Barack Obama and the Courtesy of a Knock
cqpolitics.com ^ | 7/29/2009 | Bill Pascoe

Last week, I recalled the story of the homeowner who used a hand gun to defend his children against an intruder, and who was "rewarded" for his courage by being fined by his village for illegally possessing that .38 caliber Smith & Wesson pistol.

But I didn't write the other half of the story -- because I didn't have the requisite citation in hand.

--

Not surprisingly, the Illinois General Assembly followed the lead of many other states in the late 1990s and took up legislation to authorize so-called "No Knock Warrants" in special circumstances -- where the cop had a reasonable fear that he or others could be shot if he served the warrant by knocking on the door, or where there was reason to believe that if notice were given, there would be a "danger" that evidence could be destroyed.

On May 16, 1997, HB 172 passed by a vote of 43-9, with three voting "present." (See Attached PDF)

Freshman state Sen. Barack Obama was one of the nine who voted against it.

Now, combine that with the Hale DeMar vote -- a vote that left DeMar and other Illinois homeowners subject to prosecution if they used a hand gun to defend themselves in their own homes -- and you get this:

In Barack Obama's world, suspected criminals should be afforded the courtesy of a knock on the door by policemen serving a warrant, even if there is reason to believe it puts the policemen at risk, while innocent homeowners should be denied the right to protect themselves with a hand gun against criminals who don't afford them the courtesy of a knock.

This, I submit, is a weird way of looking at the world.

Perhaps Obama could, over a beer, explain his thinking to Sgt. Crowley?

With 0bama, a “courtesy flush” is required.

The world has certainly changed.

My dad was a prison guard for decades.

We had our share of enraged ex-cons casing the house over the years and dad never once hesitated.

He’d walk out on the porch with his pride and joy [a “Dirty Harry” .44 magnum] and beg them to step into the driveway.

Naturally, none of them ever did.

At the age of 10, my dad taught me to shoot and basically put me in charge of protecting my mom.
[”guns are dangerous”, etc etc etc]

One night after dad left for work, some raving maniac began hammering on the front door, screaming about paybacks.

I went to the gun cabinet and got the .22 Ruger Blackhawk and pointed it at his face, which I could just barely see through the front door window.

Boy, did his eyes ever get big.....and then he took off running.

Still sobbing hysterically, mom called dad and he came home.

Heck if I know why...the kook’d already left and I was determined to sit up all night in my Snoopy jammies, with the .22, my Poodle Fifi [seriously] standing guard, waiting for him to come back.

I had it covered...:))

[I suspect I did not have the “average” childhood]...LOL

The choice is clear: Gun control as forced by the Chuck Schumer’s of the world is complicit in every violent crime committed. Conversely, gun control a la Ted Nugent is putting the second shot through the same hole as the first shot, where innocent lives are saved and recidivistic maggots come to a screeching halt, felled by the lovely ballet of good over evil we call the Double Tap Center Mass Boogie. Learn it, know it, love it, shoot it. Good guys should live, bad guys not so much.

I prefer the ‘Ted Nugent’ type control, but sad to say, haven’t practiced enough to be that good – but I’m working on it!

Reminds me of the old suggestion that when passing by a college dorm or a frat house, you yell "five-oh, five-oh" and listen to all the toilets start flushing!

You are the kind of person, and had the kind of upbringing, that made America and Americans great. People with freedom and liberty who can defend themselves and take care of their families.

Sorry guys, I think a knock is in order, except under the most extreme circumstances. A lot of home invasions have occurred with the perps busting in no-knock SWAT style while shouting “Police” to suppress resistance.

I could even imagine an automated “knocker” which would remove the danger of a through-the-door shooting could be used in many circumstances. It wouldn’t be too hard to design.

I would definitely agree with you on that – we can’t base public policy on the lowest denominator.

And that won’t be a bad idea to have a remote controlled ‘knocker’ - if they can go through the trouble of bring out a group bedecked in their SWAT regalia, why can’t they bring a small robot to knock on the door first?

Agreed! The idea that a suspect may flush a baggie means that the cops didn't have a whole lot on him to begin with.

It seems that pre dawn raids with overwhelming force are more the norm now that the exception. Those tactics really do belong more in an urban combat zone or third world thug-ocracy.

Yeah, maybe some of the inner cities qualify....but....

I tend to agree. I usually have a firearm at my side, so if someone (anyone) kicks in the door, if I do not recognize them as family, they are getting shot, EVEN IF THEY HAVE A UNIFORM ON, as there have been numerous examples of thugs dressing up as policemen.

Even a stopped clock is right twice a day.

No knock raids are only appropriate in hostage situations.
Period.

They expose the public and the officers to too much danger in a mistaken situation.
