The cop couldn’t run down a middle-aged guy schlepping a tv set? Should introduce that cop to the DARE program (Donut Abuse Resistance Education).

BINGO!!!! But the low IQ type cop will never understand, not being able to play with himself during a chase.

BS, I’ve never seen any of those clowns out run a helicopter and no ones life is endangered by some rookie cop.

I've seen it happen.

And most small towns don't have helicopters and in big cities it takes about 15 minutes to scramble the helicopter and if the police aren't chasing the perp for at least 15 minutes, the helicopter is not going to be able to track them. And then if the perp ditches the car and runs into a crowd of people, the cops in the cars will never be able to pick him out, unless they are on the ground in seconds.

And once the helicopter is scrambled, what makes you think that the guy is not going to keep driving recklessly? Just because the guy is running from a helicopter instead of a black and white does not mean he is suddenly going to stop driving like a maniac and start obeying all the traffic laws.

The cops didn't kill anyone here, the guy running from the cops did.

I frankly believe that these chases would be cut short if police had the ability to shoot the bastards if they don't stop within one minute of the time they refuse to pull over. THAT would probably eliminate 99% of these reckless chases.

“There are only about 30 other car manufacturers represented on the highways today.”

I bet most of them have “black boxes” now though. It’d be a “simple” thing for the gov’t to mandate that said black boxes have a transponder pointing out the back to enable a signal to tell it to shut down the engine.

On second thought, forget I said anything. They’ll do it for sure.

It backdoors a high energy magnetic pulse through the ground plane of the car and
How is the poh-leece car left unaffected?

How is such a narrow 'beam' formed such that a field of view only a few degrees wide (maybe 10 at the most) is formed so other vehicles are not affected?

On a side note, how do identify (so I make use of) this 'ground plane' in my car e.g. *reducing* EMI (noise) from the spark plugs firing (ignition noise)?

So far I can identify the engine, the frame, hood, inner fender wells, etc but no 'ground plane' ...

Certainly, the people who decided to run were more responsible for this than the police, BUT the police made an extremely poor decision here. The people who were punished that committed no crime were the kids that died.

Where in the constitution does it say that police can’t shoot a fleeing felon?

Somebody loads a pickup with kids, no seat belts, and cruises around town. Some idiots racing around town smash into them and cause multiple deaths. If this happened without a police chase who would be blamed? In order to place blame a lot of people posting here would be forced to think instead of blaming police.

Narrow beams are focused by the shape of the antenna. There are other alternatives such as a stinger type of probe that is mounted to the crash bar of the cruiser that is ejected into the chassis (ground plane) and attached to the cruiser long enough to pass the pulses and breaks off much like a bee’s stinger one the cruiser brakes away from its target.

Ignition noise reduction is ususllay accomplished by resistence plug wires. Most cars are constructed by unibody panels that are welded together and at certain places in that structure there are, for the lack of a betteer term, jumpers mechanically connected to make sure the entire car has a common point for electrical ground connections. Most things like tail lights do not run a ground wire all the way back to the battery negative terminal but use a connection somewhere close to the unibody structure for that connection.

“There are a LOT of cop haters on Free Republic.”

Not just here but every where I'm used to it. If your going into this business to be liked you'll be highly disappointed. I retired after 30 years total and now I'm in the oil business, now it's a whole new world of hate. Some people just live to hate it's what makes them happy, must be a sad life to live.

Not blaming only the police. Both the perps AND the police were responsible for this. The immediate custody of a criminal is not worth innocent lives, except in very extreme circumstances, and a car chase meets none of these circumstances.
I know that criminals need to be apprehended as soon as possible, but disregard for lives and property isn’t the answer.
Putting your residence or buisness on a don’t respond because you don’t like what the cops did in this instance?
How about putting them on notice that if you are being robbed, it’s ok to just call in an airstrike on your home or buisness?

Every officer who was involved should be charged with murder.

Did you reach that judgment from the facts presented in the article? How long did the pursuit last? How fast were the vehicles going? What if the police turned on the red lights to pull the vehicle over after it ran a stop sign so the vehicle sped up and ran another stop sign and collided with the other car? The whole thing could have taken place in ten seconds without ever exceeding 40 mph. Would you still say the cops were murderers?
