When America is finally ready to reckon with the phenomenon that was Sarah Palin, I suspect we will discover that whatever she represents actually had less to do with her gender, class, or ideology than we now believe. It's easy to look at the soon-to-be-former governor of Alaska as an iconic feminist, a path-breaking working mother, or noble rabble-rousing populist. But when the dust settles, the lesson may be that she was simply a woman who made no sense. Her meteoric rise and dubious fall will say less about America than you think, beyond the fact that America likes its politicians to communicate their ideas clearly. We will someday come to realize that while it's all well and good to be mavericky with one's policies, it's never smart to be mavericky with one's message.

People still read Slate? I mean Mickey Kaus can be good, but the rest? Why?
Dahlia Lithwick is a contributing editor at Newsweek and senior editor at Slate. She writes “Supreme Court Dispatches” and “Jurisprudence”
from WIKI
heh! very droll, Dahlia
Sarah is my HERO!
If only the rest of us had 10% of her strength, common sense and fortitude we would live in a much better world!
Go Sarah go...we love you dearly!
I don't think anyone can accuse Slate of being intellectual.
The louder these socialist dogs bark the better !
Means they are afraid !
SARAH 2012 !
I did not say 3rd party. She will do just like she did in Alaska, run against the GOP establishment and Democrat. She stayed in the party, but ran against the corrupt leadership.
Where do I begin? The meme prescribed by the left is that Sarah was incoherent, rambling. Most media reviews used those terms. I listened to Sarah’s entire resignation speech on the radio. It was clear and in outline order. Her basketball metaphor was pitch-perfect.
I’ve since watched the video several times and read the transcript. It is even more clear. Sarah is not gone, she did not “quit,” and she explained clearly why she’s handed off the governorship to her hand-picked lieutenant governor.
No sense arguing with liberals. I’ll just get the popcorn ready and wait for the speech at the Reagan Library in August.
Who is Slate calling, “us”?
Maybe the Mods will delete this whole thread. It does violate the Barf tag/sarc.

This Dahlia Lithwick is just a Harvard Law graduate — and a pretty frustrated one at that, I take it — beating up on Sarah Palin, when, if you buy into the tripe about the superiority of Harvard Law graduates to the rest of the great unwashed, there shouldn’t be any reason for Ms. Lithwick to take apart Palin in such a personal way. And PUHLEEZ, can we all STAND Lithwick’s pompous “she speaks in riddles and koans” (quick all of you great unwashed, run for the dictionary!) and Sarah is “not truly politically realized in the eyes of the American public”!!! Truly Politically Realized? Could we please not speak in academic psychobabble?
Defining themselves.
Let it role off.
(A) Nobody knows what she's going to do, so talks of a presidency is premature
(B) She never indicated a 3rd party run, assuming if she's seeking political office to begin with.
She won't peel off Dem votes and will split Republicans.
As an Independent Conservative within the GOP, she will rebuild the old Reagan coalition and attract conservative Democrats and libertarians.
Dahlia, had Barack Obama clearly described his intentions for his first year in office, you wouldn’t be writing this article. Because had he done that, he would most likely still be a senator from Illinois. John McCain would be president, and the mentally-disabled person living at the Vice President’s House would be Trig Palin, not Joe Biden.
It never fails. There's always a few FReepers who'll completely ignore the facts and just carry on with their bashing of Palin.
We should always use these opportunities to communicate with her ~ since she reads and values our comments.
So, Dahlia, your days in Newsweek's secret Nazi army has come to an end. We know you're there. We fear you will go berserk and hurt us.
