A War Between 2 World Views [David Warren on Liberal Media, Palin, mutually incomprehensible views]
davidwarrenonline.com ^ | July 15, 2009 | David Warren

Posted on 07/17/2009 5:41:45 AM PDT by Tolik

Sarah Palin celebrated Bastille Day Tuesday with an op-ed against "cap and trade" in the Washington Post. Bless the editors of that newspaper for permitting it. Predictably, even Pavlovianly liberal, as they may be on almost any issue, there is a little streak of "wicked" mischief in them that makes their paper worth reading occasionally. Their op-ed policy is to run real conservatives from time to time -- including Charles Krauthammer, currently the doyen of "no we can't" opposition to the whole agenda of Barack Obama and the Nancy Pelosi Congress.

Whereas, other liberal newspapers -- the New York Times comes to mind -- feel comfortable only when fitting disguised liberals into their tiny "token conservative" copy holes. They instinctively limit the field to those Republicans who want to "engage with" the liberal agenda -- to "sophisticated" pundits, such as David Brooks, who memorably retracted the views he had presented in one column, after his contacts at the White House called him to suggest he was too far out of line.

I think it is worth considering here the "evolution" of North American media into what is now a liberal monolith -- except Rupert Murdoch's holdings, and what bleats on talk radio and the Internet.

This is a slightly deeper history than is generally supposed, with some non-political causes. These were economic developments as big as the growth of two-income families, and as subtle as the traffic jams that started to prevent efficient daytime distribution of newspapers. Their aggregate effect was to put America's afternoon dailies progressively out of business, from the 1950s forward.

Morning papers circulated chiefly in the city cores, among a readership more liberal, and tended to be Democrat. Evening papers circulated more beyond the city, among a readership more conservative, and tended to be Republican. But from any given city, there were two distinct party points of view, and better-informed people read both newspapers. (In Canada, same thing, but Liberal and Conservative parties; in this very town, the examples were the Ottawa Citizen and the Ottawa Journal.)

The loss of those evening papers, and their replacement with network TV news, and other national media such as newsmagazines -- guided ultimately by the attitudes of editors and directors in New York City -- helps to explain what happened. The media ground on which American political discussion rests, shifted, largely eliminating public expression of conservative views.

The outrage expressed, today, at the very existence of Sarah Palin, not only by progressive Democrats but by urbane "establishment" Republicans, is in many ways the product of this shift. Increasingly, I find, people on the left simply cannot accept any right-wing view as legitimate. The mere fact it can be so labeled puts it beyond the pale.

We often read that the old categories of "left" and "right" have become irrelevant. It is an argument almost invariably propounded by the left. They have been freed, for more than a generation, from anything resembling serious public debate, and have thus got in the habit of proceeding with an infinitely extendible agenda (through the courts if there are legislative delays). The right has meanwhile got in the habit of feeling disenfranchised.

The right is still there, however: mostly invisible to media editors, beyond their goldfish world. (The immense success of Fox News came from recognizing this "niche market," consisting of about half the population.)

We have one group that lives under the highly artificial and intensely regulated conditions of post-modern urban life. (Even if they go to a cottage, it will be equipped with the electronic paraphernalia to create a bubble of urbanity.) And, we have another group who remain in contact with the eternal verities of life on this planet. (Who, for instance, associate electric power with doing work, as opposed to "making consumer choices.")

Perhaps better terms for the two sides, to replace left and right, might be "martians" and "earthlings."

It is to the earthlings in this scenario that Ms. Palin is speaking. And when she writes lines like this intentional jaw-dropper in the Washington Post -- "We are ripe for economic growth and energy independence if we responsibly tap the resources that God created right underfoot on American soil" -- she is quite intentionally signaling that she is ready for war.

That only implies an immediate run for the presidency to people who cannot understand her. Instead, she intends to use her celebrity to champion the views of the many earth-based Americans who have been overlooked -- and whom the Republican establishment will continue to patronize, and overlook, at the cost of their own annihilation.

We are going to have a war, next door in the U.S.A. -- a war between two world views that have become very nearly mutually incomprehensible. One might almost say that it was quietly declared on the op-ed of the Washington Post Tuesday.

Nailed It!

This ping list is not author-specific for articles I'd like to share. Some for the perfect moral clarity, some for provocative thoughts; or simply interesting articles I'd hate to miss myself. (I don't have to agree with the author all 100% to feel the need to share an article.)

I will try not to abuse the ping list and not to annoy you too much, but on some days there is more of the good stuff that is worthy of attention.

You are welcome to browse the list of truly exceptional articles I pinged to lately. Updated on June 3, 2009.  on  my page.
You are welcome in or out, just freepmail me (and note which PING list you are talking about).

Besides this one, I keep 2 separate PING lists for my favorite authors Victor Davis Hanson and Orson Scott Card.

