone wants you to donate, and they start shouting at you...it is a good sign they are hearing the same message over and over.

Pretty good if it's cherry, thanks.

You'll forgive Republicans for holding to the tradition that presidents should have the nominees they want. They actually respect the office. It's the Democrats who abandon all civility and respect because of party politics. It's the Democrats who destroy and maim in the name of diversity.

If you want more conservative justices, elect more conservative presidents.

It shows these Senators have a dim view of Hispanic voters that they would vote for an unqualified Hispanic woman just because she’s a Hispanic woman, as if the Hispanic voters are too stupid to understand why she’s unqualified.
