U.S. intelligence officials were caught "off-guard" by the Friday terror attacks against two U.S.-based hotels in Jakarta, Indonesia.
A senior U.S. official told ABC News the attacks came as a "surprise."
A second U.S. counter-terrorism official said the CIA and other intelligence agencies had given no indication to the White House of "any threat reporting in the last 18 months" involving the Indonesian al Qaeda affiliate, Jemaah Islamiyah.
"Any suggestion that the CIA has not taken the JI threat seriously in recent years is wrong," said a CIA spokesman. "No one from the CIA has ever said that this terrorist group was completely down and out."
U.S. officials had been confident that the group had been dismantled after almost of all its leaders were killed or captured in a joint operation involving Indonesian, U.S. and Australian personnel.
"They were quiet but they weren't dead," said former White House counter-terrorism official Richard Clarke, an ABC News consultant.

I think the CIA is going to look the other way at lot more often in the months to come in order to fully embarrass Obama for his thuggish naivete.
Too worried about Pelosi or watching right wing, gun toting, religious vets in our country.
HUSSEIN Obama did not warn the CIA his islamist friends would strike. What a world we live in.
AQ has totally gone off the Internet and ceased using phones of all kinds. They are using couriers with messages for face-to-face info sharing. It may take longer, but the USA is now totally in the dark.
The only way the CIA will get information from AQ now is through infiltration of AQ at their top level.
We can’t really expect them to stop every single bombing on the planet. I mean yeah they’re American owned hotels but they’re in Indonesia, it’s not that hard to plan a bombing on the other side of the planet without making any noise on this side.
Can the CIA still operate in Indonesia with Panetta in charge or has he defanged them?
I would have guessed the cia was surprised.. otherwise they would have stopped it...
Well, the CIA has been sort of busy defending themselves against attacks by BO, Pelosi and the ObamaComs. Right now, they are more or less in a defensive mode.

In the CIA's defense, they didn't identify the attackers as Lutheran extremists until the last second.
They're relentless and won't stop until everyone is converted and eating lutefisk 3x a day.

I guess Leon “The Nose” Panetta has his “best people” trying to determine where Dick Cheney’s secret location is rather than hunting down terrorists.
Or by watching Al Jazeera...
Panetta has too many apparatchiks at CIA off on political chores, rummaging through the “chatter” for what Obama’s domestic political enemies are saying instead of what the terrorists are saying.

Eating lutefisk once a year for Christmas is more than I can handle, but...if threatened by these girls,I can always try harder.
We are less safe under Obama. Simple as that.
Hey, stopping it would have required pre-emptive action (we can’t have that), so we just wait then call in the police. I bet the FBI is already sending over support teams!!!!
