Blue Dog: 'No way' House bill could pass
By PATRICK O'CONNOR | 7/16/09 2:46 PM EDT
Arkansas Rep. Mike Ross, a key negotiator on health care for moderate Blue Dog Democrats, has warned that "there's no way they can pass the current bill on the House floor. Not even close."
Ross doesn't believe the bill unveiled Tuesday comes close to curtailing the ever-escalating costs of health care spending, particularly for Medicare.
The conservative Arkansas Democrat also objects to the surtaxes included in the bill, saying, "I don't like the idea of raising taxes in the worst economic crisis since World War II."
Democratic detractors are still conferring about what amendments to offer during committee consideration. And the Blue Dogs aren't alone other caucuses and individual members have raised a multitude of complaints with the legislation.
In the face of all those complaints, Democratic leaders and the chairmen drafting the bill could face significant resistance in trying to meet their timeline to approve their version by the time members leave for the August recess.
"I suspect we'll have all the time we need, given they don't have the votes to get it out of committee," Ross said.
But then there is always 3:00AM in the morning when things can happen!
The pot is steaming....
As much as I’d like to be optimistic, I am simply doubtful this is true.
Way I figure, what with the Messiah all out and about and commanding, COMMANDING I tell you, that congress pass this thing and let’s not forget his prime time next week where he will be scaring us that Medicare will go under if this don’t pass...well I think this is all acting and when it passes through the House the messiah will look all the better for having fought such huge odds.
As an aside, even Juan Williams last night said this ain’t gonna fly.
I’m skeptical yon ladies and gems.
And of course we are supposed to believe this democrat. Uh huh. By all means, let’s quit calling, faxing, emailing our house members and senators. Why, the bill is as good as dead anyhow, right! REMEMBER—the next democrat to tell the truth will be the first.
Since the Rats were screaming about "...the worst economy since Hervert Hoover" for the four years leading up to the last election, the economy must have improved greatly since last November.
Who knew?

He’s done something, somewhere that Zer0’s gestapo will use against him. Barring that, they’ll outright kidnap his family or kill one to make the point.
In any case, ANY bill that passes is going to be an obomonation, as leftists don't care how long it takes to destroy the United States of America... it can be a short term goal (passing now and as-is crap/tax, health care, tarp, gut military), or a long term goal (pass only portions for now of these bills, or giving up a few morsels to bluedogs, rinos).
Exactly right. I won’t believe it is dead until it is pushing up daisies for real. Plus they may well pass some other version nearly as awful as this.
It will pass. These thugs in the White House will dig up dirt and make very specific and painful threats to each waffling member. If they need to protect one of their own in a toss-up district, they’ll flip a gutless a Republican to give him cover.
But, it will pass. These guys in the White House, they play for keeps. It’s the Chicago Way.

PLEASE!! THIS IS TO LULL US!!! FIGHT LIKE YOU NEVER FOUGHT BEFORE!!!
I'm with you, Fishtalk. After they finish buying votes from the Blue Dogs for their pet projects (and they have them just like the rest of them,) then they will do some serious arm twisting, as in "we won't primary you, cut off your re-election $, etc." Failing that, the Chicago thugs will go to work on the hold-outs on both sides of the aisle with threats, not promises. There is no way that the Democrats who have been trying to pass this disaster for 60+ yrs. are going to back off when it is well within their grasp.
Elections have consequences, and this past one with the dirty work of both "parties" has consequences that this country will never recover from IMO.
I share your skepticism, but Phil Gramm was a conservative Democrat in the House once, too, as were several "switchers" from those halcyon days of 1994. I'm skeptical, but hopeful. The polls show people today are even more strongly opposed to the kinds of reform that they opposed back in 1993 - especially people who live in the districts that elect "Blue Dog" Democrats. And right now, we can't do anything without these guys on board...
Contact the bastards anyway.
‘Leftists don’t care how long it takes’ — kind of like the Taliban. First hit didn’t destroy the WTC, so they had to go back and do it right. Didn’t care how long it took ....
I agree that 0bama is now too far invested in seeing this thing pass, with that “don’t bet against us”, “make no mistake” speech to have it fail. Cornered animal, if you will. Dangerous.
What pi****s me off is that no one seems to be saying what really needs to be said. I don’t want Nationalized Health care in any form, not just “the current form”. Nationalized Health care is unconstitutional, the government has no authority to pass such a bill. The people don’t want it and no matter what “form” the bill morphs into, it will cost the taxpayers of this country huge amounts of money and the cost actually will be far greater than money. It will be the loss of the finest health care in the world and it will also cost us more freedom. With every bill this traitor legislature passes under the pretender, Bozo the WH clown, more of our freedoms melt away. A real legislature, one with the country as their main concern, would already have started Impeachment proceedings against this would be tyrant.
Too many times I’ve gotten my hopes up, only to find out the fix was in. I’ll believe it when I see it.
