Sarah Palin makes a play for Democrat votes: Appears to be planning to lead a third party
The London First Post ^ | July 13, 2009 | Jonathan Harwood

Sarah Palin still won't say whether she's building towards a presidential campaign in 2012. But she does plan to stay involved in national politics and appears to be casting herself as the possible leader of a new movement in American politics, one that would welcome Republicans and Democrats.

"I will go around the country on behalf of candidates who believe in the right things, regardless of their party label or affiliation," she said in an interview with the Washington Times on Sunday. "People are so tired of the partisan stuff - even my own son is not a Republican," she added. Her son, Track, 20, who is serving with the US Army in Iraq, and her husband, Todd, are registered as 'non-partisan' in Alaska.

She also claimed that her decision to stand down as Governor of Alaska - which was revealed in a bizarre press conference on July 3 - was because the barrage of press attacks and allegations about her conduct and ethics had undermined her political programme.

The decision has bolstered her popularity among Republicans. A USA Today-Gallup poll found two-thirds of Republicans questioned wanted her to remain "a major national political figure".

It also seems to confirm the thoughts of those commentators who suspect that the prospect of national fame rather than ideology is her guiding star.

Andrew Sullivan, writing in the Sunday Times, said: "I love the idea of Sarah Palin: a brassy no-nonsense enemy of bloated government and corruption. That was probably John McCain's rough idea of who she was in the five minutes his staff vetted her, and on the one occasion he'd met her, before offering her a chance to be leader of the free world. The idea of Sarah Palin, though, is sadly not the reality of Sarah Palin.

"The reality of Sarah Palin is that politics is a means to her higher goal: celebrity. Every action she takes is designed to make sense... if you believe that government is really a version of a reality show.

"The remote, David Lynch-style location, the family often in trouble with the law, the pregnant teenage daughter and her impossibly handsome redneck boyfriend, the boyfriend's angry sister, an ornery Alaskan trooper, a few moose and mysterious pregnancies... and, well, the mini-series never ends. The best guess I've heard of the real reason for her abrupt departure is: 'I'm a celebrity... get me out of here!'"

One of Palin's first engagements after leaving office on July 26 comes on August 8 when she will address a Republican women's rally in California - in an aeroplane hangar that houses a retired presidential aircraft Air Force One, prompting more questions about her ambitions. Media will be banned from the meeting.

Imagine banning the media from an event when they've been so nice to her and her family and bent over backwards to be impartial! As for the "third party" musings, she's never said anything about that, it's the good ol' media again putting words in her mouth, although the way the RINOs are acting it's sounding better and better each time I hear it. This is coming from someone who was a Republican at 12 years old and worked to elect Jerry Ford (1976), Al Haig (1987), both Bushes and Fred Thompson (last year - I was in the service during most of President Reagan's terms and couldn't dabble in politics).

I don’t think she’s forming a 3rd party.

I believe her intent is to take over and make over the Republican party the way she did in Alaska. If she does, RINOs and the “log cabin” will be marginalized.

She has my support.

According to Harwood, it's not about Conservatism, but Palin's pursuit of "celebrity."

Idiots still don't get it...

I am sick of idiots in the media trying to spin their wishful thinking into news stories....and BTW, there was nothing bizarre about her news conference. But every MSM story calls it bizarre. It was a coherent well-thought out and delivered speech. But the media somehow twisted it into things that were not said. The media was in fact reporting that Palin was quitting politics, which is exactly the opposite of what she was saying.

Coming from a guy who said we should vote for Obama????? Give me a break.

In 2002, Palin lost primary in close run to Murkowski. Everybody in Ak wanted her to mount an AIP run for gov (3rd party). She refused, wouldn’t burn her bridges to repubs. One thing supporting good dem candidates, another destroying the repub party. Not in the cards for Sarah.

Good to sea os publications taking up the story. The poo-bahs we have probably read them, they certainly have no clue what’s going on in the US. Hope it causes a unexpected tingle in one of their appendages.

Palin destroy the Rs? There aren't more than a few dozen worth their salt. I hope she begins to build resistance to socialism, and that can only come from a new party.

I would feel better if Sarah went independent and took her 50+ million supporters with her. How in the world can you clean up the Republican party? At any rate she is the only one speaking out on the issues in a manner that is raising the awareness that we need in the country right now.

The left keeps calling it a “bizarre press conference” I think they just like to write the phrase. I don’t know what is so bizarre about it, plus ANY press conference with Biden speaking is more bizarre than any of SP’s.

Any talk of a third party is destructive and assures continued power for the RATS. Of course, they’re doing a pretty good job of making sure they have the whole country dependent on them and also making sure they remain in power through fraud. If those on our side want to help them—shame on them!!!!

Palin did not make over the Alaskan GOP. That gang of thieves, along with their demrat compatriots, have filed, continue to file or aid and abet nuisance lawsuits against her.

But, I’m curious—Exactly how do you think Gov. Palin can “take over” the National GOP given that it is controlled by RINOs and their Demrat Party enablers?

This is wishful thinking.

Gerald Celente has predicted the rise of a third party that cannot be stopped, that will seriously challenge our two-headed one party system.

Your premise is just plain wrong. Already this am, I've seen Eric Cantor on CNBC passionately laying out the case why the RAT's healthcare plan is destructive to our country.

Maybe I watch different channels than the Republican bashers on FR but I see Republican after Republican all day on FOX and CNBC warning America as to how the RATS are destroying this country.

I am extremely proud of their efforts and I am proud to be a Republican. They're doing a GREAT job. Give them a chance. Pay attention and stop wanting to be a victim.

Total surrender to RATS. This is STUPID!!! If you can't get enough numbers in the Republican party to get what you want, how are you going to do it by forming a so-called "perfect third party"? This is pie-in-the sky delusional thinking.

Do you also believe in Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy. Anyone who believes there is a chance of a third party succeeding obviously doesn't understand the process.

First the chance of a third party winning any election is remote and the chance of winning 51% of either chamber of congress or the presidency is impossible.

Wake up and face reality!!!

I haven’t sent the RINO party a dime since the election, their whining and bleating and petulant requests for support notwithstanding.

Something’s gotta change, and it ain’t gonna be me.

As a software engineer, wishful thinking is a way of life for me.
:)

Sometimes it pans out, some times it doesn’t. You take what you can when you can. After that, you say, “Next.”

To the Leftist Press (redundant, I know), anything a conservative does or says or thinks is bizarre.
