People who have been out of work for months are lining up for jobs at places they once considered unthinkable: slaughterhouses, sewage plants, prisons.
"I have to just shut my mouth because I can't do anything about it," said Nichole McRoberts of Sedalia, Mo., who pictured more for herself at age 30 than working in a poultry plant, cutting diseased or damaged flesh off chicken carcasses.
Recessions and tight job marketsalways force some people to take less-desirable or lower-paying work than they are used to. But this recession has been the most punishing job destroyer in at least 60 years, slashing a net total of 6.7 million jobs.
All told, 14.5 million people were out of work last month, with a jobless rate of 9.4 percent. The result is that many people have had to seek jobs they would not have considered in the past.
The desperation of the long-term jobless has rippled through the labor force. More skilled and educated workers have filled clerical or restaurant jobs. So unskilled workers such as teenagers or high school graduates who once held most of those positions have displaced those even lower on the economic ladder, such as immigrants, Freedman noted.
The intensified competition has hurt all workers even those who are still employed because it shrinks wages. Employers don't have to pay more to lure workers.
That helps explain why personal income fell 0.1 percent in June, excluding the one-time benefits of the government's stimulus program. Wages have fallen each month since October a total of 5 percent over the past eight months.
Indeed, many people who have had to downshift to unsavory jobs have found they're now earning less, too.

We sure haven't heard the Democrat mantra of Americans not wanting to do the jobs that the illegal immigrants will do.
So I guess at this point by not getting rid of the illegals the Democrats are taking away the few jobs that are left FROM Americans!
For the real unemployment rate:

One thing this does is disprove the old adage that there are “jobs Americans won’t do.”
Apples. The kine you eat. You can buy them for a quarter or steal them and sell them to sympathetic passersby. It will help Obama reduce the unemployment rate. Of course he will tax your profits so watch out for the 6 million new ACORN ee’s at the IRS.
Almost but the things you need for survival are not included in the index. Like gas..food. etc.
Be sure to get a good street corner too. Remember, location, location, location.
Hopefully they will start a class at community colleges to learn Apple marketing skills.
because they were playing games with the economy in order to hurt Pres. Bush and the republicans.
.
Yep, after going to the unemployment office, the millions of recently unemployed should also go see their Democrat Reps
by not getting rid of the illegals the Democrats are taking away the few jobs that are left FROM Americans!
.
Yep, look for Amnesty bill soon too, Democrats know they will need more than just Acorn fraud to win the 2010 elections
I personally know some engineers who are now cashiering at WalMart. They say even WalMart is laying off now.
It took from 1865 to 1988 for the United States to build the industrial infrastructure that was the envy of the world and the foundation of the largest and most prosperous middle class in history. It took only 20 years for three Presidents — George H.W. Bush, William Jefferson Clinton, and George W. Bush — to pursue the “free” trade and financial deregulation policies that dismantled the manufacturing base and created the economy of debt that is now unwinding. Obama isn’t helping matters but he is a newcomer to the scene and will soon have to take accountability for his contribution to the decline of a once great nation.
“Some of the prisons pay pretty good money.”
Been there, done that. Money was horrible, but it was not minimum wage so at least its better than the corner store.
Mice and rats are great...with the right sauce.
Japan?......Nope.
India?.....nope.
China?......nope.
HUH! The USA has the world largest manufacturing base?? But HOW can that be! Pat Buchanan and the rest of economic isolationists have been telling us for decades that we shipped all the jobs over seas. HOW is it possible they were so utterly WRONG?
That is not the point. If some civil enginer "Peter the Greeter" at WalMart, she's not creating the designs for new buildings or roads for others to build, and still others to use.
It's not efficient and it's not good for the overall economy.
I agree it isn't an efficient use of the employee's skills but if it is the only way someone can pay the bills what choice does he/she have?
Nothing wrong with snake, or for that matter (non urban) rat. Rat's just a squirrel or rabbit with a bad attitude. I think I'd draw the line somewhere this side of cockroaches, although many people seem to like these ugly critters.
The Democrat Majority Congress are responsible for about 6 million job losses since they took over, and they have done nothing to ‘grow the economy’ in the 3 years since winning the Majority in 2006
