A grieving mother in Britain was fined $173 for spending too long at her son's coffin before it was taken away for cremation.

Terrie Rouse, 32, said her grief turned to shock when officials told her she had taken too long to say goodbye, The Daily Mail reported.

"The vicar had asked if I would like to spend a bit more time saying goodbye," she said. "I sat by the coffin for 10 minutes, telling my son how much we loved him and begging him not to be scared."

Officials at the crematorium, run by a local English council, impose an extra charge if any funeral runs over its 30-minute slot.

They might even fine her if the tears wet the floor. Sad.

Welll..... I'm very sad for her loss, and completely understand why she's upset. But looking at the full story I find myself quite underwhelmed by her plight.

It's not as if this was sudden ... the baby had been dead for three months. A gut-wrenching good-bye, to be sure, especially for the mother. But she is not the only mourner on the block; and there were people whose grief was fresher than hers who were next in line.

That's correct: there was another funeral that needed to be set up after hers..... is there a particular reason why she should assume it's her right to keep the next set of mourners waiting?

This is what happens when you let the government run regular funerals. Imagine their health care plan.

It’s sad and heartless but the headline is misleading. She had paid for a 30 minute funeral and she was charged for the extra time.

The headline gives the impression she had committed a criminal offense.

The vicar asked her if she needed more time to grieve and she accepted. The next funeral wasn't until another fifty minutes. It seems the funeral home alotted an hour between services. My complaint is the headline reads like she committed a criminal act and not a billing mistake.

Trying to get attention by starting an argument? I stated it was sad and heartless.

My only complaint is the misleading headline from the yellow press. Is it so hard for them to get anything right?

It’s a billing mistake by the town council and should be corrected by the vicar who granted permission.

Last Thanks Giving,we lost a beautiful young man at 61 days, to sids.

I remember the funeral was over but the blue heron's gathered and swarmed for 45 minutes over us.

I did not know then those birds are a baby's "agent"........I was just amazed, you can never put a time limit on grief.

With the NHS providing the clients, they have to keep things moving along!

"I sat by the coffin for 10 minutes, telling my son how much we loved him and begging him not to be scared."

When my dog Timber died two summers ago, I took him to the vet to be cremated. Even he left me alone in the exam room longer than that.

At no extra charge.