The ideological opponents are correctly named, but not correctly identified.

The real ideological battle is between elitists who think they are capable of, and actually have a duty to, substitute their discretion for ours in our everyday lives,

and those of us who know that no human is capable of doing that for others outside of the family unit.

Warren seems to have a clearer understanding of events in the United States than do our domestic media outlets.

Guess you only need a perspective of 80 miles from the border to see the forest for the trees...

Re your tagline. That’s the reason I love Dennis Miller. He expresses my thoughts. I’d too be colder to Palin if she did not irritate all that people so much. It’s delicious how they squirm from the sound of her name.

If only! Canada is to the Left of us and is infatuated with our Dear Leader. David Warren is in a minority. But his voice is very clear indeed.

The MSM has been gradually fueling my esteem for the Governor of Alaska, solely because of their contempt for her.

This is a "troll spotter". Leftist trolls invariably get around to saying "there's no difference" between the parties.

They do have a point. If you continue to see the ideological/political struggle as between asses & pachyderms, you won’t see much difference, because there are elitists in both parties. The donks have a minute minority of non-elitists - and that is the difference.

We have to clear out the elitists in the GOP to make the difference mean something.

The true fight is between elitists and individualists.

It’s not just from the Left. Many here were dissatisfied with GOP to the point of saying the same. IMHO the dissatisfaction is very much warranted, but to say that there is no difference - is hyperbole.
Also, my local talk radio show host Ron Smith (WBAL, Baltimore AM1090) who is a libertarian/paleo-conservative/non-interventionist uses this line all the time.

My personal political theory is that politics consist of 2 parts - one is BS, that permeates the whole body of politics and is practiced by various degrees by everybody with the main goal of getting and maintaining power. (I’d say that The Left is more adept in the “goal justifies the means” play, but they disagree). And the second part consists of philosophical differences between conservatism and Leftism (and other political philosophies - I mentioned just 2 because of the binary nature of American political landscape).

Bring it!

It is happening in my own family. My older brother and I spent the day in the car driving our older brother to the ocean to scatter his ashes. He is a flaming lib, college educated and scorns me and my conservative ideas. We were talking about Oregons high unemployment rate because of the timber being saved for the spotted owl.(#1 natural resource) The commercial salmon fishing off the Oregon coast was shut down last summer (#2 natural resource) Now the grass seed just got shut down due to burning the fields to kill the nemotods and the citizens are breathing smoke and they don't like it(#3 resource and nations capital for grass seed growing).

After all that heartfelt pleas for the lives of loggers, fisherman and now farmers and how it is so devasting to our economy (over 16% unemployment 2nd in the nation)and our families, he said, who gave you conservatives the idea that man has dominion over the animals anyway?

I answered him, GOD ALMIGHTY! This is the war we are in, a spritual one and we better be armed with the Sword of the Sprit, the Word of God!! We buried my truly humble, meek and loved God with all his heart brother. Rest in Peace, brother Steve I miss you.

There was a difference between Communists and Fascists - such a big difference as to make them slaughter one another without remorse.

So? Does that mean they weren’t both our enemy? Why of course not.

Though the GOP (with exceptions, vastly outnumbered) is Socialism Lite, they’re of little help to America because they either can’t see or won’t fight our Marxist-progressive enemy. And if they’re not going to fight the enemy, they’re only use is as a speedbump.

But of course that does more harm than good in this case, as it leads to complacency among free Americans, and we wind up celebrating “fighting retreats” rather than striving for victories. (That, in fact, is exactly what the press encourages us to do by their information manipulation.)

What is needed is a leader to tell us to shut up our cheering celebration, that when the enemy appears to be falling back from the skirmish, it’s probably because his main force has encircled us, that we haven’t won a darn thing!

God bless you for those words. My own daughter is a communist. She has swallowed every ounce of their poison and is haughty and insulting. Being kind to her accomplishes nothing. She insults me and her brother and assumes she is naturally superior.

As long as these debates revolve around theory, we lose. We’ve been losing since Bush one. We were the victims of Reagan’s success. We’ve successfully placed our fingers in the dikes a few times like in 1994, but mostly we’ve been fighting a series political Dunkirk’s. Our own generals have often led us into ambushes.

The only time we win is when conditions are so universally bad that the lost states come back to us. Reagan won them a generation ago, and with no media at all supporting him. People voted based on their empty wallets, terrible crime, Iranian hostages, and loss of stature abroad. They simply ignored the fears shouted every day in the media that Reagan was a beast.

The liberals have now won everything. There are no brakes on their rule. So now they snarl and hunt through our posts and threaten violence against people seeking simply to come out of the political rain. They just passed more hate crimes laws and will soon have a snooty racist on the Supreme Court. Doesn’t matter, they are like dope fiends.

They are spiritually sick, supremely so.

Absolutely. We should ignore these malcontents and continue supporting Sarah.
