Sotomayor gains more Republican supporters in the Senate
Los Angeles Times ^ | August 5, 2009 | James Oliphant

A small cadre of Republicans declared today that they would cross party lines to vote to confirm Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court.

In speeches on the Senate floor during the debate on Sotomayor's nomination, Sens. Mel Martinez (Fla.), Christopher S. Bond (Mo.), and Susan Collins (Maine) dismissed attacks by their fellow Republicans who suggested Sotomayor could not be counted upon to remain impartial on the bench.

"I have concluded that she understands the proper role of the judge and that she is committed to applying the law impartially without bias or favoritism," Collins said this afternoon.

Bond, usually a party stalwart, said he would vote to support Sotomayor because President Obama was entitled to appoint his choice of judges. He said a Republican president similarly had the right to appoint more conservatives to the court. "She has proven herself to be a well-qualified jurist," Bond said. "The country is tired of partisanship of infecting every debate."

Bond's announcement means that at least seven Republican will vote to confirm Sotomayor.

Considering Obama reject two great appointments in Roberts and Alito, none of Obama’s appointments should get one GOP vote.

Bond said. “The country is tired of partisanship of infecting every debate.”

So, he is suggesting that we end the two party system? No need to put him on the ballot...EVER AGAIN.

Mr. Kit Bond must not be planning a political future as a Republican US Senator.

Don’t let the establishment save his butt in the next primary election by sneaking in a weak or phony opponent to lose or split votes.

Get a real conservative and run em. Only one so the vote isn’t split.

That trick about a phony or weak candidate is the one the GOP insiders tried here in PA to protect Specter until he officially became a Democrat.

He’s already said it’s his last term so I guess he can show his RINO colors. Thanks for nothing, Kit.

So Obama is entitled to his judges but George Bush isn't? Remember Miguel Estrada!

Sorry about reposting the above in the wrong thread. I meant to post an insult about Martinez’s intellect. It is like the movement I was talking about.

These RINOs are despicable.....SotomaRacist is nothing more than a stooge for La Raza (The Race)....The Hispanic Ku Klux Klan.

Thank God that America-hater Mel Martinez is not running for election (though the GOP does not seem to have a real conservative running to replace him)

Bond....no need to put him on ballot....

He is retiring, so I guess he is telling his supporters to go make love to themselves. How’s that for an exit?
