The Tulsa World reports that the wording of the proposed constitutional amendment has been changed since King's letter to Edmondson and that as a consequence of the change the Department of Justice no longer considers it to violate the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Oh good. I feel much better now. </sarc>

This couldn't have anything to do with the fact that all counties in OK voted Republican in the last election, would it?

Nah, couldn't have anything to do with it, at least not any more than it had to do with the decision which GM dealerships would be closed.

According to polling produced by Newt Gingrich, Americans favor making English the official language by a massive majority, something approaching 90% if I recall correctly. This is a godsend to the Republican party by a ham-fisted Department of Justice.

Newt Gingrich knows how to run with the issue,in fact he has already advocated doing so, let's see if Michael Steele can make anything of it. I ask again as I have asked countless times in these threads, who should be the chairman of the Republican National Committee?

Obama DOJ Threatened Oklahoma Over English-Only Vote

The common sense approach to the de facto language of both Oklahoma and the United States of America is the language of the laws. What possible reason is there for any other position?

This position does not mandate that one must be able to read the language. However, persons who decide to not learn the language is not a reason for the law to accommodate them.

Sounds like more of the La Raza-Hispanic Ku Klux Klan nonsense....forcing a government to accomodate people who refuse to speak English....

Oklahoma should shut down all the Fed facilities in the state...if the Feds deny Fed funding.

"This would mean that such people, LEPs, have not only a federal right not to learn English but a right to have government services provided to them in languages other than English."

Perhaps, and I only say "perhaps," this is correct if and only if the language these LEPs speak was spoken in this land more than 600 years ago...

I think it is a civil right to speak whatever language you want. However, that doesn't mean governmental agencies, schools, and businesses have to cater to you.

Like freedom of speech. It doesn't guarantee anyone will listen.

I don’t live there anymore, but no Empty Suit is gonna threaten with impunity, the state where I lived the first 22 years of my life. Most of the rest of my family will see to that.

It is even more distressing that the administration, legally speaking, may be right.

IIRC, Scotus has found to be "constitutional" these federal power plays, despite the fact there is no constitutional basis for federal extortion of the states.

It really is way beyond time for the states to stand up to the feds. Some dirtbag in DOJ threatening the people of OK to not pass a constitutional amendment is over the top.

I really hear you on that

How many times do we have to keep putting up with DC and the north east telling the rest of us that we should accept certain things.

I’d rather have the 12-year-old down the street who was going door-to-door asking to wash cars so he could make money to buy a Wii, than Steele.

Question is, can Oklahoma do without the Federal Funds? Note to States: If you don't want the Federal Government breathing down your neck budget so you can live without the cancer.

Strange, a Friday a fed court said that CA could administer school test in English only beating down a lawsuit by idiots who wanted all school tests to be in several different languages. I guess the DOJ hasn’t heard about that yet.

This couldn't have anything to do with the fact that all counties in OK voted Republican in the last election, would it? I guess this falls under the same rule as the commiebama crowd trying to gag the GOP Senatorial candidate in Arizona by threatening the Governor with bailout funds. They need to tell the DOJ to kiss their collective a$$e$.

And don't forget that the DOJ told Georgia not to enforce their law requiring proof of citizenship for voters.

They dropped charges against the Black Panthers for voter intimidation.

Do you think there might be a pattern here?
