G.I. Joe Director: This is Not a George Bush Movie
Federal Review ^ | 08/03/09

LOS ANGELES--The director of the new movie "G.I. Joe: the Rise of Cobra" thinks President Obama is "a Real American hero," but apparently wants Republicans to stay home.....

When it comes to selling "G.I. Joe" outside the U.S., the message is "this is not a George Bush movie -- it's an Obama world," director Stephen Sommers said. "Right from the writing stage we said to ourselves, this can't be about beefy guys on steroids who all met each other in the Vietnam War, but an elite organization that's made up of the best of the best from around the world."

Sommers, the director of such genre films as "the Mummy Returns" and "Van Helsing," is hoping that the film will appeal to international markets, where action films "often earn 60% or more of their ticket sales [but] rah-rah American sentiment doesn't play well,"....

As a result, overseas advertising is playing up scenes from other countries and downplaying anything that could be seen as American patriotism.

Well they should just do away with the G.I. acronymn altogether...
Just call him...

How ironic a statement. The original Snake-Eyes, Storm Shadow, and Stalker were all part of the same LRRP team in VIETNAM.

I still have to go with my 8 year old.

Why not just tell him the truth. . . that the Director does not want people like you to see the movie because he disagrees with your political views. Tell him that the man who made the movie does not like Daddy and Mommey. Then ask him if he still wants to go see it.

Oh say it ain’t SO! This guy did the “Mummy” movies - I’m HEART-BROKEN! Can’t just ONE director from H’wood be true to an American upbringing and have us as the GOOD GUYS, not the home-grown commies...?

I was convinced I would not take my 7 year old to see it when I saw the preview before the Harry Potter movie. I turned to my wife and whispered “what the hell does that have to do with G.I. Joe? Now I know why it has nothing to do with the G.I. Joe promoted to us kids in the 1960’s.

Not only should Republicans stay home - but every baby-boomer male who grew up with these toys, who should see this an insult.

I was considering it for this weekend. Now, I’m not.

Same here. I'll get the DVD from my local library whenever.

Sad to hear this. I won’t be taking my kids to an Obama World movie. I’ll encourage my conservative friends to stay home.

“it’s an Obama world” = all I needed to know = shelved for when it hits mainstream TV.

Won’t the actual movie be the same as it was before you read this? Do you think this info will ruin it for your kids too?

I think he wants to have employment in the future and to sell a lot of tickets. I seem to remember two 'George Bush' movies made about fictional Presidents during the Clinton administration. Air Force Onehttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118571/ and Independence Day http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116629/ both feature Presidents who were former military pilots, and who took the fight directly to the enemy.
Movies about those who make long speeches without any meaning and generally twiddle, piddle and resolve generally don't attract many viewers.

Yep, I just scratched this one off my list too. You don’t want my money, fine. Thanks for letting me know. I wish more directors would do me that favor. For the record, I’ve heard it isn’t that good anyway.

This movie will bomb in the US, but will probably make money overseas. I wasn’t going to see it anyway, so I really don’t care what this douchebag says. In fact I really don’t care what any of the celebritycritters say anymore. They are, for the most part, dumber than a bag of hammers. More stupid than a box of rocks. They have the intellectual capacity of pocket lint. Because of that, I’m indifferent.

Hopefully this means that the director just assured that this movie will be a flop in the U.S.

This situation reminds of "Superman Returns", where liberal directory Bryan Singer changed a key phrase so as to not "alienate" international audiences: "Truth, Justice, and the American Way all that stuff."

It was on the basis of the bastardization of that phrase that I did not go see the movie, along with the Lois Lane as a single mother. When a neighbor loaned it to me to watch, what a waste of 2 hours. SR was so boring on so many levels.

To Mr. Sommers, thanks for the heads-up. The only movie you got right was "The Mummy". All of your other endeavors have sucked big time. Now that you've come out of the closet, it's apparent to me that my "Republican" consumer dollars are less in value. How nice of you.

Now, I can go spend my movie dollars elsewhere.

When you go, you should make a strong effort to not enjoy it.

Thanks for pointing that out. I'm sure you know who the "Soft Master" and "Hard Master" were as well.

"The Origin of Snake Eyes" was the greatest issue of the Marvel series.

A movie based on an action figure from my childhood didn't interest me much anyway, nor does 97% of what Hollyweird produces.

Besides, this filmmaker is famous for special effects laden movies with weak stories.

I thank the director for his honesty.

Will see what is playing in the other theaters.
