Good evening, Connie! Good evening, all!

I don't usually make requests -- I usually listen to the other tunes posted, but I'm curious about a song:

On the Friday Morning Blast-Off! this morning on WPLJ-FM 95.5 New York (in case anyone's in the area), they played an updated version John Denver's "Country Roads". I don't know who the group is, but if anyone's heard such a thing, could you let me know.

(I dashed off an email to the station asking about it, but no response yet. Probably won't see one before Monday, if ever.)

Thanks, all!

Greetings to all the Freepers out there this toasty Friday evening. It's time for the Friday Flyby. Keeping with the Grasshopper type aircraft fo the last few posts tonight a look at the Cessna O-2 Skymaster.

In 1966 the US Air Force asked Cessna to build a replacement for the O-1 Birddog using the Cessna 336 Skymaster as a design basis. The 336 Skymaster was an light twin engine aircraft of rather novel design. The engines were mounted on the center line in a push-pull arrangement. The military version had a strengthened airframe with 4 hardpoints on the wings for smoke rockets, flares and light ordnance. Extra windows were added for the observer as well as military radios.

First flight was in January of 1967 with the O2 going into production in March of 1967. Twpo models of the Skymaster were built. The O2-A was the Forward Air Control version, just over 500 O2-As were Built. The O2-B was outfitted with loud speakers and used in the psychological operation role, only 31 B model Skymasters were built.

The novel engine layout in the O-2 simplifies one engine operation as well as helping to provide increased performance as well as two engine safety. With a crew of two, pilot and observer, the O-2 had a top speed of just over 200mph.

After Vietnam the O-2 served until the late 80s in Reserve and National Guard units. The US Navy used 6 O-2s as range control aircraft at NAS Lemoore in the 80s as well. In the mid 1970s the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection picked up 20 of the O2s to be used as control aircraft for their Fire Attack program. They served until the mid 1990s when they were replaced by OV-10 Broncos. Like the O-1 Birddogs the O-2s are popular as warbirds as well. So on with the pics...

The head on pic leads off tonites Flyby.

A restored O-2 takes flight.

I don't think this Skymaster was a FAC in Vietnam

A colorfull O-2 performs for the crowd. The extra windows show up well in this picture.

It's not a Warbird if it ain't got nose art:-)

And we close out tonights Flyby with this picture of an O-2 whose pilot wanted the "fast movers" to make no mistake where he was located!!!

Well that's all folks, keep cool out there and have a great weekend.

Regards alfa6 ;>}
