If we could get millions of Americans to march on Washington, what would we do?

They will not risk violence - as long as we are being Civilly Disobedient - Non Violent - there is nothing much to be done...

Ever hear of the Bonus March. They set the Army, under MacArthur, Patton and Eisenhower, to put that down. Which they did, with horses, sabers, and tanks. The bonus marchers weren't even blocking traffic, IIRC.

Or paving the roads, with asphalt, in the summer, in Texas...

Oh, that's so mean! :-P I like it.

that wasn’t public and there weren’t a million of ‘em

Live on national TV isn't public? I live in Texas, now as then, but I saw the events of April 19th on TV from a hotel room in suburban Boston, not 20 miles from Lexington and Concord. Patriot Day events were then ongoing even as Mt. Carmel burned.

“Instead we need to be recruiting angry citizens to run for Congress and Senate against the incumbants in 2010. We need to throw massive amounts of money and time into ensuring that patriots replace all of the politicians who support Obama’s unconstitutional policies.”
______________

More then 440 comments and finally someone comes up with the best idea.

Grassroots conservative participation in the local elections built organizations that grew to elect state and federal candidates. It takes patience and is not as glamorous and entertaining as bantering about a revolt, but it is truly the effective and Constituional way.

Hell...They’ll be fired...anybody fired can’t draw unemployment.

Besides..there won’t be anybody to write ‘em a check.

States won’t write ‘em one. Hell, I wouldn’t hire a politician what can they do...steal? That’s all they know.

Sigh. I guess it’s time. I don’t know if I changed or Free Republic changed, although I suspect the latter. Either way, I’m not on board for any of this. I don’t want any part of rebellion, even speculatively.

This country was started with a rebellion against "duely constituted authority". Thomas Jefferson expected a little rebellion now and again, to keep the politicians "honest" as it were.

The man wrote the Declaration of Independence, Jefferson also wrote:

God forbid we should ever be twenty years without such a rebellion. The people cannot be all, and always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented, in proportion to the importance of the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions, it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty.
...
And what country can preserve its liberties, if it's rulers are not warned from time to time, that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to the facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure."

because the founders knew this was bound to happen and that "peaceful means" would be futile ?

Sure, but they also spoke of what we would call "deterance". That is that the existance of an armed populace would deter the worst abuses. Looks like the may have been wrong. We've got upwards of 80 million armed Americans, guns are flying off the shelves, people are stocking up on massive amounts of ammunition, and still the clueless continue the march to Tyranny.

Of course the British didn't pay attention to all those Rubes in the Hinterland either. Boy were they wrong.

Wow, Jim. Reading this is like eating fresh honey: slow, and most easy on the palette. You convey a convincing sense of motion, of inertia, of getting the proverbial ball rolling.

Yes, I wish to contribute my meager gifts using any effectual means at my disposal. Big picture: "Save America" Strategy: "baby steps", pragmatic measures.

"Secession" if a pipe-dream. Some States are talking about it, but that's all they do is talk. It simply won't happen.

However, if you want rallies/demonstrations/protests to have ANY publicity and impact, then be prepared to spend a night in jail.

Constitutional civil disobedience is an end to a new beginning.

if we could get millions of Americans to march on Washington, what would we do? Millions would be great- but a million will do nicely ...

I suggest that the vast million or so march quietly on Washington--The sound of a million boots on the pavement. The marchers then silently hold a "Sit In"... And after a specified period of time. Silently move out, again the boots marching in unison along the pavement.

The message being: Next Time it will not be a silent march...

It is a rallying point, a "movement" if you will, to give voice to the angry peasants (us) who remember America. And not a whit too soon. I hope some of us will contribute.

To all:

Just complaining about how bad things are and reminiscing on the "good ole days" isn't going to effect change. Jim, as the founder of FR and in a unique position to do so, has kicked the snowball ball rolling here, and it's up to us to build upon it. Remember the pen is mightier than the sword, and now is the time to put all of our gifts - in law, in economics, in American history, in prosaic art, in vision to the future - to real, effective use. You want to make a DIFFERENCE, this is a real chance to do so: by using your talents to help forge the VISION.

Remember, if you will, the inspiration of the Contract with America many years ago. This is like that, and it comes at a time when conservatives, seeking a PERSON, really need a VISION or IDEA around which to rally. The PERSON will come in due time.

Everybody on board?

"Put forth in a way that makes it real and stirs emotions."

Yes, bring it home to Joe-Soccor-Mom so they can understand what they are losing in their little self-absorbed world. Make it very plain and easily understood what they are losing almost weekly because they voted for some "cool" guy. Let them know in the plainest of terms how the erosion of Constitutional rights will eventually affect them.

The toughest pill is this: Federal Pensions. Many who have served in the Military and who have worked in intelligence and other national defense positions have worked at Federal Jobs which "provide for the common Defense", a Constitutionally mandated duty of the Federal Government. Some of these people could have made more in the private sector, some were prevented from going there by the government. I think the litmus test for Federal Pensions should be one of whether the job entailed duties which are Constitutionally the province of the Federal Government.

I am not including the exhorbitant pensions of the Congress, nor the lifelong benefits package they have voted themselves, either.

We don’t have The Iranian Spirit to march against our rulers.

I am so old I recall it used to be called the American Spirit.

Or the Spirit of 1776.

Heck, I remember the saying, “safe as a baby in its mothers womb too!”

Well, I digress, anyone know who won Dancing with the Stars this week ?

“The political establishment MUST fear the people.”

How right you are concerning this.

“A people unwilling to use extreme violent force to preserve or obtain liberty deserves the tyrants that rule them.”

It isn’t the use of this force, but the willingness to use it that strikes fear in the tyrants heart.

A few more for the wish list...

If it hasn’t been mentioned yet, stop funding of the U.N. Rescind “diplomatic immunity.” All people legally in the United States should be subject to our laws. No exceptions. Just as we are subject to theirs.

Also, cease foreign aid “loan guarantees” and cash assistance. We should not be “bribing” other countries to behave with taxpayer money, nor guaranteeing loans that they may take out against the United States’ “full faith and credit.”

The example we set in the world should be enough for other countries to want to follow our lead. If they require cash/loan guarantees to do so, they’re really not our allies.

“No we’re not going to go armed. That’d be nutz.”

I worry having that many unarmed Patriots in one place might be too tempting for Obama to resist. We might be used as an example to the rest of the nation.

I can hear it now, “Let me make this VERY clear, go against the authority invested in me and....”

Why shouldn’t they have the opportunity? Many of these folks want to fight for freedom but don’t see that as likely if they join their home armies. Others want to earn citizenship, and I can’t think of a better way of doing it.

Should Von Steuben and Pulaski have stayed home?
