Military wants to establish regional teams to help civilian authorities respond Proposal awaiting final approval from Defense Secretary Robert Gates Military could provide support such as air transport, large-scale testing

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The U.S. military wants to establish regional teams of military personnel to assist civilian authorities in the event of a significant outbreak of the H1N1 virus this fall, according to Defense Department officials.

The proposal is awaiting final approval from Defense Secretary Robert Gates.

The officials would not be identified because the proposal from U.S. Northern Command's Gen. Victor Renuart has not been approved by the secretary.

The plan calls for military task forces to work in conjunction with the Federal Emergency Management Agency. There is no final decision on how the military effort would be manned, but one source said it would likely include personnel from all branches of the military

We are aware of it and we do need to be prepared, but we do not need to bring in the military. Common sense will be all we need. Wash your hands, stay out of crowded places especially hospitals and clinics. Set some extra food back and keep yourself healthy.

This plan to bring in the military wreaks of government control and possible confinement. They will need tanks to extricate Mrs. panax and I from our rural isolated home. We are very self-sufficent and do not need to go to town more than once every three months. If the quarantine goes past that then we’ll deal with it then.

Fortunately the military is still made up generally of patriots, not Hussein brownshirts.

Remember the changes they tried to make after Katrina:

John Warner National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2007 (H.R. 5122), which was signed into law on Oct 17, 2006, fortunately it was later repealed, returning to original law concerning posse comitatus. But here’s what passed at one point, under Bush.

Section 1076 is titled “Use of the Armed Forces in major public emergencies”. It provided that:

The President may employ the armed forces... to... restore public order and enforce the laws of the United States when, as a result of a natural disaster, epidemic, or other serious public health emergency, terrorist attack or incident, or other condition... the President determines that... domestic violence has occurred to such an extent that the constituted authorities of the State or possession are incapable of maintaining public order... or [to] suppress, in a State, any insurrection, domestic violence, unlawful combination, or conspiracy if such... a condition... so hinders the execution of the laws... that any part or class of its people is deprived of a right, privilege, immunity, or protection named in the Constitution and secured by law... or opposes or obstructs the execution of the laws of the United States or impedes the course of justice under those laws.

I’ve read that 65000 people die from the flu every year.

It’s more like 36,000 and it’s almost all old and infirm people. This flu attaacks healthy young people and spreads to the lungs very quickly. Also...in a normal year nobody dies of the flu in the summer.

We haven’t heard squat about the swine flu in months

We've had 3 swine deaths this summer in VA. and just now there's been an outbreak at a summer camp infecting 12 young boys.

I don't support anything that obama is proposing but this flu is no joke.

>>I don’t support anything that obama is proposing but this flu is no joke<<

And how many deaths among those young health boys?
It’s a flu. It happens. We don’t need the military involved.

‘this flu is no joke.’

The flu is never a joke, but let’s treat it for what it is - a flu - which has been less severe than others. The only thing severe about this flu is the the hype about it. I’m sure it’s transmitting to alot of people - but, I have not met anyone who has had it. I’ve read about people getting it though. Do you know anyone diagnosed with it?

...I shudder to think I might stand at attention looking at Michelle Obama, and be forced to work in their garden, or mow the lawn of Our House...

This is like a bad Sci-Fi movie. I agree with you. The alarm in unwarranted at this point and it just appears like a possible suppression of Constitutional and of Civil Rights right now. What is wrong with local law enforcement in case of a few incidents?
